Doubt it- problem is getting him registered before the window closes, and seems that cannot happen because of his birthday.
sure I have, I coached HS varsity for 6 years. Josh is pretty thickly muscled - I'm not doubting his age (we only do that for players born in Africa here) - he's just clearly (to me) more physically mature than his peers.
Kicker magazine quotes Werder head coach Florian Kohfeldt: “He moves very well, makes plays well and just has an intuitively good striker instincts.”
Like I said, this kid has got it. I'm not too worried about him just playing friendlies and training with the first team. By the time August comes around, I think he'll be in a situation where he is a legitimate option for the first team.
If Werder Bremen are relegated, will it be a disappointing move for Sargent or will it open up a quicker path to the first team? I’m worried this turns into a bad move for him if he’s stuck on a 2 BL team.
I've been thinking about this too. I'm telling myself that he's young enough and good enough that it won't matter. If they're relegated, he'll have a very good chance of breaking into the first team, and if he's as good as we think, he'll have a good season, either helping them bounce back up or getting transfer interest from Bundesliga teams. Wood was around 23 (right?) when he had has big goal scoring season in the 2nd B. and got the transfer to Hamburg, so if Sargent does something similar as an 18-year-old, I'm sure other teams will notice.
Ugh what the heck I thought this guy had a chance with the first team this season. If he was already 18 and registered Feb 20th as a free agent would he be eligible?
There's nothing disappointing about beginning a pro career as an 18yo in the 2 Bundesliga. It might even have its advantages relative to starting out in the first division. At 18yo in literally his first pro season, he wouldn't be stuck there.
It's disappointing because he's good enough to play for the first team right now and probably would be if not for the eligibility rule. So he'd be slumming it for a year and a half at least relative to what in all likelihood he's already capable of. I'm optimistic they stay up though because they are in form and have some quality in their lineup. Who knows if Sargent has a release clause too if they get relegated. He should have that option considering he chose them over a host of suitors.
U19 matches are fine. He just can’t play in competitive matches w/ first team b/c of labor law re non-EU minors— Talking Fussball (@talkingfussball) January 19, 2018
There's nothing factual about this statement. It's entirely conjecture. I've grown into as big of a Sargent fan as anyone, and I get that there have been a couple of sexy seconds of video and line or two of quotes circulating the past 48 hours, but Sargent is a yet to be 18yo who's never played a professional game at any level. He's not good enough for the Bundesliga or the Bremen first team based on a stellar youth international career or observations of him competing against youth players. I don't think there should be anything disappointing about the prospect of him taking his first step into the pro game in the 2 Bundesliga. Need to see him play against adults before he's labeled too good for that level i.e. slumming it.
I put a qualifier in there and it's conjecture by the people deciding whether he'd play for the 1st team or not seemingly. Couldn't be much more effusive in their praise. It seems many are bigger Josh Sargent fans than you (not that it should be a competition, just saying), including his own coaches and teammates. He was arguably the best player playing up a few years against young men in the u-20 World Cup and I'm confident he'd succeed against older men in the Bundesliga (as he's doing in practices) by a similar token. Kid's got it. Don't worry be happy.
His salary will probably drop significantly, so for Sargent himself it will probably be a pretty big disappointment.
I'm very happy, especially when it comes to Sargent's pro prospects. Your post doesn't take away from anything I've said though. He's not too good for the 2 Bundesliga based on a youth career.
More 1st team training for young Mr. Sargent: 👀 We spy a certain @joshsargent out there training with the first team 🇺🇸 #werder pic.twitter.com/qrbJKUZBFE— SV Werder Bremen EN (@werderbremen_en) January 24, 2018
We love seeing @joshsargent training with the first team, but after all he is the new boy 😉 #werder 🇺🇸 pic.twitter.com/FHGn3doeph— SV Werder Bremen EN (@werderbremen_en) January 25, 2018
I believe you’re correct. It’s my understanding that now that the season has resumed, he is ineligible to play in any official first team or Bremen II matches until the start of next season. Only training and friendlies. I honestly don’t know about his eligibility for the U19s.
