Were they better than vidic and Rio? The best centre-back partnership in the history of the Premier League is ___________________🤔 pic.twitter.com/phXZEcoyxH— Football Tweet ⚽ (@Football__Tweet) October 18, 2018
Nope. They were good but they were at their best in a very defensive setup where they were offered lots of protection by their midfield. Rio and Vidic were in a more attacking setup and were more isolated.
#2 for me behind Rio and Vidic. They were very good obviously and were the epitome (along with his Inter defense anchored by Lucio and Walter Samuel) of how good Mourinho used to be when it came to putting together and coaching a top defense. Rio and Vidic still edge Carvalho and Terry overall: a near perfect CB partnership. Loved Carvalho though because he was not just so intelligent (with an exceptional reading of the game) but he was excellent physically, despite not being the biggest guy around. Especially in the Prem, where some thought he would not be able to handle the rough nature of the league. Lots of big time CB partnerships back then in the Prem though (Hyppia - Carragher, Campbell - Toure): how times have changed.
Terry was great but bit over hyped and its his leadership skills which eclipsed his on field display. For me Rio / Vidic were best but Stam made johnson look way better (when nit injured) only if we could have hang on Stam and paired him with Rio that would have been something as Stam was cornerstone of modern day 'athlete' CB before that we had some proper old school CBs aka Bruce Pallister May.
Rio and Vidic, by some distance over any other CB partnership in EPL history and probably British football history. We had an interesting debate a year or two ago here about who was the greater CB, Rio or Vidic. Most here said Rio. Whoever it was between the two, it could be very persuasively argued that not only was Rio/Vidic the greatest CB partnership in EPL history, but that Rio and and Vidic -- with all due respect to Stam, Bruce, Pallister, Terry and Adams -- were the two best CBs in the history of the EPL.
Exactly. Its not even a debate. Rio/Vidic miles ahead of everyone. Even Bruce/Pallister, Adams/Keown, Stam/Johnsen were better.
I am curious how you would have your Top 10 PL list sorted. CB partnerships are one thing, but I never really stopped to think about comparing Vidic on an individual level to other PL defenders.
Tier 1: Rio, Campbell, Stam, Carvalho, Terry, Kompany Tier 2: Vidic, Gallas, Adams, Carragher, King, Pallister, That's PL era only. Not 100% on top 10 order, but no way is Vidic top 5 PL let alone British football.
I never really got to see Stam, Pallister, or Adams play, but that seems a fair list to me. Might have some Arsenal supporters try and throw Adams in the top tier though. Always loved watching Kompany in his prime. Shame how the injuries have taken his best years.
Adams is a toughie for me. Fantastic leader, but I'm not sure individually he quite at the very top echelon, from a talent perspective. He never really proved himself at the very top outside of England - for me.
[emoji23] I like these guys! They make up funniest stories! Bayern Munich will hold a shock press conference today with speculation that Arsène Wenger could be appointed as their new manager. (Source: Daily Mirror) pic.twitter.com/iH7m0rFYIq— Transfer News Live (@DeadlineDayLive) October 19, 2018
Hoeness is crying to the media again about the disrespect being shown by them towards Bayern. Funny hearing that moron talk about respect when he constantly talks shit about other clubs.
More on Hoeness and Rummenigge conplaining about Bayern's coverage in the media. www.bbc.com/sport/football/45915862 Was going to characterize Hoeness as a bully, but he's really nothing more than a loudmouth, who loves to act and speak tough, in the belief it makes him intimidating. Not sure it does anymore and it's all nothing more than noise...
Yes and rest of the teams will not able to maintain same pace for the whole season.Leaders dortmund have woeful defense. They can afford to be 10 points behind before xmas and win the league by 10 points. Thats how competitive bundesliga is.
Benz denies the kidnapping attempt reports against him. www.bbc.com/sport/football/45912952 As long as no one is found chopped up in pieces and stuffed in boxes, Benzema perhaps deserves a 'break'...
The Terry one is tough for me. I agree he gets over rated. But, hes better than he often gets credit for on this board imo. Truth is somewhere in between both I think. Doesn't help hes been such an unlikable character, villain even.
'Tier one' however it is quantified/qualified appears to be for the creme de la creme. Terry, albeit an excellent and top CB, does not belong there. He's definitely a notch below and would be alongside the likes of Vidic, who personally I rank ahead of him. Just a shame when it comes to King: there's just no telling how high he'd be among the Prem's best CBs if he managed to be fit more than he had.
