This is a great post. I know the feeling. We are living in a new world. But new can be hopeful. My sincere hope is that this movement is not just SaveTheCrew but changes the conversation about soccer in America. I wish for a new Crew with a different mentality and focus. My dream scenario is: The Crew stay in Columbus. Tony never owns a soccer team again (maybe an Ultimate Frisbee team) and losses money when he sells the team. Garber gets the boot. More Modell laws are passed. MLS focuses on their original teams which are struggling.
I will say that I was able to independently validate some of their issues with specific people involved in STC, but I didn't know about said issues at the time. I think there were some personality clashes. I believe that everyone's hearts are in the right place but for whatever reason not everyone is willing to come to the table. Watching how the whole thing affected Justin was, quite honestly, gut wrenching. He's always seemed like a guy with strong convictions, whether one agrees with him or not.
Well, Mookie and I were in the Nordecke for that game and I'd just like to say that "silence" is a serious non-fact. It seemed to us that the problem was the very hard core showed up about 2 hours early and screamed their lungs out for that whole time. By the time the game started, everybody was exausted. It wasn't lack of passion it was bad judgement. On another note, my goodness but this Morgan fellow seems to be personally responsible for a lot of things. Was he also the wheel man for the Lindburgh kidnapping? Come on. Seems like he's become the scapegoat for a lot of people's own shortcomjngs.
I'll post this - it's been significantly anonymized and was from a private facebook group, so there are going to be some in-jokes (meth, etc). It's obviously from the Einheit side, so take it that way. Again, I feel like everyone has their hearts in the right place but for whatever reason they can't just sit down and resolve it. https://imgur.com/a/wUAq7 It is also very long, so don't let your eyes glaze over. At least one person that has been anonymized will be pretty easy to figure out if you know the history of Columbus supporter culture.
Just like you I have only seen the "posturing and trolling" and have been able to put some pieces of the story together from various posts on social media. But I keep coming back to this one thought that I have trouble wrapping my head around... People actually stopped supporting the team because of the actions of other fans?...not the team itself, but other fans? So incredibly weak. Makes no sense what so ever to me that someone would let anyone have influence over them self and what they love/support. I know the guy who created the "Welcome Atlanta" picture with Sherman also created a lot of other cool things so it's a shame he isn't active anymore doing his thing. But again without knowing all the details..why leave?
From my understanding it was also that (at the behest of said individuals?) the team made it difficult for them as well. If I wanted to save the crew, Justin would be one of the first people I'd call.
So... Are we trying to talk about things in Crew supporters’ history that are dramatic and depressing other than our “owner” stealing our team? Hey hang can you point to some other writer that can help me deal with my current lived experience as I read this thread?
Reminds me of a poster who was once a regular around here for years... and now lounges on a beach somewhere... I really like that guy.
This is where I am at as well. We only get to see one game a year when we make the trek north to see family in Ohio (Columbus, Cambridge, Sandusky). We have been doing this since day one. We plan our trips around it. We have the opportunity to see the Orlando game in July but we are so disgusted by this whole process, that we are considering actually not going. MLS has revealed themselves to be nothing other than NFL imitators. From expecting tax revenues to pay for their private playgrounds to attempting to move the FIRST f***ing team, I wan't nothing to do with them. It may have nothing to do with the Crew fiasco, but from the looks of their TV ratings and pictures of actual attendance, a lot of other people have a lot better things to do than watch MLS.
So I meant to respond to this second part, but it was left out of my response. I have no real opinion of Morgan. After asking around these past couple months, some people seem to love him and others seem to say he is an iffy character. People I think very highly of sit in both camps. Not sure where the truth lies. For what it is worth, I prefer to make my own assessment of people. Edit: Upon reflection, I think it matters not right now what we think of each other. If they are on the good side, then we fight together. Not against each other.
Whenever I hear/read about SG drama, I can't help but laugh. It genuinely amuses me, especially the folks who think they are "hooligans" (note: I do not mean HSH) or "ultras" and disparage folks who don't "support" like they do and because of that aren't "real" fans. They are the reason I don't sit in Nordecke anymore (also because I go to matches to watch soccer which is hard to do in Nordecke most of the time). Anyway, back on topic. I am interested to see how fast things move in court. Generally, cases move glacially slow, and even though the appeal is on an "accelerated calendar", I saw mentions that it likely won't be ruled on till the third week of June.
What if the hipster 6 supporters group in Austin does know something? What if they are not wrong? What if their artery’s are all clogged up with queso? Just sayin....
I guess they might know something. Evidence show their heads to be fairly empty though. What could they know? They can think it is a done deal because an unnamed sports exec in another sport said congratz to them? What bank is going to finance stadium construction for a team that is mired in litigation that would prevent them from moving to that stadium? The court case may not go our way, but until it's resolved, The Columbus Crew are not going anywhere.
Pretty much this. There could be a photo op in Austin, but that doesn't mean this is over. PSV and the MLS can stamp their feet and put their hands over their ears but doing so doesn't make litigation go away. Wonder if they'd be petty enough to give Austin a franchise and assign all our players to it, making us rebuild next year.
I asked Justin once and he was pretty deferential about it. He would not talk bad about anyone specifically and again very vague. You could tell he had been very hurt and I can respect walking away from something that hurts you. I like Justin and I do miss his contribution to the Crew cause. I just don't understand the fairly consistent Einheit or other whomever they are people who just come back to troll Crew fans. A lot of these fans were not even around when "things happened." And as a "west side causal" as I think I would be called, it just make supporters look bad. Anyway, here is to a win and a wonderful holiday weekend.
As I count down the minutes until we get to set off for Kansas City, I have both an excitement for the upcoming trip, yet I fight the sadness that is just sitting in the background. This could be the one and only away trip with my kids. Sure not the end of the world, but my god does that thought suck. I am not dying (at least hopefully not soon), but my companion of many years, my Crew, is on life support. I feel very lucky to have an opportunity to go on the road and show my support to this team that has had a positive impact on my life. Perhaps the last time. This weekend is going to be a rollercoaster of emotions much like these last seven+ months. I am going to try not to cry and instead enjoy the moments. I have never been much of a photo-taker, but this trip I am going to try. Hope the kids will have some evidence of their mother being cool and passionate. They can tell some hypothetical future sibling (whenever that happens, not today) that they remember their mama having passion for a soccer team. Our Crew.
