Petty's from Florida, where the Allmans formed (Ma Allman lived there). Don Felder of the Eagles taught him guitar. Stephen Stills was also part of that scene way back in the day. Don chimes in here about the Gainesville scene. https://www.billboard.com/articles/...ty-tribute-friend-student-gainesville-florida Duane: “Very slowly, I was in Muscle Shoals and I went down to Jacksonville and was jamming with Berry and Dicky. Jaimoe came with me from Muscle Shoals, he’s originally from Macon. Greg was in California and Butch was in Jacksonville where we all got together and jammed for a couple of months putting together songs and stuff. After that we went up to New York and recorded there. We never played a gig before we cut our first album.”

Happy Thursday! Two thoughts I’ll share this morning: 1. Last night was the first time my girlfriend and I got to pass out candy. First time home owners as of January and we lived in apartments until this time the last few years. I have a Save The Crew yard sign that I added a “d” to, but it is really small since there isn’t a lot of space. I had a lot of people comment on it, some adults with their kids saying “you need to put a d on that sign”, to “we saved the crew”. One guy was out trick or treating in a crew jacket, and he saw I had my crew jacket on, and we gave each other a high-five, and talked about the saga while his kid wanted dad to keep going. He said he can’t wait to get a black crew jersey but he’s held off while Precourt was in charge. This is our type of guy. My favorite was the little kids who said stuff like “we need to save the crew” and “they are staying!”. Feels good man. 2. Playoff game tonight. It feels way different than a month+ ago. I don’t know how I would have handled watching potentially our last game ever tonight.
I can't link since I'm on my phone in a hotel but i found a reference to Tom Petty first hearing Duane play at a frat party he snuck into in 1966. The group, with Geegg, was called The Allman Joys. Ew.
Yeah, that early stuff is pretty funny -- very 60s. You can tell the brothers had "it" though. Gregg's autobiography is a really good read. My wife read Galadriel Allman's bio of her Dad (Duane) and that is on my list. Working through Allan Eckert's take on Pontiac's Rebellion currently. (The Conquerors)
Man, we have quite the Tampa connection. Between us and Frankie we're covered. I honestly don't miss most of it -- Florida is America's basement in that it's wet and full of bugs. However, I do miss the diversity. Whenever I'm down there, I hit up La Teresita on Columbus and the last couple of times picked up some Jai Alai from Cigar City. Thinking about it though, when I was down there, I had to stop at "Little Columbus" every so often. It was a little area on Dale Mabry that had an Applebees, Pei Wei, Wendys, Chili's, Chipotle, Moes, Panera, Bonefish, Coldstone, and Firehouse subs all within about 3 blocks of each other.
That sounds like suburban Orlando. They foisted the world of Darden restaurants in every suburban mega-strip mall on the rest of us. It's too bad, because the local food scene in MCO is pretty good.
When I lived in Tampa (around 2008) there were lots of great places sprinkled around but it was heavily dominated by chains. It was frustrating in a lot of ways but it made finding those truly great places fun.
I have a serious questions for those who know the Columbus political landscape: When the Crew build their new stadium, if public funds are used in any way (roads, infrastructure, or all the way up to the stadium itself), does that require a ballot referendum or is it in the council's authority to approve it all? Thank you in advance for your replies.
Initial post is off on the Allman's timeframe. First album was in 1969. Plus they had done some studio stuff as the Allman Joys before that. Some nice tidbits of Allman Joys on the 4CD Dreams box released in the late 80s (or early 90s).
Not as plugged in as some, but I believe there are mechanisms council can use to get this done without a public vote, within limits. I believe there are funds set aside/earmarked for building entertainment districts (I forget the precise nomenclature) that could be used. What the $$ limit is I do not know. Been discussed upthread somewhere. Or in the massive one.
Depends on how they utilize public funds and where those funds come from. The city, county, and state have grants, programs, and other resources which have millions of dollars in them that could be directed without a vote. True infrastructure (roads, pipes, electrical, etc) could easily fall into that category and come from one of those sources. Previously we have talked about some grants for economic development dedicated to infrastructure for the state have over 180m in assets allocated and an annual budget of 20m. That grant wouldn't require any sort of vote and could simply be applied to the project without issue. If they wanted to issue bonds to actually pay for part of the construction of the stadium itself, then that might require a vote. It would depend on how they were underwriting and collateralizing the bonds. In either case, I am actually pretty confident a vote would pass. Not only because of support for the Crew and a new stadium but because it would be directly tied to continued economic development in downtown. The new stadium would mean more events like Rock on the Range and greater ties between the Arena District and areas like Franklinton which are rapidly developing.
Thank you for the information. In the previous massive thread, these kind of things were touched on, but almost as a "What if?" I realize this is only marginally better informed, but now that the Crew are saved and serious work is being done to finalize a new stadium, I was wondering what obstacles might get in the way politically.
I agree with this especially with the bad taste leftover from the Nationwide Arena deal. But the positive is there's a very active/vocal group of supporters in STC to help get the word out on any potential Yes votes.
I thought I had heard that one method they could utilize is for the city to sell off bonds and use that money for the stadium, so while it would technically be "public" funded it would only be through people who opted into buying those as opposed to a tax increase or something along those lines.
Lived in Cincy for a few years and discovered that is Cincinnati for ya. Many people who live there are born and raised and see it as the greatest city on earth. Therefore, their things are also the greatest. A list of staples that I found to be meh at best: Montgomery Inn - Just nothing special. And way too sweet in my eyes. LaRosa's Pizza - Absolute garbage Cincinnati Chili as a whole - Tried multiple places due to friends saying I had to Rhinegeist - 95% of their beers are the exact same base with a different additive Goetta - Probably the best item on this list, but still underwhelming for the reviews
LaRosa's opened a Dublin location within the last year or so. I was very excited, because I associate LaRosa's with trips to Kings Island and games at Riverfront Stadium. The pizza was, um, not as good as I made it to be in my nostalgia.
The pizza is crap. I worked at LaRosa's next to UC for a couple of years and it was a blast. Everyone was in college and I don't miss the food but the fringe benefits were fantastic.
