I am completely against fundraising for schools. The worst are the charter schools that are fundraising. You're operating a for-profit enterprise and you're expecting kids to raise money for the education that YOU are supposed to provide, but won't because it cuts into your profits?? What a load of crap that is.

In case you didn’t know: most charters aren’t run for profit. The 40% run for profit are garbage and probably 2/3 of the other 60% aren’t appreciably better, but most charters can’t use donations to maintain their profits.

I know of at least one in PA that has their students doing fundraising. I'd report them, but there's very little oversight of charter schools.

Hey, our schools already go August to May instead of March to November, so we're halfway there!

Calisse! I saw Phil Esposito diving his car in bumper to bumper traffic. At first, I thought what kind of mamaluke is such a fanboy that he'd have a license plate of "ESPO-7" but when I was in the next lane, I saw it was really him! He wears glasses and his hair is grey, but he looked pretty much the same as he did when he was playing. Course, that was in the day of good ol-time Eddie Shore hockey, when you knew what they looked like cause they dint need no helmets, eh?

Now here's a creative workaround to get profanity in a license plate!

This was more junior league stuff, as far as I could tell. But the huge occurrence in Memphis versus the almost complete void of here in Milwaukee should tell us all about the relative wealth of the two cities.

Not Schwerner; not back then. And given what they were doing, not much for Goodman either.

Ah yes....Mr Hockey. I was at the Eastern States Coliseum in '62 when his Spfld Indians won the Calder Cup. When they unfurled the huge Victory Banner it proudly proclaimed the Springfield "Idnians" as Champs. We all roared with laughter. Quite a few of those team members went on to play in the NHL.

Ps...For his contributions to the game of hockey, Eddie Shore was awarded the vanity license plate "MR HOCKEY" by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Pps...one of the things I like about BS is that many posts jog my memory

I don't know of anyone selling candy in front of Wawas. That's Girl Scout territory, and they'll bust your kneecaps in if you try to front on their territory.

I knew Eddie Shore's grandson, used to play in an informal pickup game. He wasn't quite as good of a player as his granddad.

Why would Schwerner be treated differently than Goodman, or the reverse? FWIW, both were White and Jewish.

My point is that there isn't necessarily anything to be gained or proven by sending Black children out to risk being shot full of holes by White residents. The ones who don't have the courage to shoot us will not try, and some of those who can shoot straight will do so. It won't make a single conservative rethink his position on whether we're allowed to knock on his door.

    1. Perhaps my memory is faulty, but it is that Schwerner looked very obviously Jewish and Goodman did not. My Uncle Stan is a tall red-haired kid from Hackensack: it was a bit incongruous, the few occasions I saw him in a yamalke. My Uncles Yissikhar, Leo, Moritz, and Avner OTOH were Rumanian born and looked like extras from "Schindler's List." You could pretty much tell without any research.

    2. And the point at which I jumped in, I was responding to a poster that I took for white expressing that canvassing was so inherently scary that people were a bit crazy to do it; and that seemed like a severe shortfall of courage. I'm not exactly a superhero wannabe, and it literally never occurred to me that canvassing was so dangerous I should be scared to do it-- and back in Vietnam days I was threatened with a knife in one incident and a beating by a high school football team in a second while canvassing.

And of course I was not recommending that black kids man up and do it anyway, I was posting at a younger generation of white folks.

Fair enough... I just looked, and maybe it's just me, but neither of those guys fit whatever visual stereotype existed for Jews at the time.

FWIW, most of the Jewish kids I went to school with or met otherwise looked like garden variety White folks, with the exception of one guy who showed up as a ninth grader looking kinda like Frank Serpico, beard and all... which is interesting, given that both Serpico and the guy who played him are of Italian descent and probably Catholic.

I think canvassing while Black is kinda crazy. I also think courage is mustered when necessary; I see no reason to put Black kids' lives at risk for the right to go knock on White folks' doors, nor do I see one for them to join wars for a nation that would not treat them as equals.

Now, I DO think these "people" deserve a visit or twelve from JWs at inopportune times of the morning and night. And some JWs are Black. Let the adults go.

You're probably right. My snarky reference to TaosJohns post was obviously lost on you.

I should just let all of you get back to your collective whatever it is you are on about.

Let me know when you've got it all figured out.

Okay, now I just looked, and the one I always thought was Schwerner was Goodman-- possibly I just assumed that the name and the face went together precisely because I would have expected that face to be taken for Jewish anywhere in America in 1964, and I would have expected the name Schwerner to be so taken as well...

I think we all look alike to you-- quite understandably, and probably if you can teach any children to do the same it will make the world a better place...
