utterly disappointing. Salinas on defense is weakest link on an otherwise weak team. looks like another loooong season in SJ.

Too bad this game was on the road. Had we been the home team I’m positive that we could have managed a point.

A disjointed, undisciplined team. All signs point to bad coaching. The quality of the players isn't the best. The effort is good, especially when the game is just about out of reach. It just looks like there is no plan, no rhyme nor reason, and a failure to learn the weaknesses and strengths of the players.

I'd like to give a coach new to the league the benefit of the doubt, but Stahre doesn't look up to the job. I think Stahre and Fioranelli think they are smarter than they actually are, which is always bad in any line of work that has measurable results.

Do they train during the week? Or is it "Show up at the airport on Thursday for the flight to _____" or "Be at Avaya at 5 PM on Saturday."?

We deserve better. The Season Ticket sales don't lie. When the FO announced the Man U friendly, they said there are a limited number (I can't recall the exact number) of Season Passes available which get you Man U at STH prices. They are still trying to sell that allotment. Sad. I know I'm happy I get a $50 seat for that match for $18. I guess most people would rather skip the Quakes entirely.

    Stahre Out.
    Fioranelli Out.

For some reason I kind of knew the Quakes would score two goals when they were 3-0 down. I knew they would end up losing just the same but thought they would pull 2 consolation goals....

It’s only the second game of the Season I’ve managed to watch so I only have limited data points.. but.. it looked like the team does not have a clue on how the coach wants them to play or the coach is clueless. The defense looked awful. Scoring two goals on the road should be enough for at least a point. Can we get Vic back?

If it wasn't for Portland and Seattle having a slow start Quakes would be in last. Only a matter of time until the NW teams get it together.

    Wooden Spoon! Wooden Spoon!

We suck. Stahre actually makes me long for Leitch back as coach. We are utterly clueless under this administration. Jesse you need to fire Stahre Monday. Replace him with Q, I don't care. We are outcoached, underprepared, and overwhelmed every match. We last won two months ago folks.

Fire Stahre. And if Jesse doesn't want to do that, fire Jesse!

    We suck.

The pattern I see is we have a cheap silent crap incompetent owner who is working on a shoe string buget.

Whomever the GM or coach are , the Quakes will not win as long as Fisher is at the helm. At least I don’t see it....

Credit to @JazzyJ for being the first to question Stahre's coaching, back in the preseason. I wasn't ready to form an opinion then, but the first 6 games... have not been good. The best we've looked may have been the first half of the season opener against Minnesota... talk about peaking early! How long a leash he have? Have there been any comments from Jesse recently about Stahre's performance so far? Also what is with his postgame pep talks on the field? I can't imagine the players are too psyched for those...

0.83 PPG puts us even with DC (awful coach in Ben Olsen who has been involved in three of the worst seasons in MLS history, road-heavy schedule as team is opening their new stadium this summer), Philadelphia (awful coach in Jim Curtin, shut out in 4 of their 6 games so far), Portland (new coach like us, road-heavy schedule due to stadium construction)...

It wasn't necessarily that I thought Stahre was a bad coach, but his philosophy / style, at least what I saw in the Häcken games I watched, was the antithesis of the style I wanted to see the team play, and the antithesis of the direction the team was heading in the last half of last year. It was extremely direct, just about the most direct soccer I've ever seen. And a lot of bunkering. To be fair, Stahre has done more high pressing than I thought he would do, but he does bunker at times. But the direct style is there, no real interest in possession.

So I really think that this is all on Jesse. As I've said, he made the wrong moves in the offseason.

We needed some real quality at outside back / wing back to compliment Lima. We didn't get it. I thought maybe they saw something in Qwiberg and he'd be good, but he appears to be more like depth at this point.

We needed some real quality at CB, in particular a player or two with good speed. We did not get that, and you can see the result in terms of how easy it is to put one through our back line.

Rather than meeting those needs, instead we signed YAOAM (Yet Another Outside Attacking Mid) who fits the direct style and who puts players like Hyka and TT on the bench. He's a good player but I think only works well in a direct style, and it was not a really a position of need.

We should have given Leitch a full year, with these improvements to the wide play and defense, to give him a chance to build on some positive things that were developing last year and to try to fix the problems. But instead we got a Euro coach who has the team playing in a completely different way in relation to the direction we were heading in the 2nd half of last year.

After the game against NYCFC, Jesse made a rousing speech to the team, telling them "they don't know how good they are". I think he just thought, after going Euro last year, and having some success, he'd double down on going Euro, and the Quakes would rule MLS! Not so much... It is not nearly that simple. You need to respect and understand MLS, and not just think that you can own the league by bringing in players from "European superior soccer cultures" (my quote, not his, to be fair).

Anyone, as to the game, I actually thought, strangely enough, this was one of the Quakes better games this year. Low bar, I know, but at least in the middle part of the game, the Quakes high press was working pretty well, and I think they had the better run of play. And though they were still out-possessed, it was not by much. It was I think the highest possession number for the Quakes this year.

But Orlando figured out how susceptible we were to the long through ball, and that tipped the balances back towards Orlando. They probably should have had another goal or two, but the Quakes probably should have had a goal or two before Flo's goals. In the end, I think the final score actually wound up being kinda fair, in a very roundabout way. I don't think we'll see an xGD much greater than 1.

I read elsewhere that Stahre thought the team played well in the 1st half. That's the second time he has expressed pleasure with a half in which the other team outplayed and outscored his by two goals (the 2nd half of the NYCFC game being the other). Seriously, this guy is a moron, even beneath the intelligence level of "play harder, not smarter" Kinnear. And if Fioranelli agrees, which he seems to based on the Quakes Axis post NYCFC game pep talk, he's also a 40 watt bulb in a 75 watt (or at least 60 watt) league.

Fisher won't do anything, so we fans are screwed. I don't follow baseball any more, but my impression is that the A's are a mess and so are the Quakes. Now I get why people want promotion and relegation. Teams like SJ, Philadelphia, DC, Colorado, perennial bottom dwellers, bring down the league.

Tonight's game prompted me to look at the Ticketmaster site for the Man U match at Levi's. It looks like it isn't selling, even with the lowest ticket price being $30. F'in pathetic. Maybe it moves to Avaya?

    Stahre Out.
    Fioranelli Out.
    Fisher Out.

    Bobby Warshaw, March 8 2018:
San Jose Earthquakes are MLS's most innovative offense
"In 2018, however, under new head coach Mikael Stahre, we are seeing a new San Jose team. Instead of the straightforward approach of old, the best word to describe them appears to be innovative. The Quakes were the most interesting tactical team in Week 1.
    ...
The Quakes want the same thing everyone else does in the attacking third, but in going about it a different way, they gain an advantage. Innovation can be powerful. And interesting to watch."

    Bobby Warshaw, April 22 2018:
The Lions keep roaring, and all the Saturday action (starts at 8:40)
"I would have always been surprised if it clicked right away for this San Jose team. When you have a new coach who talks the way Mikael Stahre does about really implementing a style and a philosophy, and really a culture change. I mean this was a San Jose organization that played soccer a certain way, and now all of a sudden they're trying to pass, they're trying to play, they're trying to build out of the back. That was never going to come quickly."
