Oh, and don't get me started on the USL. Lou FC has a better TV deal than Preschool or McCullers ever conjured up and that stuff is unwatchable. I barely last a few minutes. Gettin' all Eurosnob-like in my older days. Serves Garber right.

In lieu of a slobbery tongue bath, I would easily settle for a robe, a ring on my finger, some new sandals, and a fattened calf.

The biggest things MLS had going for them was that it was live "high quality" soccer and that would help the men's national team be competitive. The high quality issue is up for debate. The development angle for the men's national team is also debatable considering their failed qualifying attempt. The fan disgust/backlash towards MLS was more than they expected as evidenced by the fact that they announced this 10 days after the US failed to qualify for the World Cup. They think we are suckers for live soccer. Can we all travel to Europe and see the Champions League knockout stages? No. Will some of us watch this http://www.npsl.com/teams to get our live soccer fix? Yes, guilty as charged. But do we have an obligation to give MLS our money because "First Division Soccer?"

I for one say no. They think otherwise.

This is part of MLS' problem with the TV ratings. For a lot of fans, if your team is not playing, MLS does not matter. There are a ton of superior leagues (La Liga, EPL, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, UEFA CL, UEFA Cup, Libertadores, etc) that are easily accessible. And this does not even consider the 'love my team, hate MLS' camp, which includes SJ, Columbus, much of DC, and keeps growing every day.

I've largely dismissed the whole "look at how much quality soccer is on TV" argument over the years. I'll tell you why in the form of a question: If you're a soccer fan in the United States, and you want to see live soccer in person, and not just watch a glorified reality TV show from another land, what are you choices? MLS, USL, NPSL, and the occasional summer friendly matches played by players wearing famous shirts and with numbers in the 30s and 40s.

Which is to say this: The reason why the Crew are in this situation and why so many other teams in other sports have been in situation is because cities will spend gobs of money on stadiums because people will turn out to those stadiums to watch their teams live and in person. The Sounders and AUFC will have 40,000 people turn out to their stadiums, and fully 95% of those people will know that their teams are of an inferior quality to most teams in the Premier League or Bundesliga or La Liga and that their teams play on plastic fields, further diminishing the quality of the soccer. And those people still turn up anyway.

    Why is that?

The reason is that sports are not like any other TV show. Even though televised sports have grown dramatically over the last 60 years, we have not yet got to the point where games are played in TV studios, nor are we likely to get there any time soon. In fact, we've headed the other direction: Getting people to spend more money when they attend the games live.

Here in the Denver area, I've got over-the-air affiliates of Univision (ch. 14), UniMás (ch. 50), Telemundo (ch. 25), and Azteca America (ch. 7-2). Forget streaming. I don't have to spend a single red cent to watch a league that is of a higher quality than MLS. I just plug the rabbit ears into my TV and I'm ready to go.

"Yeah, but the Rapids don't draw many fans."

But here's the thing: I'm pretty sure those networks are also over-the-air in Atlanta and Seattle and despite that, those teams are getting 40,000 a game. Why? Because those folks want to be soccer fans, not soccer viewers.

Honest to God, this whole notion of "televised soccer from all over the world is a threat to the domestic league" is a close relative to Dollar Bill Wirtz's refusal to put Blackhawks home games on Chicago-area TV when he was still alive. It does not stand up to any sort of emperical scrutiny. There's way more televised soccer available than there was 20 years ago when I was at the Cotton Bowl with 4,000 of my closest friends. And yet, FCD gets more fans today at a stadium that people swear is on the other side of the moon.

I don't think the TV ratings issue is a threat to the league. That is ridiculous.

Just saying the reasons MLS' rating are so low are:
    1) A lot of better options out there
    2) A lot of STH types in MLS love their teams but loathe MLS. They watch their team (in person or on TV for road matches), but that is it.

I have it on good authority that Timon is going back to a platypus as his avatar.

And by good authority, i mean it's an idea that just popped into my head right at this moment.*

It's pretty simple. He's trying to have it both ways, just one would expect: "Columbus hasn't done enough for us thus far, but if Columbus were to do more for us, we're more than happy to stay in Columbus because moving is a pain in the ass."

There's something in his statement for everyone. I'm sure that the Hipster 6 will look at his statement and say that he's TOTALLY on board with moving the Crew to Austin.

I didn't even mention TV ratings. That's a whole other discussion right there. But what I will say that there is only professional sports league where fans will tune into regular-season games not involving their local team, and that's the NFL. MLS is hardly unique in that aspect.

My bad. I thought you were connecting the dots between availability of better leagues on TV, low TV ratings & and threat to the league.

Strongly disagree on your NFL notion. I watch La Liga & EPL all the time. Do not have a dog in the hunt. Ditto NBA games not involving the Cavs. Hardly alone there. You think Man United supporters don't watch Citeh v Liverpool or Arsenal v Spurs?

Insert "North American" in front "professional sports league" in my previous post.

Atlanta still has the new car smell and Seattle is one of the haves. What should be more alarming is DC not selling out their stadium or various empty seats around the league masquerading as sold tickets. When Seattle's GM calls their supporter's section "nothing but cheap tickets" get back to me. What's lost in this is the fact that soccer fans were pushed away for the first decade of MLS existence. It's more difficult to get a customer to return when you have actively scorned them. It's even harder when they realize how poor the actual product is compared to what else is available.
