Down 2-0 in the second half, the VB City FC women scores back-to-back goals to tie it up. Savyon Hammond scored in the 67th minute, while Starland White tied it up in the 71st.
That's an interesting result. The Spirit reserves are in the WPSL college league this summer. They are mostly college students back for the summer looking to keep in shape and show for potential NWSL draft. Some of the kids are still in high school and the best of the Spirit DA team. http://washingtonspirit.com/teams/washington-spirit-reserves-2018/
Three Washington Spirit games, including two home games, will be nationally televised on ESPNEWS during the remainder of the 2018 National Women's Soccer League season. The Washington Spirit has launched a Luxury Suite Giveaway for the club's first-ever home game at Audi Field, coming up August 25 against Portland Thorns FC.
Is Gabarra on the hot seat yet? He dismantled a team capable (seconds away) of winning it all, with nothing to show for it....
He should be on the hot seat. The team has talent but he can't put it together sufficiently to win a game.
Here's a sobering thought: Since the start of May, the Spirit have played 8 games and only scored in the middle 2 of them, a 1-0 win of Sky Blue and a 3-2 loss to Houston. 5 of those 8 results could have been changed (L->D or D->W) with just one goal. Definitely a problem with the coach if this roster is having so much trouble scoring.
The Spirit are a young team--not a lot of experience, especially up front. Sullivan, Quinn and Hatch are all rookies--not ideal in a league with few teams and, as a consequence, a lot of experience. The Spirit need a proven center forward/striker; Hatch should be coming off the bench. That is an issue. Not having Lavelle has also hurt them a lot--but even if Lavelle were playing, she's what a second year player? Third? Pugh is still a work in progress and far from an accomplished player. Certainly can be dangerous with her pace, is improving, but also, IMO, overrated. Young! So that accounts for a lot of their scoring woes--and I doubt there's been much chemistry ever. Compare the Spirit up front with Carolina (midfield and forwards)--the latter very athletic, very experienced, been playing together for a while. No comparison. Washington clearly also doesn't have much depth of talent. There is no reason why they can't get better, but if I were GM of that team I'd be working to find a proven scorer, and then getting Lavelle on the field would help.
The Washington Spirit's home game at Audi Field on August 25 against Portland Thorns FC will now kickoff at 8 p.m. ET to accommodate the national TV schedule on ESPNEWS.
