    1997-98 Serie A [Round 16]
    18 January, 1998
    Bologna 1-3 Juventus
    Stadio Renato dall'Ara: 9,626 spectators
    Referee: Bazzoli

Juve completely dominated this match. Inzaghi put them up 2-0 in the first 20 minutes, and a stunning free-kick from Del Piero in the second half guaranteed the victory. Bologna scored in the 90th minute as a consolation.

Zidane was very good. He was excellent in the offensive phases of the match, and the trio of Zidane-Del Piero-Inzaghi worked wonders. Zidane won the free kick which led to Del Piero's free-kick goal. He was supposed to be marked by Magoni, but it did not work as Magoni struggled to keep up all match.

The 3-4-1-2 is working its magic. La Gazzetta stated that the formation allowed the 4 'warriors' in midfield to do much of the work, allowing Zidane to focus mostly on the offensive side of play. And since Zidane has fewer responsibilities, he can offer more support to both Inzaghi and Del Piero who are benefiting greatly from it.

Ale and Pippo tied a Juventus record: most goals scored by a duo by the 16th round. So far, they have 21 goals combined. They tied the record of Platini and Rossi, who scored 21 goals combined by the 16th round in 1984.

Just to come back to this topic with an interesting fact that I noticed and might not have been mentioned - Platini is said to have suggested Zidane be moved into the more advanced 'number 10' role and Lippi took the advice on board apparently.

The 4-4-2 was quite common at that time to say the least of course. To use a Forest example again from a season or few before that time, David Phillips played as a partner in a 4-4-2 to Lars Bohinen but actually he did hold back more like an anchor midfielder (like John McGovern had done when Forest had their biggest successes) and Bohinen was sort of half box to box CM and half AM (a role that ought to suit Zidane ok if not as well as being free). France had used Zidane in the middle of a 4-4-2 previously too before that was changed in I think 1997. Platini's comments (I'll find the source now if I can) seem to almost equate Zidane's role early at Juve more with a sort of Pirlo or Redondo role in some ways (so not with the freedom to run forwards off the ball) but mainly I think he was saying he should be freed from so much running back towards his own goal to help out defensively which a CM in a 4-4-2 has to do of course to some extent even if he has a more defensive partner.

Yes, here is what I read:
    http://backpagefootball.com/zinedine-zidane-the-flawed-genius/30147/
"However, it was Platini who kick-started Zidane’s career in Turin after giving a newspaper interview in 1996 stating that the slow-starting Zidane would explode into life if he was deployed in the number ten role, compared to the limited deep-lying role Lippi had initially positioned him in.
Influenced, Lippi redeployed Zidane and it led to a solid 1996/1997 campaign for the Frenchman: scoring 7 goals in 41 games. The 1996/1997 season served as vindication for Lippi, who bravely rebuilt the successful 1996 Champions League winning side and they greatly impressed in Europe"

    Welcome back.

In case you are searching for a concrete example of Zidane playing in that withdrawn role, its the 1-6 win vs Milan at the San Siro during the 1996/97 season where Zidane most famously played the Redondo (CM anchor) role. Bugs has covered it in this thread, here's the post - http://forums.bigsoccer.com/threads/zinedine-zidane-review-1996-2006.2006080/page-2#post-30525516
Regarding the tidbit about Platini's words influencing a change in role for Zidane, I think it is also mentioned by the La Equipe (or France Football) journalist being interviewed in Zidane's 'Football's Greatest' episode (video should still be on youtube). At least that is where I first heard about it, although I don't recollect Lippi's name being mentioned.

Thanks - yeah now you mention it I remember when I had a look at his play vs AC Milan that it wasn't so impressive as I might have expected (wheras the Ajax game as you say is moreso than I'd have expected/recalled when watching that and having more freedom to roam can be a factor in that although his own touches being generally great moreso on one day than another can be a factor too) and he was contributing with tackles etc too in the middle of the pitch.

Yeah, I've watched all the Footballs Greatest episodes so maybe that fact passed me over or left my mind. I suppose the interesting way it's written in that article and the suggestion Lippi took the info on board (rather than it just being Platini's opinion) catches the attention more.

    1997-98 Serie A [Round 17]
    25 January, 1998
    Juventus 3-1 Atalanta
    Stadio delle Alpi: 2,610 spectators
    Referee: Bolognino

Just two days before this match, Zidane spoke about his lack of goalscoring to the press. He was reminded that it has been 2 months since he last scored a goal, and Zidane replied by saying that he would always like to score more, but he just can't. Zidane says that goals just keep evading him. What do you think would happen in the next match...?

The next match against Atalanta, Zidane scored two decisive goals to give Juve the win. Arguably his best performance of the season at this point and a performance which generated a lot of praise from the media. Zidane rarely scored goals, let alone braces, so this is certainly a keepsake!

No problem, and yeah that's a good idea that would allow us to see the exact interview (although because the newspaper isn't named I guess it could be tricky but good luck - I'm thinking it would be in an Italian paper but I suppose a French one would be possible even though it's less likely Lippi would be made aware of it in that case).

Welcome back. I thought you had left for other reasons, but I'm glad that you've returned, as your thread was (and hopefully will remain) excellent.

Having said that, and off-topic, I was wondering if you could help me find some information on Andrea Pirlo. I'm not much of a Milan fan, but I've heard multiple times that Pirlo was somewhat "untouchable" relative to his position, between 2004 and 2007, and I'd like to know if you have any idea of where I could find match ratings for Milan players between 2004 and 2007. The idea is to find Pirlo's best performances, and then try to buy dvd copies of said performances. I'd like to make a youtube video of 26 to 27 year old Pirlo, but I'd like to cherry pick his better performance to save me the expenses of buying matches that won't offer much.

Any info on the matter is appreciated. And I offer a sincere apology in advance for the off-topic post.

    1997-98 Serie A [Round 18]
    1 February, 1998
    Lecce 0-2 Juventus
Stadio Via del Mare: 6,671 spectators
    Referee: Collina

Juve dominated the match, which was characterised by poor pitch conditions. The win was marred by a serious injury to Ciro Ferrara who would miss the rest of the season. Remarkably, there were 67 committed fouls by both teams this match -- 31 from Lecce, 36 from Juve -- a record amount.

Zidane had a poor match. He was terrible in the first half but managed to pick up his play late in the second. He had an excellent pass to Pippo Inzaghi which should have resulted in a goal, but the shot was saved. Zidane was not involved in any of the goals. He was substituted for Tacchinardi.

    8 February, 1998
    Juventus 3-1 Roma
    Stadio delle Alpi: 7,266 spectators
    Referee: Messina

Controversy, very early in the match. Roma should have had a penalty, but Messina did not give it. Messina had a very poor refereeing display all throughout the match. Juventus pulled out a hard-fought victory regardless, for their fifth straight win.

Zidane scored the opening goal in the 45th minute. His entire performance was excellent, and La Gazzetta described him as being omnipresent. Although he did not assist the other goals, Zidane was clearly implicated in many of the attacks that Juventus created. La Stampa noted that it was a whole different kind of showing after Zidane struggled against Lecce a week earlier. Zidane was regarded as the man of the match, this time. And as a small note, a juventino died of a heart-attack as he celebrated Zidane’s goal. :(

Why didn't you continue this thread.

I really want to know better the Zidane's years at Spain and trying understand if he was that really good at Real Madrid (I my honest opinion, he is vastly overrated).

Does anybody here have ratings or best XI of La Liga between 2001-2006? I'm looking for more references, since that the best XI available in http://linguasport.com/futbol/nacional/liga/liga.htm is not enough for me.

I know that he was named to ESM of the year, UEFA Team of the year and FIFAPro World XI some times between 2001-2006 but it becomes doubtfull since that, according to the link above, he was only named to the best XI just once.

    11 February, 1998
    Brescia 1-1 Juventus
    Stadio delle Alpi: 25,158 spectators
    Referee: Bettin

Given some of the absences for Juve, Lippi had to go to a 3-4-1-2 formation, with Zidane given free reign to go where he wants, working behind Del Piero and Pippo. Brescia looked to counter this with Diana, a holding midfielder who had the job of man-marking Zidane.

It appears that the match began at a frenetic pace, with several early chances. La Gazzetta described Zidane as somewhat anonymous in the first half, but grew into the game. Zidane had a wonderful chance he created for himself in the second half minute, but he was robbed of a goal by Emanuele Filippini’s goal-line intervention.

Paolo Ferrario, Brescia manager, gave great praise to Diana after the match: “I want to compliment Diana, to whom I entrusted with a special task -- the marking of Zidane, a task he did very well.

Zidane was chosen after the match for a doping test.

Hoping to finish 1997-98 Serie A this weekend. Zidane played 12 more matches in the league, so it should be doable for me. Sorry for abandoning this project for a few years ... thankfully La Stampa and La Gazzeta's archives are still free :inlove:

How cool of a graphic is this? The two best striker duos in the league -- Del Piero and Pippo Inzaghi, Montella and Beppe Signori -- go up against each other in a big match, with Juventus in 1st place and Sampdoria in 7th place; who would win?

The title of La Stampa's February 16 match report: "Juve pulls out a machine gun attack". An apt summary, considering that Inzaghi and Del Piero tore Sampdoria apart. 6 wins in a row for Juventus at home, scoring at least twice in every game!

La Stampa noted that Zidane was less lucid than usual; given that Lippi stuck with the 3-4-1-2, Zidane's role was to commute between midfield and attack. He had a couple of bad moments in the first half, when his selfishness led to bad decision-making in the 24' and 29' where he made poor choices. Overall, it was a fairly standard performance, as he was substituted in the second half for Fonseca, who scored an absolute rocket.

    22 February, 1998
    Fiorentina 3-0 Juventus
    Stadio Artemio Franchi: 13,080 spectators
    Referee: Cesari

Losing by three goals, this was Juventus' worst loss of 1997-98. It looks like this loss was entirely on Marcello Lippi, who tinkered a bit too much. Juventus played a 4-3-2-1, a tactic they had never used in the season, and it did not work at all. In fact, this tactic was exploited to perfection by Fiorentina's midfielders -- Rui Costa, Luis Oliveira, Domenico Morfeo.

La Stampa noted that Zidane and Del Piero had very poor performances in the first half, but can you really blame them? Lippi left Inzaghi on the bench, which meant that Del Piero was the #9 and Zidane pushed to the left. Replacing Inzaghi with Pecchia was not a good decision either, as Pecchia was the worst player on the pitch. Inzaghi was brought on to start the second half, and this helped make Zidane and the rest of the team play better in the second half, but it was too late.

    Juventus 1-0 Bari

    Referee: De Santis

Losing 0-3 the last game was bad. So, Juventus decided to do the exact opposite. Bari played 90 minutes without a single shot on goal, with Juventus entirely in control.

Zidane had an amazing performance against Bari, creating three clear chances for Inzaghi who was unable to score any of them. He controlled the midfield, with La Stampa noting that Zidane "almost as if he wanted to respond to those who accuse him of giving his best only in the national team". Bari couldn't stop him; the coach first got Sordo to man-mark him, and then subbed him off early in the second half as it wasn't working. The coach then got De Ascentis to man-mark Zidane, which led to a De Ascentis red card in the 60th minute. Tough time.

Dull is the best way to describe this match, as Juventus controlled the match through their defence. With no shots on goal in the first half, the match played out very slowly as neither team wanted to lose.

Lippi decided to play Zidane differently, instructing him to play wide on the pitch. This played a part, as Juventus struggled to keep possession of the ball throughout the first half. Lippi's tactical decisions looked to be in response to Oliver Bierhoff's offensive threat; as he said after the game, "Udinese are an excellent team but 80% of their plays look for Bierhoff, who is a great player in his own right. Eliminating him is unthinkable; limiting him, as we managed to do with Montero and Iuliano, was important". By playing Zidane and Del Piero very high up the pitch as wingers, the goal was to pin Udinese's fullbacks backwards to limit the crosses to the towering Bierhoff. Zidane ended the match with a minor injury.

    Zidane, everything and more

This article in La Gazzetta talks about Zidane's goalscoring improvement this season. He has been playing well this season, scoring goals, making assists, tackles, and chances, but it's a pity that he doesn't score more often.

It's been a month since Zidane's last league goal, which was his 6th goal in Serie A this season -- already beating last season's total of 5. Zidane has always viewed scoring and creating goals the same value, stating on one occasion: "When I find the ball between my feet, the first thought that crosses my mind is to give it to a teammate, not to shoot at goal."

What a pity! Zidane has remarkable shooting power and accuracy, but he just doesn't have the goal scoring instinct. He doesn't see the goal, and above all, he doesn't look for it as often as he should. Given this behaviour, it is understandable why Zidane will hardly be able to become a Platini-style scorer.

Fun fact: when Zidane scores, Juventus wins 90% of the time.

    Juventus 2-2 Napoli

Juventus had a more important match on their mind on this day, as they lost concentration twice and allowed Napoli to equalize both times. The match in question? The Champions League quarter-final second leg against Dynamo Kyiv...a big one.

It was an average match for basically every player except Del Piero, who was the star of the day. Zidane in particular had a non-descript performance, eventually being substituted at halftime. Lippi was furious with the team after this game, complaining that they played "as if it was a Thursday training session".

    Parma 2-2 Juventus
    Stadio Ennio Tardini: 11,204 spectators
    Referee: Boggi
A tougher match for Juve, going up against 6th place Parma with world-renowned players Enrico Chiesa, Lilian Thuram, Fabio Cannavaro, and Gigi Buffon. It's important to note that only four days earlier, Juventus were playing a CL quarterfinal in Ukraine, so the travel must've fatigued the players.

Parma started the match excellently, with 2 goals in the first half. But some changes for Lippi at halftime had Juve roaring back, and the match finished a 2-2 draw. After Zidane's world class performance against Kyiv, his performance level dropped as he only played 57 minutes before being substituted. In fact, La Stampa made light of Zidane's inconsistency, stating "one thinks that Zizou is always like the one who played in Kyiv, but instead he is a roller coaster". La Gazzetta were a bit kinder, mentioning the fatigue and that Zidane was nursing a small injury.
