During the glory years, we had an interesting and very competent combination of a very technical, fast attack combined with a "smashmouth" defense. I think this might still be a winning combination in MLS.

So far, with the exception of one run, Godoy looks to be in the same form we've seen this year. He is looking slow and disconnected from the rest of his team.

Well Donovan was very fast and technical, that's for sure. In his early days, about as fast in bursts as I've ever seen in soccer. DeRo - not as fast but certainly technical.

DeRosario was also a very skillful player.

There's Godoy getting another stupid, unnecessary yellow..

I'm not so sure... Mexico looked very, very good. And I think, if the coach decides to stop tinkering, that counter attacking style with their ability to control at the same time, would be very difficult to beat.

Meh, 26 shots to 13, 8 corners to 1, 66% possession. That's not normally a game you lose 1-0. I get it - Mexico had some good breaks, but Germany had so many good looks on goal but just couldn't get the bounces yesterday. It happens in soccer.

That's what counter attacking teams do. The difference with Mexico (fi they choose to play a counter attacking style) is that while they are counter attacking they have the skill of a control team leading to much better quality opportunities when they are near the box.

All they need is belief and a good run. The next two games are very winnable, their round of 16 looks not as bad, then Germany (likely) again. If they win that, I would make them the favorite to win it all.

Counterattacking is well and good but it's not like Germany wasn't getting any chances. And if Germany gets ahead, they will play a little more conservatively, and then what's Mexico going to do? That's the problem with counterattacking. It doesn't work well when you are behind. First of all you're not going to get the ball much at that point because Germany possesses it well and they will be less apt to take chances. Secondly you will be counterattacking against defensive numbers. I'm pretty confident that Germany will beat them if they play again.

And besides, the DFB is our partner, and that has Mexico really worried! :)

I haven’t been a fan of England in years and never follow EPL but I’m glad they won!

Teams from the same group are placed on opposite sides of the draw for the knockout stage; hence, they can meet again only in the final or third place match.

    Germany looks old.

Folks, Germany is around the 6th youngest team at the WC. They are stocked with young talent. Mexico is 2nd oldest.

German players have spent four years listening to everyone telling them their sh*t doesn't stink. It was no surprise they were complacent and were sucker-punched by an aggressive team playing with heart.

Maybe I overstated... Germany looked old yesterday and seemed kind of slow....

Rafa Marquez at almost 40 years of age, I’m sure brings Mexico’s age limit up.

Not as much as Marquez amps up El Tri's dislikable quotient. I almost stopped rooting for them when he entered the game.

Wonder what Shea Salinas was thinking at that point?

I don't know - I was impressed with how calm on the ball they were. They were able to slowly work the ball into the final 3rd and somehow slot passes into very tight spaces for some dangerous chances. That's what's always impresssed me about them - the little movements and perfectly weighted passes they make in the final 3rd against packed defenses to create chances.

Ultimately they failed to get the equalizer but I think the process was fine. If you are able to create chances against packed in defenses you've won at soccer because there's no way to stop it.

They were catatonic. Playing without passion.
