WATCH THIS THREAD IF YOU LIKE LISTS

    HotJam starts the ball rolling:

"not FIFA's stupid system, but here would be my current standings

    1) United States
    2) Germany
    3) France
    4) Netherlands
    5) England
    6) Spain
    7) Japan
    8) Canada
    9) Australia
    10) North Korea"

The "Power Rankings" thing came from American sports, I think(?). And they seemed interesting when I first saw them. As if there's a bizarro league we don't know about! And it exists inside a journalist's head! Sadly, Power Rankings have now fallen to number 7 in the list of "best ways to rank things", but if you have a great power ranking you want to share, maybe you'll help them go up the table.

    So, to recap the arguments:

    Pro:
    "not FIFA's stupid system"

    Anti:
"Some of the power rankings is stupid"

    ^ That's not a well-argued webpage btw

If Babett Peter becomes a regular under Voss-Tecklenburg, Germany’s not even top ten if you ask me

now they might barely be top ten in the world

I've got Germany trending in 6½ th place at the current moment, but we need more data urgently. Fifa should make a new tourney where teams come to play each other, and call it "The Cup of The World".

Peter can't be as bad as Millie Bright(who's 3 own goals at SBC made her the tourney's unofficial leading scorer). When Bright's not busy deflecting shots, you've seen her when Harder blew right past her at the CL game(WOB vs Chelsea)

MVT, started Kiwic,at CB for the Swiss NT., Yep, the same slow poke Kiwic that JoJo had to baby sit at Potsdam! The shape of things to come under MVT?

That said, I'm definitely not 100% against power rankings:
So I'll contribute with this! ESPNW power rankings from earlier this month.

Considering is hasn't stated what its system is, I guess it's fair to include in this thread, though if we can discover what its quantification method is, then it's not really a "power ranking" any more. Which is okay! I mentioned the Glicko method in the FIFA rankings thread, and I know 583.com usually puts something together right before a WWC. I know I've come across a third alternate method before that breaks each team's rating into six or so components, but I can't find that site right now... Either way, I would love to start another thread (once I find these different systems) about alternate quantitative methods and comparing their accuracy.

I can't believe they've put the Northern Mariana Islands above Lebanon, that is so typical. They must be ignoring away goals or something.

I was a bit doubtful about the new MIFA top 20, but actually I've come round to it. Now we've got 2 lists! So much data to analyze! Actually, neither list has many placements I would argue with.

On the other hand, let's have an argument, as some teams are high in one list and low in the other, marked below in green and red. How come? IMO this is because the MIFA system is based on "domination", while the HotJam system rewards "intensity"(?), is this true?

First, a reminder of the HJ ten:

    1) United States
    2) Germany
    3) France
    4) Netherlands
    5) England
    6) Spain
    7) Japan
    8) Canada
    9) Australia
    10) North Korea

    1.) USA
    2.) Australia ↑
    3.) France
    4.) England
    5.) Netherlands
    6.) Canada
    7.) Germany ↓
    8.) Japan
    9.) Brazil ↑
    10.) Denmark
    11.) Sweden
    12.) Spain ↓
    13.) China
    14.) Italy
    15.) Norway
    16.) South Korea
    17.) Iceland
    18.) Switzerland
    19.) North Korea ↓
    20.) New Zealand
    21.) Mexico

I was wondering if there might be a female equivalent to men's soccer's Unofficial Football World Championships, turns out YES THERE IS and it's absolutely fascinating but DON'T go down the rabbit hole, here's the rabbit hole

    - http://www.rsssf.com/miscellaneous/unoff-wc-wom.html (Archived)

^ That runs from 1969 to 2006. It started with the first unofficial 1969 women's Euro final, and after that, a team held the title until they lost a match:

    [ 1] 02.11.1969 Turin ------------ Italy - Denmark ------------ 3 - 1

Italy were the first holders, followed by

    [ 5] 15.07.1970 Turin ------------ Italy - Denmark ------------ 0 - 2 Denmark
    [ 17] 09.07.1977 M'hamina -------- Denmark - Sweden -------- 0 - 1 Sweden
    [ 27] 25.07.1979 Rimini, ITA -------- Sweden - Denmark -------- 0 - 1 Denmark
    [ 37] 19.07.1981 Helsinki, FIN -------- Denmark - Sweden -------- 1 - 2 Sweden
    [ 41] 16.07.1982 Herning, DEN -------- Sweden - Norway -------- 0 - 1 Norway

The UFWC board has a thread about it, with the relevant games in 2017 and 2018 on this page:

    - http://ufwc.proboards.com/thread/64/womens-ufwc?page=5 (Archived)

    And on Twitter, https://twitter.com/wufwc

It turns out the current best team in the world are Spain, who retained the championship by beating Israel in June

I remember making a page on Wikipedia for the WUFWC, but it was deleted a week later for not being notable enough. Sad day.

^ Sorry, that was sarcasm against people who only think the top 2 or 3 teams exist and nobody else is important.

In fact, the real number of teams that exist is six.

Hmm, the North American championship results do look like someone's power ranking

    CONCACAF 2018–2022
    (Beta version)

    1st [IMG] USA
    2nd [IMG] Canada
    3rd [IMG] Jamaica
    4th [IMG] Panama
    5th [IMG] Costa Rica
    6th [IMG] Mexico
    7th [IMG] Trinidad & Tobago
    8th [IMG] Cuba

By 2022 Concacaf will iron out some of the issues, right?
