#NASL announces move to international calendar: https://t.co/bI8vDusHYt pic.twitter.com/yYlVfy5K3b— NASL (@naslofficial) January 8, 2018 Morons. In many ways.
Get your popcorn ready folks!!! It's going to get real interesting (well at least I hope so). P.S This is so dumb that its comical. I realize the Cosmos are the only current northern team but if they add the rumored NPSL teams, I believe Detroit and Boston would be added as well.
Yup. You know, the one everyone follows. And by that I mean European leagues that are shown regularly on major cable channels. Also, this: #NASL calendar change screams time-buying and attention-grabbing, but with very little evidence to back this up as a good decision. The NASL players and coaches I’ve spoken with are incredibly opposed.— Jeff Rueter (@jeffrueter) January 8, 2018
Does this really represent a calendar change? Or are we talking just a rebranding of when the season starts/ends. Last season the spring season was from end of March to the end of June, while the Fall season ran from beginning of August to the end of October with the playoffs in the beginning of November. They could very easily just move the start of the spring season to early March, the playoffs to the end of June, and be done with it. That keeps them out of the winter months for the most part, while allowing themselves to claim the have a fall-Spring calendar.
So one of the teams the NASL was banking on to help keep it's D2 status was, in all actuality, a year away from taking the field. mmmmmmkay. But hey, there's always California United.
Spin, nothing more. They can’t play this spring, so they’re cancelling Spring ‘18 and saying the season starts Fall ‘18. Not that it matters with maybe 5 teams left...
“Waiting until 2019 also allows 1904 FC to keep all league options alive, including those like the USL that play a spring-to-fall schedule.” Something tells me given the rumors of 1904 having peace talks with USL’s leadership that this line is key. They’re just not ready to field a USL based team on such short notice for ‘18 so they’re stalling until they can come to an accord to also jump ship.
Wynalda is being financed by an NASL owner and suddenly, the NASL is moving to an "international calendar", just like Wynalda wants. Who's pulling the strings here?
I think this is the situation: Definites Cosmos Miami Probables Jacksonville California United Possible San Diego (more probably 2019) On Life Support Puerto Rico
I’m shocked, shocked I say. #NASL calendar change screams time-buying and attention-grabbing, but with very little evidence to back this up as a good decision. The NASL players and coaches I’ve spoken with are incredibly opposed.— Jeff Rueter (@jeffrueter) January 8, 2018
Slight updates for you given that Cal United has been AWOL for months, San Diego and Jax are actively looking elsewhere.
This change might line up better with some of the bigger leagues and transfer windows outside the U.S. but for most of the NASL players and coaches it might make things harder to move around domestically. Very few players are getting transfers out of NASL to the USL or MLS. Those leagues might sign guys who are out of contract but they won't be out of contract in the winter which is when the teams would be looking for new players. Same thing for coaches.
Thanks. Who all that played the 2017 season has officially shut down or moved to USL (or other league)? I know FC Edmonton have shut down. San Francisco Deltas have shut down. Indy 11 have moved to USL. North Carolina moved to USL. Am I missing anyone?
SF Deltas and Edmonton shut down North Carolina and Indy moved to USL... so far. SD and Jax are looking at possibly making that jump.
but eric wylnada says were not a real soccer country if we don't to this. The coaches who are against must be part of the evil sum/mls cartel
Seriously, they could announce it this way, and instead of it being 2 different seasons it's simply a loooooooong winter break. Sure, why not.
Trending towards a Cosmos versus Miami In a Globetrotter/Generals NASL type schedule except both teams will be garbage.
I'm curious to see how the playoffs will work. Will it be Miami at the Cosmos in one semifinal and the Cosmos at Miami in the other semifinal?
9 games in Miami during the "international" part of the season and five games in New York in the fall with five games in the spring.
