Cary, N.C. — Eight years ago this month, the owners of the Carolina RailHawks were among six disgruntled participants in the United Soccer Leagues top division, then called USL-1, who announced they were leaving to form a new second division professional soccer league. That upstart endeavor became the North American Soccer League, named after the iconic soccer league of the 1970s and 1980s.

Today, the North Carolina FC, the RailHawks’ soccer successor, announced it is leaving the NASL to return to the USL. Carolina was the last of those original six breakaway clubs remaining in the NASL.

Well the Railhawks have a loooong history with Charleston and Richmond and Charlotte and Raleigh are always rivals. Nashville is just a large city in a neighboring state.

USSF should just wait two weeks. There won't be an NASL left to have any interests to represent. Not that they deserve any representation at this point since they can't guarantee they're even playing next year as it is.

I think NCFC made the right choice even if they never make it to MLS. They have so many more rivals now, which could improve attendance and cut travel costs. It is a good position to be in at this point.

This map is amazing. Surprising how many states have 2 teams or more = CA,NV,OK,TX,MO,NC,PA
Drop MLS on top of this and suddenly you have 55 "professional" level teams. Never would have thought this day would come. Yes I know there are a few weak links, but I think USL will sort this out.

In '19 you get to add Tennessee to the list of 2 team states for a year lol and 3 new states in general with the new Chicago, Birmingham and Hartford teams.

And if East Bay comes on, a 5th team in CA, unless SAC has jumped to MLS by then.
Then if Rochester comes back, add NY as a 2 team state
Wasn't there also interest in Albuquerque & Baltimore at one time?

Yes Albuquerque has been one of many PDL teams to express the desire to move up. In FFTs interview with the USL president he said that they are looking to cap the league in '20 and focus on Div 3. That may be a better place for some of those teams to jump.

NASL was a sinking ship. NCFC is a well run team that I do believe will be in MLS someday. I’m more excited for this year than any other and I’m definitely going to try to make their game against Atlanta 2, should be a fun one.
