A qualification tournament for the 2018 Dallas Cup was completed this weekend. Its called the Bobby Rhine invitational. I won't go thru all of the results, but the teams that won were mostly from Texas (FCD, Solar, Texans, Dallas Rush, etc.) and Mexico (Tigres, etc.)

But this brought a little tear to my eye................

Folks might be interested in the results of the tournament from the U16 division. The champion was Solar, in a division that included FCD affilaites, Texans, Liverpool (the club team that Keaton Parks played for), The Tigres affiliate in Garland, AYSES (a good club team in DFW we don't talk about), etc.

Little Rhine is a good story. Also thanks for the Keaton info. I wondered where he'd played. Seems that Liverpool team has an interesting history evolving several times from other clubs - I think. Bet there's lots of similar stories across the country. The history of each areas club teams is an interesting story in it's own right let alone their alumni.

Keaton was on the youth team of the Liverpool Warriors of the NPSL for a brief period. They were based in Plano. The NPSL team closed shop in 2017, but the youth academy continues..............

I believe Keaton's coach on that Liverpool team was Armando Palaez, Sr. If that name rings a bell with folks its because his son, Armando Palaez, Jr. also has appeared in this forum as a youth yanks abroad. I believe, but am not positive, that he's also at Benfica.

Here's a pic of Armando Jr., Keaton, and US U17 dos Santos watching the recent US versus Portugal game.

Actually Sr rings a bell as a former Dallas Burn Assistant coach. So many kids of players and coaches starting to show up in big numbers around the country.

    Interesting development here:

USL Academy teams from the Charleston Battery, OKC Energy FC, Orange County SC, Pittsburgh Riverhounds, Rio Grande Valley FC, Saint Louis FC and San Antonio FC will all compete at the 2018 Dr Pepper Dallas Cup, with the 39th edition of the tournament set to be held between March 25 and April 1, 2018, in Frisco, Texas.

No word on what age levels will be participating.

Interesting. Haven't seen that before. The Dallas Cup sets aside a certain percentage of slots to Texas teams, another percentage for out-of-state teams, and another percentage to foreign teams. So we'll see. They won't be in the Supergroup. I'd imagine the supergroup may contain two teams from Texas: The defending DA champs Houston Texans, and the defending Dallas Cup champs FCD. FCD could field Ferreira, Reynolds, and Pomykol AGAIN in the Dallas Cup :)..................

I hope we don't see it but with dec birthdays, Pomykol has 2 and Ferreira has 3 more possible super groups to play in.

We'll see. We know FCD takes this competition very seriously. Probably more seriously than the DA playoffs! The level of competition is higher than the DA playoffs. In fact I would like MLS teams to play in more of these types of international tournaments and less DA games, but that's just me.

By the way, here's how time flies. Jonathan Gonzalez played for Monterrey in the Dallas Cup last season, and now he's a serious USMNT candidate one year later. He started the Championship game against FCD. Its not "bad" that a youngster like Ferreira (who is still only16 after all) takes part in this event.

I don't know if Jonathan was still in the 'ole midfield when the championship goal was scored. :)!!!!!!!

Agree with you on emphasis on dallas cup. By saying hope they don't play, it's because they are too important to the first team by then. Gonzalez is a top top talent, but FCD midfield had the better play both games. So what does that say about FCD?

Its funny. The Euro clubs that visit play their best 18 year olds in the competition and nobody thinks twice. Monterrey played Jonathan Gonzalez in the Dallas Cup in 2017. Everton just had a whole bunch of debuts from kids that played in the Dallas Cup over the last two years. When its suggested that FCD play kids that are currently 16-17, people ask "what's the point of that?" The point is that the level of competition is REALLY high in the Supergroup. So unless is a kid is starting an MLS first team game during those weeks, I'm happy for them to play in the Dallas Cup.

Anyway, I know the guy who writes the Dallas Cup twitter feed posts on these boards. I like it when he posts these kinds of things..............

I kinow we talk about DFW soccer a bit on these boards, but I don't ever mention that Drew Moor is also from DFW. Played his youth soccer for Solar, and of course has now won multiple MLS Cups. Would start in the middle of our DFW backline with Omar Gonzalez.

Like to see some Euro continental clubs ie German, Itialian, French etc. Schalke would be good since they are using so many young Americans .

They typically do have a Spanish team as they do this time.

Historically the Dallas Cup organizers have had that England connection................Gordon Jago. So there are always a couple of English teams. Over the years the tournament has just built up a relationship with certain clubs that repeat over and over again. Which is fine...............
