Further evaluation of the current roster vs Emery's typical tactics... 4-3-3 formation ----------- ST ------------ LW -------------------RW ---- DLP ------- CM ---- ----------- DM ------------ LB --- CB --- CB --- RB ----------- GK ------------- or ----------- ST ------------ LW -------------------RW ----------- CM ------------ ---- DLP ------- DM ---- LB --- CB --- CB --- RB ----------- GK ------------- ST - PAE, Laca, Welbeck LW - Miki, PAE, Iwobi, Welbeck RW - Ozil, Iwobi, Nelson, Welbeck DLP - Xhaka, Wilshire, Iwobi CM - Ramsey, AMN, Iwobi DM - ElNeny RB - Bellerin LB - Nacho, Kola CB - Mustafi, Chambers, Holding, Mavropanos GK - Cech, Ospina Thoughts - ST is in decent shape. Personally I would like to keep Laca around for another season to see what he can accomplish in a new scheme. Really want Welbeck replaced with a younger option with better touch that can more effectively play W. - W is in pretty good shape. - I think DLP & CM are actually in good shape. Need to give those 2 spots a season to see if they can adjust to the new system. I think Xhaka & Ramsey will be a good pairing for Emery as long as he can help correct some of their habits. - DM needs another player badly. I think ElNeny has potential but we A) can't go with just 1 player and B) need a quality starter. - CB is obviously an issue. I'd be willing to give Mustafi a chance next to a veteran CB with a track record for directing the back line. Not opposed to replacing him either. If we have 2 healthy vet starters, I think we will be ok with the 3 young-uns as backups. - LB is in good shape for next season but we desperately need a backup RB to challenge Bellerin and provide depth fro EL & FA cup. - We could stick with our current GK tandem if we had to but it would be really nice to upgrade Ospina and move Cech to the backup role. Short version... Needs - 1 DM, 1-2 CB, RB Wants - GK, ST/W
Lacazette needs to stick around for two reasons. One, he makes the forward corps significantly better than it would be otherwise, and bringing in another player of his quality will be prohibitively expensive. Two, if Aubameyang gets hurt and Lacazette is gone, that team has a glaring lack of pace. Beyond that, for as frustrating as he was for parts of the season, Lacazette still averaged a goal every 162 minutes (197 if you don't include penalties). That's not bad for a guy in his Premier League debut season.
True, the rule is based a limit of 17 Non home grown players, but the impact is on squad size. If any of the seven homegrown players listed by mebeSajid are sold, their roster spots cannot be filled by non homegrown players. So Arsenal would have to use U21s or buy domestically to fill out the roster. On a team where quality depth is already an issue, this is a potential problem.
He can be, our system just hasn't played to pace at all. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/video/fo...cazette-shows-power-pace-poise-Lyon-goal.html That goal doesn't happen if he's slow. He's not Aubameyang, but he's quick enough to worry defenses.
That is technically incorrect. If you look at my breakdown. we have 2 international spots to work with before anyone is sold, so technically we could sell Welbeck and Chambers and replace them both with internationals. The caveat to that is that we are using existing U21s on the 25-man roster. Considering we already had 4 U21s (AMN, Mavropanos, Nelson & Nketiah) that got minutes at some point this season, thats not a huge deal unless we feel a need to get those guys loaned out. At a minimum, I have a feeling that AMN and possibly Mavropanos will figure into the 1st team this season.
GK is an absolute must-buy. Cech was as bad as any of our defenders last year, and Ospina was not much better. Maybe Emery can organize our defense to be better, but you can't help a 36 year old Cech turn back the clock six years.
I want a new GK but given the budget and other needs (CB, DM, backup RB) I think we could get by if we had to. A better organized D keeps some of those goals from ever happening.
The hate for Wilshere is strong in this thread. If it wasn’t for his injuries, he would’ve been one of the best midfielders out there. Too bad he’s a player made of glass.
I’m still wondering what exactly he does well. He’s not a bad player, but I don’t see anything special at all. Honestly, outside of the Barca games a few years ago and his time in the youth academy, he never really did anything special to me.
He’s decent at carrying the ball from deep and short quick one twos etc But he’s played too far forward Pair him with a dm and an attacking cm he’s fine if coaches to not go forward too much
Wilshere was pretty much a key component of Wengerball alongside Rosicky. He was pretty darn good during 2012-13 season, but unfortunately he turned out to be another Gascoigne. If he wasn’t really “special” then Xavi, Iniesta, Pep Guardiola etc wouldn’t have praised him. His poor attitude and injuries played a key role in his failure to become one of the best midfielders in modern gen.
His touch can be sublime and he can beat players one v one, but he has never shown a particular proclivity for scoring or providing assists and his defensive qualities are suspect. He has more career yellow cards than goals and assists combined.
According to news out of Spain, Lucas may be sticking around. It is being reported that the team has asked him to report for preseason training 7/2 and is claimed that Emery is a fan of him as a player. Thought he played very well for us in limited minutes under Wenger. Not opposed to seeing what he can do under a different manager. Little older than I would like but could be the ST/W type that I would like to see taking Welbeck's minutes.
What is with the hate on Welbeck? Dude runs half the teams in the league ragged, and against the other half we have 2 very good strikers.
That touch might still be there - I don't think so - but the burst he equally needed, to get away from a marker, is long dead. He STILL does not release the ball fast enough as well. Continues to hold onto possession or tries an extra dribble too often. Just not tidy enough with the ball and has physically declined due to injuries.
I'd have nothing against him having a 2nd go with us, but unfortunately his position is already pretty well stocked, no? Too bad we don't seem to have an analogous loanee who's a decent CB or DM.
