Garber has been rather vocal about how "bad" a market Columbus is and has insulted a lot of business leaders here. That speaks to me of something other than indifference. And it's puzzling--some of those businesses are or could someday be MLS sponsors. Like Honda--or Wendys. Using "business metrics" is one thing--and would have been sufficient for their purposes, frankly. The hostility toward some sponsors is what is puzzling.

Lamar was a rarity when it comes to sports and businessmen. Though I do love the fact he once randomly tried to corner the world's silver supply via forced acquisitions, makes him sound like the nicest bond villain ever.

Evidently, in winter in Siena, they hold a little kids Palio, with the kids dressed up in their neighborhood colors, running circuits around Il Campo.

They may think MLS has the better of the legal arguments, but it would be foolish for them to in effect place a bet on the outcome when they could just wait and see what actually happens.

That said, we'd likely not have the NHL at all had McConnell not ponied up. They were ready to move on. There might have been a team later, but by that point tOSU would have had the market cornered for concerts and the like.

It was a very tough call. He might have gotten a bit better deal had he waited--but not with much city money, as we found out when the votes failed.

After the influence Garber had on the last USSF election, I lump them together. Those that think Garber is a lackey working for the BoG are hugely underestimating his influence.

    Garber doesn't work for AP.

Once upon a time, Nationwide Arena was privately financed too. That lasted eleven years. I don't think Estadio McKalla makes it that long. I'd put the over/under at eight years before Authentically Austin Athletic FC's new owners go crying to city about how they need bailed out on that just gosh darn awful deal that mean ol' PSV accepted way back in 2018. Please, please, subsidize our for-profit enterprise more or the business metrics will make us move to Sacramento or Indianapolis.

Its not true. The poster is mistaken.

Lamars brothers took a swing at cornerjjng the silver market. Came within a hesrtbeat of pulling it off.

Lamar Hunt was not part of the deal.

That whole deal was a bit of shame. I think ideally we get the Lamar NHL franchise is a city arena downtown, and OSU renovates the gorgeous St. John Arena and doesn't bother trying to get into the concert market. Probably no way that could've happened (as it didn't), but that's the timeline I'd have preferred.

They may also be doing so. We don’t know what kind of ‘out’ clauses the loan agreement has.

Regarding the referendum, the argument for scuttling the deal would be that the council wants to turn over public land for decades to an out of state private equity guy. That there are local investors willing to pay fair market value for the land and pay taxes. If you want to go for the jugular, you could point out his history of poor treatment of Hispanic fans and female players.

Garber very well may have a grudge against Columbus, but he loves money and favorable real estate deals more. Ultimately, it's not his decision anyway. Do the other 22 I/Os hate this market enough to turn down $300-400 million in cash, land and new world-class facilities? Are they above 11,000 people here pledging to buy tickets while many of their own supporters are threatening to close their wallets if the move is allowed? This whole situation was about money. I struggle to think it will suddenly be about revenge for something that happened 20 years ago.

A large amount of loans were floated by his brothers which involved Hunt family assets. When his brothers declared bankruptcy some creditors went after Lamar, who settled with them.

This is an old story. Trust me. I know a thing or three .

Look at it this way: the brothers were on the hook for an edtimated $4.3 billion in margin calls on longs.

Lamar settled this suit for $2.3 million. Merril Lynch and a dozen others settled on similar terms.

Look at the numbers and not what somd moron writing at Wikipedia. It WAS NOT Lamar .

Well, except that tOSU was already well on the way to building their new place. Mind you, I love St John Arena--but tOSU wanted a real concert facility and a better place for ice hockey--and one with more seating and private boxes.

Fair enough. I was just looking at the sources. If he settled the suit which NYT reported he did it seemed like he was involved. In either case, his brothers spearheaded the entire thing.

Not the end of the world, at best sort of a funny anecdote and hardly the worst thing a businessman has tried haha.
