OK. How about a hybrid of a penalty kick and free kick? How about DOGSO outside of the PA lets the victimized team shoot from the spot of the foul with no defenders in between? What does SPA mean? It's not in the Referee Acronyms topic.
Stop Promising Attack, i.e., tactical foul which is cautionable as USB. Should be added to the acronymphomania catalog.
To be fair I've seen SPA used a lot more in the past 6 months or so. Even I generally referred to it as a tactical foul before hopping on the SPA train.
On the other end of the pendulum from the Everton incident, this was an SFP red in France over the weekend: https://streamable.com/gr2cf
Ha, and then this only gets a yellow in UEFA yesterday: https://streamable.com/nzeg2 To be honest, that one seems much, much closer to the Everton call. Fascinating to compare all these.
The France one is a bit harsh, the navy player does kick the white player, however the white player puts his head into the play. The second one I would be OK with a either color but I would be leaning toward Red. The defender saw the attacker coming and elected to do a high kick anyway.
Yes. I think of the three pieces of evidence we have from the past 3 days, the UEFA one is the worst of the lot. He absolutely knows where the opponent is and he still goes high, making contact with studs. I don't just lean red, I think it's supposed to be red. Yet in a UEFA match, with a referee not afraid to give reds (he had two later in this match), it's only a yellow. I know it's only one weekend and three calls, but I do think this shows EPL is a lot more in line with UEFA presently than France/Italy/Germany were and are now.

I had to look twice to find the ball. Geez. Atkinson is very slow with Reds. Has been for a long time.
I’ve been busy yelling at coaches and parents! You know, I must be losing it. The first goal in the match did me in. The second one (the one you are talking about) had no effect on me at all. Really bad miss by a white badge AR. But, those things tend to even out! (Not really, but it made me feel better saying it!).
The one and only thing I can say in defense of Atkinson is that (based on the still photo) he was screened. This view would have been what the AR could have seen, but he was probably more focused on an offside line. It's plays like there where VAR can be a big help. It was definitely a miss, but being screened could have had something to do with it. A good replay would show the shin-high contact with a locked leg and recommend a sendoff (assuming, of course, we are operating under the assumption that you can do something short of breaking a player in two to earn a sendoff ).
First Chelsea goal in the Carabao Cup was checked for offside for about a minute but it seemed almost impossible to tell with the mess of bodies.

And Roger East gets his first PL match of the season and only his 3rd so far this year. He did have 2 fourths last week.
I genuinely have no idea what Stuart Atwell’s line for a SPA caution is. Twice in a 20 minute first half stretch, the same Southhampton defender fouled deliberately to stop an attack. Atwell gave him a talking to both times. If nothing else, it was persistent infringement. Atwell finally gave a caution to a different Southhampton player and then a Wolves player in 90 seconds.
