Pretty exciting stuff for these guys and there is potential there, but it is still potential that (if ever realized) could be 1, or 2, full seasons away...for a fan base that is tired of waiting already.
If I can put on my optimism hat for a minute ... Rumors are that team is gunning for one of the top picks in the draft. LAFC - as of the writing of this post - have the #1 overall and just traded for DCU's #3 overall. Team has signed a couple homegrowns to mediocre fanfare. They will let today's draftees have their spotlight. Perhaps the earliest we hear of any "blockbuster" acquisition is this afternoon/evening, but there's always the concern that it'll get lost in the end-of-week media blackhole ... I'd wager IF there is a signing to come, we'll hear about it on Monday. Preseason commences on that day with physicals & evaluations, so starting Tuesday we can begin to look forward to Name the Trialist™.
This just got posted on the Union’s subreddit. Anyone know of him? 954367863090970624 is not a valid tweet id Translation: Cameroon defender Olivier Mbaizo is expected to commit 2 years in the coming days with Philadelphia Union, a Major League Soccer (MLS) club.
Ah, Name the Trialist. They should really do a retrospective of top trialists identified through grainy footage. I can name Ilsinho, Onyewu, and M'bohli right off the top of my head as guys that we were like "are they on the team?" weeks before there was any actual announcement.
What is going on with the defender rumours? Do they not believe in Trusty/Yaro/Marquez for the other spot? Najem isn't the answer at CAM. Why isn't that the focus?
Best I can tell is that he's 20, still plays in Cameroon, played a couple games for Union Douala, and if you type "Olivier Mb" into your google bar he's the second thing that pops up.
He's a "defender". Anyone know what flavor of defender? If he's a left back, that changes my degree of give a damn. Probably a center back.
You know who else had potential? Mwanga Okugo McInerny Pfeffer McLaughlin Hernandez Brown Farfan Farfan Fernandes Hoffman Martinez Ribeiro Catic Okai
Nothing...he's 20 and plays for Union Douala in Cameroon and has only played for the U20s so he wouldn't be on the national team in FIFA. A Wikipedia article on him in French makes it sound like he's a center back but I haven't found his height anywhere, and another site is claiming he's a fullback https://cs.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olivier_Mbaissidara_Mbaizo http://www.footballdatabase.eu/football.joueurs.olivier.mbaissidara.289486.en.html We were linked this morning to another African defender Vincent Atinga. With our lack of a scouting network, it's interesting to me that we've been linked to two players in West Africa seemingly out of the blue Another CB for whom @PhilaUnion had interest. https://t.co/CjpYFJH4ZX— Union Rumors (@UnionRumors) January 19, 2018
The #2 pick and #4 pick were both traded for 200k in allocation money. Honestly wish we'd have traded up. That seems pretty cheap, especially if you're getting a GA player.
He was the most MLS ready player in that year's draft and arguably one of the best players in college soccer that year https://www.mlssoccer.com/post/2013/01/18/mls-superdraft-union-take-shot-naia-star-okai
I'm pretty sure when they waived Okai and Hackworth's explanation was "Well, did you really think I was going to say the guy we drafted wasn't that good?" was the moment I started figuring out who the Union really were.
So it sounds like we have six CBs on the roster now for folks keeping track at home. I hope they roll out a six-man back line with a sweeper in front just to piss off teams like Atlanta and Toronto.
Important to note. Accam has a green card so he doesn't hit the international cap we have an issue with.
