And there in lies the truth to all the problems defensively. Keep replacing players with less expensive ones. Ousted vs Marinovic is a wash as you say. Laba still hasn't been adequately replaced. Parker wanted out but Aja, Henry & Maud are all lesser defenders. Not as bad as the situation with our DM but still noticeable.

But wait: with Teibert and Ghazal unavailable vs SKC, we might indeed see De Jong get his start in a central defensive midfield role.

I am a little lost not having Carl to rip, and having the season pretty much done as far as the playoffs.

i dont buy the Whitecap FO scenario that parker wanted out- even parker has stated that he would have stayed with a better salary deal worthy of his talent at CB

the Caps wanted the $500 000 TAM from the Red Bulls mainly for juarez's salary... and its turned out to be a disaster of a trade- juarez is a HUGE BUST and our defense- near the top in 2017- has become one of the worst in 2018 and it has caused us to probably miss the playoffs IMO

the Red Bulls have a +27 goal difference and the Caps have a -11- (in 2017, the Caps gave up 49 goals and in 2018 have given up 60 with 3 games to go- NYRB have given up 33 for 2018 and 47 in 2017)

the trade was made for MONEY! to buy down DP contracts over the MLS salary cap- NYRB easily won the trade

The Parker decision and the way they spun it were very bad. I'm not sure how much Parker wanted but the MLS union salary report shows under $120k for 2018 so I guess we have to wait for next year to find out what the NYRBs offered. That is up there competing with the Nguyen trade for dumbest move.

To have money for Juarez, Ghazal, Shea, etc, but not keep Parker, Ousted or Laba is just plain wrong on so many levels.

At this moment, I take most of what this FO propagates with a cattle lick-sized block of salt.

thats a good one, much like old fans 'a mouse's fart'

the FO has put their spin on at least 3 ex-players- camillo, ousted and parker- and i dont believe what they say when it comes to resigning quality players to a new contract... and each time the Caps have become a worse team

a team should be run with integrity, accountability and transparency- its time for the Caps owners and FO to follow this creed- its one of the crucial pinions to developing a top team in MLS

Your highlighted wording makes it sound like you are running for a city council or school board seat in next weekend's local elections. If you are, good luck!

The more I think about it, the more I think they'll be blowing this club up and making extensive personnel changes. There'll be many new faces but on similar contracts to the ones currently here who will be jettisoned. It gives a better illusion that you're spending more money when you actually aren't. But, MLS is still a salary cap league and even if bigger spending clubs are able to shell out big bucks for DP calibre guys via the complex financing rules here, lower spending clubs can still be competitive and can go on a big playoff run. That's what this FO is betting on.

And with that, I still say BCLC should be the official shirt sponsor, with a hashtag on the front of the shirt saying #noyourlimitstaywithinit. To me, that sums up this club's ownership and FO to a tee!

    election- NADA!!

hope for 2019- yup- i think the ownership group wants to up its committment to the team- signs of market stagnation and possibly loosing any potential to grow the imprint are upon them

i still say the new head coach will have a recruitng budget in the $6-8 mill usd range (depending on will get a new contract offer such as kamara) which will put them in the $12.5-13.5 mill USD spending in MLS and $3-4 mill USD above the allotted MLS salary budget of about $8.7 mill USD (i believe that MLS is raising its player budget/money pots another $500 000-600 000 to come in about $8.7 mill - this year it was $8.1 mill USD and the Caps spent $8.2 mill USD)

as we all know, how the money is spent will dictate the fortunes for 2019, but it certainly will be better than what we saw under robo whose record of successful signings was abysmal

1 MOVE BY THE CLUB THAT COST US THE SEASON:

    if i had to pinpoint 1 reason why the team missed the playoffs, it would be: the trading of CB, tim parker, to RBNY- the stats speak to that;

    2017- final standings-------- goals ceded= 49; goal dfferential= +1 (10/22 in MLS))

    2018- with 2 games to go-- goals ceded= 64; goal differential= -14 (19/23 in MLS)

the Club says that parker wanted the trade; parker nixes that- he wanted to stay if the Club offered him a reasonable contract

    i believe tim parker

so why did the Club trade parker- so they could use the $500 000 from RBNY for buying down the contracts of players like the ineffective/downright poor efrain juarez which will go down as one of the worst non-MLS signings that coach robinson made (and he made a lot of them!) and the mediocre aly ghazal

Sounded like Parker wanted over $500k/yr to stay in Vancouver. When it wasn’t presented in winter of 2017, he requested a trade. This was before Caps increased Waston’s salary to $600k. I like Parker a lot and believe he was certainly missed but I can see the hesitancy by the Caps to offer that much as it not only was a sizeable increase but could have impacted what Waston wanted.

Parker is still on his original contract with Red Bulls so will be interesting to see what happens with him as it expires end of the year. He had a good year but so did his CB partner Aaron Long who is only making $73k/yr. Arguably, they have been the best CB pairing in MLS this year for less than a total of $200k!

hopefully you are not saying that the Caps made the right decision- after the steven beitashour fisaco in 2015 and the results in 2016, i would have thought the Club would have learned a message- DONT SCREW UP A GOOD DEFENCE BY PENNY-PINCHING- IMO, parker deserved a bigger salary, not much different than waston- PLAIN AND SIMPLE!! the duo were probably the best CB tandem in MLS in 2017- keeping them together should have been a Club priority

If you remember---- my comments in the off-season after parker was traded was that this would be a BIG mistake- prophetic words

USING THE $500k FOR PLAYERS LIKE JUAREZ AND GHAZAL WAS JUST SHEAR STUPIDITY- its not hindsight, its just taking time to do a serious evaluation to see that these 2 players would struggle in MLS- ghazal has been adequate; juarez is an embarrassment- how robinson never saw that before letting parker go just amazes me- if i could see the possibility of a disaster, why couldnt he??? the Caps have one of the worst defences in MLS

and then robo brought in aja and kept maund (and eventually henry) to fill the gap left by parker- none of these 3 were anywhere near the quality of parker... and it cost us 6-8 points- in my estimation- and a playoff spot

its no coincidence that RBNY has the best defence in MLS and could be the MLS Cup winner- defence wins cups- parker is a leader on their defence

tim lucked out by blowing dodge and not being part of a dog and pony show that the Caps have become-

regardless of what robo's friend- kristian jack- says- carl robinson was not a good coach because he couldnt recognize his inability to accurately evaluate non-MLS players- we can all speculate why that was (DB)

i am now hopeful that 2019 will be a turn-around year because of a new coaching staff, a cleaning out of many weak/poor players and a stated bigger $$$$ committment from the ownership group

It was laid out that the “Parker requested a trade’ was a planted story by the caps.

Carl wanted Juarez, he had to plant the business class story about Nosa to free up that spot ; needed to get the TAM to pay down his contracts and that shipped out Parker , and the dominos fell from there. I don’t think we need to keep buying the “Parker wanted a trade”. He didn’t, and it was foolish to let him go

When we look at the money WASTED, two 500k CBS (if that is what Parker would get in 2019) is not such a bad thing. If he was here this season they likely make the playoffs just based on the lower goals allowed.

And I would be completely shocked if Parker’s new deal at NYRB is for 500k, i bet he gets a 350k type of thing. The whole “500k demand” was a planted story as far as I am concerned unless NYRB proves that wrong.

further stuff about the value of tim parker:

    http://www.sportingnews.com/ca/socc...the-toughest-in-mls/pgepkfywnqcg159goj24k80g0

and we ended up with efrain juarez ($525 000)- relegated to nowhere to be seen in Whitecap land- and aly ghazal ($575 000) - a very mediocre DMF- all for $500 000 and a stupid head coach who did the trade and then ended up paying a mediocre MF in felipe ($425 000) and striker anthony blondell ($250 000) who has just 1 goal , money that could have been used to keep parker in Vancouver

and tim is on a team that could win the Supporters Shield and the MLS Cup- whatever money he signed for - AND HELPS LEAD THE BEST DEFENCE IN MLS

    apparently, parker wanted $1.8 mill USD over 3 years= $600 000/season; the Caps offered him $1.4 mill USD over 3 years= $466 000

    https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2018...lipe-trade-between-caps-rbny-done-get-details

was he worth the difference?? just ask the RBNY players and the fans- ABSOLUTELY- and it cost the whitecaps to miss the playoffs

and KJ can kiss my ass for saying that the Whitecap head coach, carl robinson, should not have been fired

Interesting that Red Bulls nominated Parker’s CB partner, Aaron Long, for defensive player of year but not him. Both players are making less than $100k/yr but Tim’s contract is the one that expires at end of year. Maybe a little negotiating ploy by Red Bulls? Negotiations can be brutal in a salary capped league. Will Red Bulls offer Parker what he wants or even what Caps offered? Maybe Parker wants to try his luck overseas. I like Parker a lot but feel like he is pretty much a finished product which might be good enough (possibly) for 2BL. Maybe he was hoping for more USMNT appearances so he could be eligible for a work permit in England. He might be good enough for Championship but that isn’t going to happen.

Also, while Felipe didn’t quite pan out as hoped, Caps got $500k TAM out if deal plus some percentage of sell on. This does not all fall on Carl’s lap. I suspect the FO had plenty to say in the deal. Also, I suspect Tim would be willing to take less to live and play near family than crazy expensive Vancouver.

THIS IS A STUNNER THAT I DIDNT KNOW!!

tim parker is being paid... $116 000 for this year- so the Caps could have kept on his signed contract for around $100K- or even offered him a substantial increase in the $400 000/year level for 2-3 years which i think he is worth- keep him happy

no wonder he was pissed when he saw christian dean's salary, for example, or a bench-warmer like hurtado

i had assumed- obviously wrongly- that he renegotiated his contract north of
    $350 000 for the 2018 season

what will the RBNY do with tim's contract that ends december 31, 2018 is unknown, but they should learn from the Whitecaps- dont screw around with the league's best defense or you will loose a lot more, including $$$$$$$$$$$

the evidence is very clear- when tim plays CB for your team, the defence vastly improves, like the whitecaps did in 2017 and RBNY in 2018- every MLS club should bid for his services for 2019 IMO- he is a difference maker - defence wins titles and cups

simply put, by not signing parker to a new contract at a much higher salary the Caps lost a lot more- the defence has been leaking goals like a sieve and we have no playoff game, which would have paid for his salary BTW

THE WHITECAPS MOTTO- STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES

The club got horrendously poor bang for buck from high priced guys this year, apart from Kamara. The team was still the inconsistent group it has been during almost the entire time of Robbo's tenure. It wasn't a team "on the rise," so to speak, so Robbo and his staff had to go. Time for someone else to man the rudder here. He might be better or he might worse but sticking with Robbo was the answer.

whomever becomes the next head coach, he and his assistants are in a very enviable position

aside from kendall waston, the only other players under contract for 2019 that i would definitely want back are theo bair, sean melvin and russell teibert-- all the others are expendable- Jake Nerwinski, Marcel de Jong, Efrain Juarez, Felipe Martins, Michael Baldisimo, Anthony Blondell, Simon Colyn

the players under an option that i would want re-signed are reyna, mezquida levis and norman jr- the rest are expendable- Jose Aja, Myer Bevan, Roberto Dominguez, Marvin Emnes, Aly Ghazal, Doneil Henry, Erik Hurtado, Stefan Marinovic, Aaron Maund, Sean Melvin, Spencer Richey, Brek Shea

the only player out of contract that i would have back is kei kamara; Sean Franklin, Brian Rowe and Christian Techera are all expendable

the hilighted players salaries come to $2.65 mill USD; of course, he will keep some of the other players.. but not many IMO

what a great opportunity to build largely a new team with lots of extra cash, a great market and a terrific fan base of 22 000

IMO, he has already started the process of deciding which players he wants to keep and who he might be trying to sign from MLS or beyond

i still figure that the team's budget for 2019 will be in the area of $13-14 mill USD (about $8.7 mill USD from MLS and the rest from the davies transfer money)

always look on the bright side of life- 2019 will be better and 2020 even better

That would be ambitious bringing back only 8 players including guys like Norman Jr who looks way out of his depth in Scottish 2nd tier. I know what you are pointing out is a hypothetical, but signing a boat load of players to a MLS contract in Vancouver, with MLS salary and roster restrictions is not an easy thing. That is how you wind up getting involved with big agents like DB who can steer you towards players that are even available and possibly interested in coming to Vancouver. Expect to pay a premium as well except for the desperate.

well Old Fan, a salute to you-- marvin emnes never played 1 minute, just like you predicted when he was signed in september

and juarez and blondell, costing the Club in excess of $2 mill USD, are non-factors and both should be gone by some trickery

and its obvious that techera is gone- only 50 minutes in the last 4 games-and waston is going to be sold or traded

cleaning house is a great start for the 2019 season-- BUT teibert, reyna and kamara must be on the team
