Attendance at pre-season games is a poor indicator of regular season. Now, it might be an indication of "poor" season ticket sales since most teams force season ticket holders to buy pre-season tickets with their regular season tickets.
I think you also have to look at it from a relative perspective - No team in the NFL is getting preseason attendance anywhere near that low. Anyway, Chargers attendance is a fun topic to discuss, but I suppose that discussion doesn't belong here. Just wanted to make a comparison to the Galaxy since its rare to say that an MLS team can outdraw an NFL team (though the NFL team has ticket prices 3x higher than the MLS team)
Most NFL teams' season ticket base is larger than that by a good degree, no? I dunno if the Chargers are withholding any tickets for walkups (or if it even makes any sense for them to do so), but given a stadium that holds ~25k in its NFL configuration, I don't see those numbers as that bad, especially if it's indicative of their season ticket holder base right now.
Chargers say they’ve sold out their ST and have less than a few hundred tickets per game remaining. I’m sure this won’t be mocked at all ... pic.twitter.com/a7gs1Bh6nm— Jay Posner (@JayPosnerSD) August 27, 2018 Aso probably going to have higher attendance than Galaxy and FC. Also, how much effort are they putting into selling tickets? As we’ve seen with MLS teams waiting on new stadiums, they might just be in a holding pattern until the Rams’ stadium is built.
They are advertising at least as much as the Rams are... They also announced the same thing last season, and then sold out like 2 of their games, none at the capacity they promised. I would put Rams and Chargers advertising on the same level as the Galaxy, though they have much better local TV deals, which is advertising in its own way.
Anyone know how adidas got 500 tickets for the Timbers game last night? They're a big sponsor but I thought most PTFC seats were sold on a season ticket basis?
I guarantee a set amount of tickets are held back specifically for sponsors and such for things just like that.
combination of tickets set aside for comps and unused Away Supporters tickets? Adidas also likely has a block of tickets already, seeing as their NA HQ is in Portland, Oregon.
how many sub 10k games have we had this year? It has to be at least a couple now, especially with DC United playing in small stadiums at the beginning of the year. I know DC, Columbus, and Chicago have all had at least 1.
yes, I got an email from a friend at adidas HQ. They were offered not only a free ticket to the game but 2 free Uber rides and 3 drink vouchers. What number does Portland cap their season tickets at?
21,363 in RSL (I believe this is the largest crowd at Rio Tinto) 22,912 in Orlando (I believe this is the smallest crowd at Orlando Stadium)
From my position on the sofa I'd say there were less than 10k in Orlando. I've seen sub capacity attendances there before but nothing like tonight. You can do all the marketing in the world and build the most beautiful stadium but if you put out a shit product eventually is going to come back to you.
Remember when Orlando was selling out the Citrus Bowl or whatever it is and people were saying they needed a 40k+ plus stadium? Pepperidge Farm remembers.
I think they only sold out the Camping World Stadium once or twice, but they did get over 30k many times...
Back in 2015 I went to RFK to watch DC United vs Orlando and as we were walking in I noted how large the crowd was. A Orlando fan walking near us remarked how she hadn't realized that DC still had fans. Pissed me off. At the time I wondered how long it would take for them to get their comeuppance. Less than 4 years. Oh the karma!
2015 Highest home attendance 62,510 vs NYCFC(Mar. 8) Lowest home attendance 22,241 vs Kansas City(Sept. 13) Average home league attendance 32,847
Shiny bew effect always happens. 1996 was the #1 attendence year for a long time. And remember attendence is a trailing indicator. It is usually the year after a team stinks/rebounds that things tumble/rebound. Extended periods of winning can bolster drops in attendence for a couple poor seasons. While extended sucking can kill the bounce on a couple good ones.
Less than a mile away at the Citrus Bowl, Alabama was slaughtering Louisville in front of 57,000. This may have affected Orlando City attendance.
Sorry, not allowed to use local college football games, weather, or a down season as a reason for lower attendance, or so I’ve been told.
