What/When Toronto FC will pay a visit to Estadio Akron in Zapopan, Mexico to take on CD Chivas Guadalajara from Mexico in the second leg of the 2018 Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League final on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at 9:30 pm EDT. TV/Video This match will be shown live on TSN (http://www.tsn.ca/, English) in Canada. Radio/Audio None as of yet
So now the mission is clear: Score two goals. Ideally Chivas would also be held scoreless so as to win in regulation but there is the cushion of allowing them one goal and going to overtime. Far from an ideal situation but also far from impossible.
There is no overtime in the CCL. If the scoreline on Tuesday is 2-1 for TFC, it goes straight to penalties. Winning by 2 goals is not an impossible task. RBNY did beat them 1-0 in Mexico.
One thing I notice in the 1st leg is how the players who were on yellow cards (especially Bradley) played with that in the back of their heads not taking chances going in on 50-50 balls or being over aggressive knowing they could miss the 2nd leg. With that out of the way now I expect player little more physical and take more chances. Much like our other two trips to Mexico we need to take our chances and maybe need a little luck like a own goal or error on Chivas part. We can get early goal like Chivas did we can really put the pressure on them and make things interesting
a fast start is imperative. A lead at half is what will give us belief.... even 1-1 at half isn't horrible, leaving 1 goal to get over 45 minutes. We had the better chances. Everyone says how well Chivas is defensively...we broke them down on 4 or 5 occasions in the box...didn't finish so its not impossible with this team. Would be great if Vasquez could be fit or like 95% and can play. Mavinga too.
No, they lost 1-0. The Sounders beat them 1-0 but that was in Seattle. Chivas hasn't conceded a single goal at home in this tournament, much less two in the same game. That's the nature of the challenge.
Looking like Vazquez is going to be involved in some way, though hopefully only off the bench since I doubt he's match-fit. Even at 50% he's probably an upgrade on Aketxe, who has gotten significantly worse with every game he's played. Other than that, hopefully at least VDW (who's gotten better since his debut) is ready to go. Not sure if Morrow will be ready, and though he struggled at Azteca, I'd be comfortable with Morgan getting the nod again tonight. I expect the same starting 11 as the first leg, but with Zav coming in for Mavinga (another guy who we're really missing)
Chivas wins on penalties. We came close to winning than I thought was possible given the amount of injuries. Nothing to be ashamed of. Time to kick on in the league and win MLS Cup again.
Knew when Delgado missed that sitter in injury time that we were not meant to win, that was a sitter and he blew it over the net. Disappointing to lose in PK as pretty much a crap shoot but hard not to be proud of the effort and result they put in tonight playing in Mexico with a line up with players playing out of the position and others who were clearly still fighting fitness issues.
Commiserations guys. You stood toe-to-toe with everyone you faced, which included the best teams in the tournament. Regardless of the outcome and the frustration, you can be proud of your team.
Chivas allowed only four goals in the whole tournament, 3 of which were scored by TFC We didn't win but I think it's fair to say that MLS can compete with Mex Primera for this trophy. It may or may not be us, but an MLS team will be winning it soon.
Tough loss, TFC. Amazing run though! Your team and coach are the class of the league, which I hate to admit, since I'm an ATL fan. Hold your heads up!
I was sincerely gutted for you guys. To lose is one thing but to lose on penalties after having won in regular time is extra harsh. I was just hoping that you guys could just get one more in before the whistle and Giovinco was just inches away from doing just that for you all. I feel bad for your keeper. He was excellent all game so to lose like that sucks. Sadly I knew Bradley was going to blow that shot the minute he stepped up it. His legs were through at minute 70. He spent the rest of the game turning the ball over and getting beat for the ball from that minute onward. Stay strong. Your team has what it takes to contend for this again and actually win so long as your ownership keeps the team together come contract time.
We were a better side. Penalties i knew we were screwed...we are not confident with them. Delgado had it on his foot and that miss i knew as well it was done with only a sliver of hope on the penalty spot. Tough but i am very proud of this team and how well they competed. MLS cannot compete with Lige MX...but TFC can.
