Detroit’s two soccer worlds collide at matches Updated 5:01 a.m. ET July 19, 2017 http://www.detroitnews.com/story/sp...-two-soccer-worlds-collide-matches/103818278/ Yet you could argue that what’s also on display this week are the contrasting visions for the sport’s future in Detroit — one organic, the other manufactured — and the challenge that entails for all involved. And as Detroit prepares to take the game professional in the coming months, with billionaire NBA owners Dan Gilbert and Tom Gores spearheading the city-backed bid for a Major League Soccer franchise while DCFC ownership plots its own course, it does beg the question for many area soccer fans: Where do we grow from here? “I think that’s kind of the parable, right?” said Mann, one of a handful of young entrepreneurs who started DCFC six years ago with a used riding mower and a $5,000 league fee and now boast a $1 million operating budget. “Wednesday night, yeah, those players on the field are infinitely better than our players -- no one is going to challenge you there. But what about the whole experience? What’s the atmosphere like?
i think gores-gilbert want to buy the DCFC brand for MLS... but the authenticity wont come along with it in my opinion. will these 5 entrepenurs sell to cash in though?
There has to be some way to bring them into the fold. Are there any analogies or similarities between the Cascadian teams rise and a potential MLS team up?
Even if G&G buy out DCFC and take it's identity to MLS....the diehard supporters who loathe MLS can always rally behind something else. In a city as big as Detroit, there's plenty of room for more soccer in the area. There will still be a demand for another similar team that college players in the region can play for. With that said...a lot of those fans have invested a lot of time and money into building that team so I can see how they would take it personally.

just amazing that to a D4 team... DCFC needs to get out of the NPSL and find a league that suits them and their ambitions... this from a LanU fan, well done DCFC
well OTOH...why try and fix what ain't broken? Last I heard their profits were in the range of $1mill year, so any "promotion" into USL1 or USL3 would clearly eat into those profits. I say stay where you are and enjoy what you have in front of you...a full plate!
And then claim that their team is the ONLY one allowed to represent soccer in Detroit, and that no one, not even MLS, is allowed to put another team in the city.
I believe that what they claim is that they would be the only authentic team in Detroit. Grown from nothing, I can't really disagree much.
nope no way...plucking down $250mill buys you a MLS franchise and then they vote and you are awarded a team...that is not the same at all as building a club from the ground up.
Six to one, half done the other as far as I'm concerned. You still have to build from the ground up, no matter what the situation is. The DCFC crowd act as if their entitled to hold onto the entire city of Detroit as their property. Spoiled self absorbed privilege isn't going to get you far.
well we will have to agree to disagree...I feel that one is organic and the other is not. But I wish the both well...the more soccer there is the better for everyone.
first of all...the NPSL conferences vote on your admission...not the entire league. folks can correct me if I am wrong but I believe that Detroit City FC originally played in a stadium which fit 4,500. Currently they play at a stadium which holds 7,500 they have grow the team inch by inch. That for me is an example of organic growth...you plant the seed, water it and watch it grow. MLS does not have the same "feel". I don't really care if the Northern Guard supporters feel entitled or not...I want all teams everywhere to be a success. But for me...watching the kiddies and the team grow is much more appealing. To each his own...some folks like rhubarb...I do NOT!
great question Red Rover...I have no idea...but if you had a business which ran only a couple of months each year and which generated a mill in profits, is there really an incentive for massive change? My thought is to continue to play in the NPSL until the well runs dry. Maybe that never happens...more power to them!
