    Sure they would.

    Ref: "What do you have?"

VAR: "You're screwed. Back to you."

    Ref: "Out."

    Midwest, the real one.
That would be....weird. Whenever you don't want to make the call, just say you don't have video.

Then why not just explain this to the pool reporter questions?

"The player is telling me he got slapped or punched. What do you see?"

"Nothing, man, we got nothing. Video is blank. Technical difficulties and whatnot."

"Are you sure? I mean, this game is going nuts down here and if he really got punched... I mean, if you can't help me out on this, can you at least give me an idea on what to give my friend for his wedding present?"

"Candlesticks always make a nice gift."

I get that you are joking, but I have a related question nonetheless, because I honestly don't know. Isn't all VAR communication initiated by the VAR guy? I assumed that all communication between the ref and the VAR guy is initiated by the VAR guy, but I guess I don't actually know that for a fact.

There's two logical conclusions to make

    1) Jorge Gonzalez made what was probably the most baffling VAR decision in the programs two year history

    2) They had technical issues

I'm biased and generally cheer for the third team so I hope it wasn't a terrible lapse of judgement from Gonzalez. However, on the other hand it would be the 2nd known VAR technical issue (other was the Aussie Grand Final) in the past month or so and FIFA can't afford a mistake like that to occur in the World Cup.

If the poster had bothered to look up the next tweet which was posted 10 minutes later, he/she probably would have seen Doug's response when asked about what he meant with his original tweet.

McIntyre's a good writer and he had some good stuff at ESPN. This is what happens when people like Ted and a few other South Florida writers get a platform and people give them the same respect as actual journalists. It sucks because there is a lot of space in soccer media, albeit low/no pay, but a lot lack basic journalistic principles and just throw stuff at the wall until it sticks.

Yes it is and it generally follows a script to prevent miscommunication -- especially in cases where the referee has 10 players surrounding him yelling in his ear.

The referee and assistant referees are absolutely allowed to request a check if they suspect that a correctable error has or may have been made, but they're not continuously communicating. Typically the VAR will cut in and ask the ref to delay the restart or otherwise assure them that an incident is being checked so that the ref can manage the players. Once they recommend a review, that's when they start giving the ref information and advice so that hopefully the correct call can be made.

PRO has released a few clips from the recording of the VAR screen but they've never released referee communication.

If anyone is curious what it looks like when the VAR is doing a check and tells the referee to review, PRO posted the video from the KC/Atlanta deflection goal. I think it's interesting but regular fans may not. The video is about 2/3rds of the way down this page.

Or calling make-up penalties. It’s clearly that. Ignoring a cardable offense because you’ve done something previous in the match that disadvantaged the team.

    Thx,

I read the pool reporters aren’t allowed to ask about VAR.

    Nice CYA.

It was later clarified. You can ask why a decision was made, but you can't ask about the conversation between the ref and VAR per the CBA.

Still crap but slightly less crap.

So let's say hypothetically the problem was technical difficulties and VAR didn't have video at that moment. Then let's say that the technical difficulties get resolved 20 minutes later. VAR can go back and recommend a red card be given to the player at that point? That would be... interesting, to say the least.
