It started before that - back in 1994 Nigeria had a team that could have beaten anyone, but they got an unlucky draw and their inexperience let them down. The 2006 Ivory Coast team also were a team that could have beaten anyone (for a guess, I'd say in a 3 match series with the eventual champions they would have won...)but were very unlucky to get both the Dutch and the Argies in the group of death and lose both tight fierce games 2-1

While other teams have picked up their game. The team that was the boss of concacaf on years past have backslid and been overtaken by teams looking forward.

Welp, we played much better than I thought. The nutmeg on Pique and the header that just went over would've been legendary.

Guess we'll have to knock out Crynaldo and the Portugal scum.

Iran played ok (for a team playing in bare feet) while Spain were stuck in 2nd gear.....small little things like the nutmeg by Amiri, most of the bigger sides still coasting in the group stages and 'the pundits' talking nonsense on tv is what makes the world cup worth watching( for now).....until the knoclout stages

And it's called the Liverpool way!!
Watching this WC is like watching a bad re-run of the defensive football of the 90's. The international game is so far behind the club game.
I was excited about the tournament, but watching the dour, boring, uninspiring, footy on display has really tempered that excitement. I stopped watching every match today after the 25th minute or so.

That said, if Isco is seriously leaving real and we don't go after him, what are we doing? Want a perfect upgrade on coutinho? It's him. Smart. Quick. Hardworking. Versatile. Been the only player on the Spanish team worth talking about so far.

And if Ronaldo wonders why he isn't as liked as much as Messi, this last game is exhibit A. Yes, you can appreciate he scores goals- lots of goals, but then he'll do this and lose all his credibility.

The play by play talent calling footy has improved a great deal. I can tolerate JP Delacamera, though he gets overly excited about nothing too often, but he's miles better than Ty Keough ever was. Mark Followill has impressed me. I'd never heard him do a match before this World Cup. He's been good. John Strong is pretty good too. At least I'm not cringing constantly any more.

They all talk waaaaay too much. But still much better than they used to be. Certainly no Marcelo Balboa levels of bad this year (despite Warren Barton's best efforts to ruin the current match).

    Ty Keough. Ugh!
I still tire of the over splaining. Who needs to know what sort of toys a player had when he was 3.

Just listening to : Australia had more passes than Japan in 2006 WC. This while the ozzies were pressing for a shot.

I know it's the way with US sports. For me it goes back to the start of Monday night football. You kids won't remember that with Howard Cossell and OJ. He claimed that ex players don't make good comms. And dead air time is a waste of time. ( no real football in those days)
No danger of dead air time in this Ozzie Denmark game. Yadda yadda yadda. Every time a player touches the ball we get his biography.
Yeah, Warren Barton and his partner are going to need jaw massages after this.

Oops, sub on. 2 years ago he scored 10
Goals for Layton Orient. I wonder when he read that if he knew what a Layton Orient was.

I can't open the vid. But if it ends with him sitting in the area appealing for VAR. he needed his head kicking.

Then Pepe gets a pat on the back and collapses in a heap. There's no shame these days and it's seen by millions around the world.

I've recorded all the games and unless I have a real interest like Engerland or Oz. then after 1/2 hour I'll fast forward and stop it when/if a goal is scored, then speed on again.

Agreed. Mark Followill is a local for us in Dallas. He did announcer work at the Cotton Bowl during the Dallas Burn days. He currently does play-by-play for Mavericks (NBA for non-Yanks) and FC Dallas games on TV. He's broken into Fox in the last year calling international games and I was very pleased to see them bring him to the WC.

The only complaint I have with Fox is the Univision guy they brought in. He's awful, has awful catchphrases and his Spanish broadcasts are about the same (from what I hear). Not too crazy about Stu Holden sometimes but he's not that bad...I guess.

The guy calling the play by play alongside Mariano Trujillo might be that guy. They talk entirely too much and he constantly calls throw-ins "hand ball".

I still prefer a good British announcer, but the Americans are getting better. Followill is from Justin, TX. I used to buy my boots there sometimes. Wonder if he wears ropers ( a kind of low heeled cowboy boots for the uninitiated ).

That fooking woman's school marm strident monotone is really getting to me. There, she's gone.

Too bad, I've liked Derick Rae from way back in his German league games, when he did it alone.

Football is so cruel sometimes. Peru out after two losses, despite playing well.

Her cadence is weird. So many of her sentenced end sounding like something more is coming. She's a verbal ellipsis.

I hope this changes in the knockout rounds or lookout for extra time and PKs.
