Naw, he wouldn't - wait, Mexico play South Korea 2nd?

...yeah, he would. :D Although hopefully the scare he got from New Zealand in the Confed Cup taught him something...

Sweden's performance against Chile was ok, although it becomes glaringly obvious how lacking our ability to pass the ball is in comparison. This has always been a weak point for us, and I expect Mexico to be vastly superior to us in that aspect too.

Tactically, we did fine. I mean, the first Chilean goal by Vidal was world class and impossible to foresee/prevent. Our equalizer was beautiful, especially the set-up, but I just wish we could create chances like that on a more regular basis. Otherwise, we'll always depend on opposition mistakes or pure luck.

We're up against Romania tonight (not sure why, shouldn't we be playing against Japan or something instead?) and our coach will let those who didn't start on Saturday start today. I think that's fair, and it gives the current subs a chance of showing their worth.

So after seeing everyone play during the international break, did that change anyone's predictions about the group? For me, I'm still going with Germany in first and Mexico in second to advance.

Do not be fooled by this result, Croatia missed a good chunk of opportunities, Mexico looked like absolute shit, per usual our coach was outdone by the other guy (no matter what, Osorio finds new ways to remain an absolute idiot) and we picked up a few bad injuries. ********.

Germany will win it's three games easily, who's next remains in the air. Not convinced by any of the other three teams.

Last I heard he'll be out from 4 weeks to six months. It sucks even more because he was Europe bound. After this, he'll never leave ********ing Liga MX.

I wouldn't overrate or rule out Germany but this is going to be a close clash between the powerful nations. Germany can win the cup again but so can any of the other top teams. I also think a lot of people are sleeping on Uruguay.

Really, though? Germany's WC record speaks for itself...hell, the last time they crashed out of the WC in the first round was 1938.

It might be worth remembering that Germany did not "cruise" through WC 2014 but actually apart from Portugal and Brazil(they basically spontaneously self-imploded) only managed to barely scratch by:

    2:2 vs Ghana
    1:0 vs USA
    2-1 vs Algeria
    1:0 France
    1:0 vs Argentina

But apart from that Germany like many other teams played in subtropic hot climate. Russia can be hot in summer too. Or it wont. We dont know. But there will be teams faring well in this climate and others wont.

Germany will play Sweden in Sochi which offers the only guaranteed cooling effect with the Black sea.

I can't see Germany ending up like France, Italy or Spain. They are far more consistent and along with Brazil always make it far. Germany had made the quarterfinals at every World Cup since 1954.

I don't think the Germans will drop out in the group stages but I can see them crashing out in the semis or win the whole thing.

I agree. Such a debacle will never happen to Germany. They constantly experiment with new players and tactics to keep on top of the game.

Historically, Germany doesn't repeat championships, though. And the last 2 times they came to the world cup as defending champions, they crashed out in the quarterfinals. I wonder if that trend will continue...

I remember for USA '94 they were the team to beat, which made Bulgaria's shock win against them that much more amazing.

I have said it for a while, and though it comes off as foolish.. just because well, you know? its Germany.. i dont see them having an easy time qualifying through this group. It is very tricky with talented teams who will want to prove themselves against the 'world champs'

World champs always have targets on their backs, thats why its difficult to repeat as champions.. and when teams do, it is extremely impressive.
