Peters is basically a right wing crank with a lot of bad ideas, but he seems sincere in his cranky opinions. It must have been disillusioning for him to discover (via the Trump era) how few other Fox News people actually believed what they were saying when they attacked Obama for not being tough enough or patriotic enough.

Just as Trump's sexual misconduct has shown that most of the loudest "family values" advocates are phonies, Trump's affection for Putin has demonstrated that most of those in politics and media who loudly proclaim their patriotism are equally phony.
