No major league is ever going to take New Mexico seriously without both a deep-pocketed owner and a proven fan base of Sacramento, Indy, or Orlando scale. But in USL, they would be a natural rival to the Switchbacks.
A couple cringe worthy points made by that author (PDL = Double A baseball, need 5K attendance to move from PDL to USL), but the owners seem to be taking a good approach.

There are loose connections to the Sol. Some front office staff are moving over to the USL team but the two teams are not directly connected. According to some friends of mine in Albuquerque the team name is believed to be New Mexico United.
They had three finalist names publicly announced: 1. Olé New Mexico 2. New Mexico Fútbol Club 3. New Mexico Enchanted I have not heard anything about NM United. According their twitter, they are announcing the name in the first week of October.
Looks like someone registered New Mexico United FC and New Mexico United trademarks back in December 2017. So your information wasn't inacurate. Maybe they were just place holder names. The current name ideas came out of suggestions sent in by fans.
