The Bundesliga season starts next weekend with 12 teams. 27.7 Austria Wien - FC Wacker Innsbruck 28.7 Sturm Graz - TSV Hartberg Altach - Mattersburg 29.7 RB Salzburg - LASK Linz Admira Mödling - Rapid Wien St. Pölten - Wolfsberger
The Austrian Bundesliga has drastically changed its format starting with the upcoming 2018-2019 season. Working with a Dutch consulting firm, the format looks more like the ones currently in place in the Netherlands and Belgium. Each of the 12 Bundesliga teams plays twice against each other club. After those 22 rounds, the table is split in half. The top 6 comprise the Championship Group, while the bottom 6 are in the Qualification Group. Points earned in the first 22 rounds are cut in half (rounded down if an odd number) and carried into the second phase. Each Group of 6 now features two more home and away ties against each of the other clubs in the Group, resulting in 10 more rounds. At the end of this phase, the top team in the Championship Group is crowned Bundesliga Champions. The bottom team in the Qualification Group is relegated to the 16-team 2nd Liga (formerly Erste Liga). The top two (or three) Championship Group finishers as well as the Austrian Cup winners take their places in Europe, depending on how many spots are awarded to Austria. But in any case, one Europa League spot will be reserved for a Playoff between three clubs--the next two Championship Group finishers as well as the Qualification Group winner. The winner of the Qualification Group plays a single match at home against the lower Championship Group finisher. The winner of that game plays a home-and-away series against the higher Championship Group finisher for the final Europa League spot. For most Bundesliga clubs that don't compete in the Playoff for the last Europa League spot, the season will be 32 matches, down from the previous 36-round season in the old 10-team format.

Round 3 Salzburg retains a perfect record to lead the league. The big surprise for me so far is St. Pölten, which finished distant last in the Bundesliga last season and narrowly avoided relegation in the playoff. The club from Linz seems to be for real this year!

I just discovered the format change. The Netherlands has Europa League playoffs, but does not split into a top group and bottom group like Belgium does.
Round 11 LASK 1 - 1 Altach Salzburg 1 - 1 Wacker Innsbruck Hartberg 3 - 0 Rapid Wien Admira Mödling 0 - 0 Wolfsberger AC Mattersburg 2 - 0 St. Pölten Austria Wien 1 - 1 Sturm Graz Well, Salzburg finally gave up points with a draw against Innsbruck. But they still managed to increase the lead atop the league! Only two teams won, Hartberg and Mattersburg, both in the lower half of the table. Rapid dropped below both of those clubs to fall from 7th to 9th place.

Salzburg gave up points for the second week in a row, but the draw at second-place LASK meant the ten-point cushion was preserved. St. Pölten lost to drop a bit further off the pace.
Round 13 Admira Mödling 2 - 3 Hartberg Sturm Graz 1 - 1 Wacker Innsbruck St. Pölten 2 - 2 LASK Salzburg 2 - 1 Mattersburg Austria Wien 2 - 3 Wolfsberger AC Altach 2 - 2 Rapid Wien After two straight draws, Salzburg returned to its usual three points with a last-minute winner at home to Mattersburg. The two closest competitors LASK and St. Pölten played to a draw, meaning Salzburg's lead grew to 12 points. Three traditional Bundesliga powers Rapid, Austria, and Sturm are currently in places 6-8, right on the border of Championship Group and Qualification Group. Still nine more rounds for them to move up and firmly establish themselves in the top group competing for the title.
Round 14 LASK 5 - 1 Admira Mödling Sturm Graz 0 - 0 St. Pölten Wacker Innsbruck 1 - 0 Altach Wolfsberger AC 3 - 1 Rapid Wien Mattersburg 1 - 2 Hartberg Austria Wien 0 - 2 Salzburg Salzburg remains undefeated and maintains a 12-point lead over LASK. Needed some late goals to win at Austria. At the other end, Admira has been really struggling. Only 2 points in the last 6 rounds leaves them two points adrift. There's still plenty of opportunity to make up ground, especially in the second phase when they'll compete in the Qualification Group.
Hartberg has won 3 in a row to move up to 5th replacing Sturm Graz in the top 6! This leaves them and Rapid in the lower Half!
