LAFC's downtown stadium sets new marker for MLS expansion teams http://www.espn.com/soccer/major-le...adium-sets-new-marker-for-mls-expansion-teams Sunday MLS Scoreboard: Ciman's winner lifts LAFC to late triumph, Villa helps NYCFC hand FC Dallas its first loss https://sbisoccer.com/2018/04/sunda...oks-for-fifth-straight-lafc-opens-new-stadium
Los Angeles FC mark arrival with Hollywood ending to open new stadium https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/apr/30/lafc-first-home-game-seattle-sounders Rocco Commisso offers $500m investment to fund NASL https://www.theguardian.com/football/2018/apr/30/rocco-commisso-nasl-investment-mls It will never die.
I posted a few more quotes from this article in the NASL lawsuit thread; but these two just left me speechless: 1) I think of the rich investors in this country, I’m pretty unique in the sense that, besides the mind that I have, I’m the only one that played soccer.” 2) In one further reply, Commisso expresses surprise that Cordeiro should prioritize the World Cup bid over meeting [with him]." I just don't know what to say.
And, "5th ranked soccer league in television ratings in the country". Not the best argument to make considering that I would assume that LigaMX, EPL and Bundesliga are 3 of the other 4 leagues above MLS.
Why didn’t Commiso invest his $500 million in NASL before it collapsed like a house of cards in the first place?
The inability to put this element of the matter into context is the most confounding to me. The failure to recognize the different levels of monies involved, the different broadcast times, the different pedigrees. To say nothing of the fact that our nation's burgeoning passion for the game is rooted in our historic support for those other leagues, teams, etc. Or has Commisso simply tuned out of European football all together?! Nimrod. Because you have to truly hit rock bottom in order to make the greatest comeback story EVER! Don't some scientists believe the center of the universe is a black hole?
Small correction Bundesliga is a distant 5th behind Liga MX, EPL, MLS, and La Liga so I'm not even sure what Commiso is even talking about? Liga MX- 584,769k Avg TV audience EPL- 383,480k Avg TV audience MLS- 285,285k Avg TV Audience La Liga- 186,938k Avg TV Audience Bundesliga- 59,640 Avg TV Audience NASL ?????
And still another doozy from Rocco... "MLS, and those 23 stupid teams that they have, should not be the only ones given the opportunity to succeed, and that’s the job of the US soccer federation.” Ooohhh yeah, it's not personal at all.
And yet "succeed" they have.......unlike any other pro soccer league in the history of the sport in this country.......especially the North American Soccer League.......twice.
He's just upset because without pro-rel he loses the opportunity to get into MLS without paying a huge expansion fee like everybody else. Essentially he wants to reap the benefits of MLS without having to pay the costs.
He literally sounds like a 21 year old hipster in a Man U jersey who knows nothing about the history of the sport in the United States. Or history of sports in this country in general. WTF does the World Champs or World Series Champs have to do with f#%$*g anything? That has NOTHING to do with the system and EVERYTHING to do with the NFL and MLB being the CLEARLY dominant leagues in their sports. It's like bitching about the AFL final being called the Grand Final even though it's only Australian teams. THEY'RE THE ONLY ONES PLAYING THE GAME YOU IDIOT! Talk about sickening and arrogant. “Just bringing the World Cup and making NFL owners – because a lot of these games are going to be played in NFL stadiums – rich and successful, is not enough. We want to see soccer at all levels succeed. We want to see soccer follow the Fifa rules that made other nations very successful … The sickening and arrogant mentality in America is that we say we’re Champions of the World when we’re playing the Superbowl. When we play the World Series we’re Champions of the World. But you’re paying among yourselves! You’re not playing teams from other countries. There’s this sense that ‘we have to Americanize the sport’. It’s been going on for 40 to 50 years, because ‘Who the hell are these other countries – why do we have to listen to them?’”
I can't wait until the Philadelphia Eagles play against the gridiron football champions of Myanmar, so we can really see who is truly the best in the world!
What I find most amazing about this is that a half a billion dollar investment in American soccer is really not that much in today's MLS. This shows the massive growth of the league over a few short years. I remember being blown away by the Adidas original deal of $100 million. Boy has time changed!
Much longer than "....40 to 50 years...". 50 years ago is only the 1960s. US teams have been "world champions" of various regional sports since the early 20th century.
