The comments were a bit strange, maybe in part because of a lack of political correctness and in part for not being a native speaker but they were also translated and sometimes condensed for the English speaking market. He shouldn't have worded it that way but what the coach criticized was that Klinsmann's lack of a serious, focused approach prevents him from performing consistently well in the training sessions. The lack of charisma and personality was meant in terms of controlling your box against opponents, making decisions fast and with confidence and communicating with your defense/teammates which are all important attributes.

In short, the positive remarks were that they worked on his physical weaknesses and that they don't see the basic tools/skills as his problem areas but he needs to improve his attitude and presence on the field which they admit can take time.

Particularly bizarre. Hardwork is the one thing we are known for.

We are different. Freddy, Szetella, EJ, Buddle and Santino are also we.
On another look that's a scary list. So much talent wasted.

I'm referring to the stereotype of the American player, not suggesting there are no exceptions.

Well there's this American sunnyboy surfer-boy stereotype in Germany.
I'm just happy it was a Hungarian coach saying that rediculous sentence, German superiority complex and all that...

it is a bit harsh of him saying "he has too much American in him". Well, he is American. It's kinda like the coach is lashing him for not being German enough or not receptive to German style.

Imagine the uproar if he said this about say a Greek player or even an African player.

Someone from his front office should have told him to STHU with such remarks since now they'll have a tough time selling Hertha tricots to Americans. This is also why Hertha has never won anything, they are a trashy club.

I imagine he will get a bit of a telling to from the club's higher ups. He may have meant well, but such words can really turn people off.

We’d like to hope so at least. It’s not really a secret that Europeans have had this type of attitude toward Americans for a long time. Hertha isn’t exactly known for bringing in lots of Americans, especially if you consider that Brooks grew up in Germany. So it wouldn’t be a surprise if most of the club still had that archaic type of thinking.

Hope word of his comments get around to all of our prospects who are considering Germany. The last thing we need is our kids going over to a team that discriminates against Americans

People get what they deserve. Ever heard those Germans trashing McKennie? No, because he is a great kid. And this one was an entitled piece of shit 4 years ago, and still probably is.

This is not about discriminating Americans but pushing values and skills that make German keepers the best in the world. When was the last time Germany didnt have 2-3 world class keepers available? Young Ter Stegen failed big time against the US and is now starter at Barca cause German goalkeeping school knows what you need to prevail on the international stage. I think you can see this only in a positive way

Sure, but one can also find a bit of a hard edge to his comments. Especially saying he wasn't German enough. By what did he mean with that?
