The argument is that not all of our athletes are going to go into fut. the sport isn’t loved by all. Not even close.
Just as silly as making the case that because Mexico has a massive population they should be better at futbol...
Friendlies don't mean much. Russia plays European qualifiers though, it's whole different ball game than playing against El Salvador or Guatemala to secure the right to play the WC. Had they been in the CONCACAF, they would have had more opportunities to do better. Wining a confederation is better than nothing that's for sure, but still a minor title, not worth a Copa America or a Euro cup.
This. I knew a guy from rancho Chichiualcan who was crazy about badminton. Yet futbol is Mexico's #1, #2, #3, #4, #5 most popular sport. F1, lucha, NBA, baseball share the leftovers among them. Nowhere will you find a sport liked by 100% of the population, and futbol in Mexico is no exception. Still, some people are making it sound like it's almost a secondary sport, probably to downplay the fact that we're not good at it in spite of all the passion.
When your team has its best players, or close to it, in the starting 11, and at the end of the game the score is 1-4 in your opponent's favor, and you deduce that your team did good, ok, decent or reasonably well then you're not deducing right.
One of Uruguay’s goals was BS (Suarez dive). Jimenez missing a PK was an anomaly. Real score “should’ve” been 3-2 Uruguay. The score wasn’t a reflection of what truly happened in the game, IMO. Our young players had heart.. a lot of it. Notice that we were down the whole game and our players wouldn’t give up; they kept on going at it. Not sure that would’ve happened with our “A squad”, who has a history of mentally collapsing after being down a goal or two. Looking forward to more of these guys being part of our national team.
I love that people talk about what is wrong with Mexican football when the last 2 pages are clear examples of the problem. Terrible analysis , a bunch of bad criticism with worse solutions (if any) offered. This "no le echan ganas, they are mental midgets, la prensa esta bien en sus "criticas", our population, etc etc.
I'm not talking about the match. It is your belief that Mexican futbol is light years away from Europe and that Mexican youth are babied that tell me that you either have a poor understanding of the sport or you are still new to it.
It wasn't a friendly it was the Confederations Cup, and don't tell me they didn't take it seriously come on now
More than how many people follow football, in my opinion, what really set us apart from most South American countries, is how many really think of sports as a career. At least in Monterrey where football has became a religion, I didn't really feel the urge from my classmates and friends (and some where reaaaaally good) to be pro, not many seriously dreamed about it.
it depends on each region, the northwest and the southeast are all about baseball, specially Sonora, Sinaloa and Tabasco, in Nuevo Leon they love american football.
Bro, this was the first thing that came to my mind. I was waiting for the first person to say something like if all MEX boxers became footballers we would own lol. I would’ve had to tip my hat and leave at that point.
Our issue is scouting and training. Lainez type talents shouldn't be as rare. Lozano can't be the only fast Mexican on earth. Raul can't be the only striker with an actual modern strikers build. List goes on but the point is we haven't maximized our potential..
Not against elite teams, which not even the other European teams are able to consistently compete against. The national team has been able to remain a top 20 team, usually around 15-16th place, for the past 30 years which is far from being light years away..
