Probably more. The estimate is 2800 people in the world are 7'+:

    https://percentagecalculator.mes.fm/interesting-facts/how-many-7-footers-are-in-the-world

Since the USA has 4.25% of the world's population, we'd expect about 119 people 7-foot and taller in the USA.

However, considering the numbers of people from the tallest human groups present (Americans of Northern European and West African stock), plus the concentration of basketball players from all over the world, that estimate is likely to be low.

I dunno I'm not going to pretend to be an expert on the topic. I just know the easiest way to be a millionaire is probably to be 7 feet tall.

True enough. One of the big issues I have with basketball is that it depends far too much on a single physical characteristic over which people have no control.

Same with rugby, a sport I like, but you cannot be 5'6" and 110 lbs. in rugby and expect not to get crushed.

That's the great thing about soccer. A skinny runt may have the right brain and be very dangerous, destroying much bigger players left and right.

Back in the day there used to be a discipline called anthropometrics.

That allowed researchers to keep meticulous tables of all the measurements in a population, from length of pinky to eye distance.

Sadly, it's gone the way of physiognomy and frenology.

Seems boring as fook to me and I'm glad people moved onto something more interesting.

Most 7 footers suck, though. You'll get a look at that height since there are obvious benefits to having an even moderately skilled big man, but the sport is really dominated by 6-6 to 6-8 athletic freaks of nature or 6-2 lightening quick guards or shooters. I grew up playing ball on playgrounds being the one white dude on the court often and I saw a few pros up close. They are in a universe beyond what most think is possible as an athlete.

It’s the Bill Murray rule. All Olympic sports should have one regular dude for comparison.

Since we're kinda OT anyway, I just got a ticket for the Hanover game in Dortmund on Mar 18. Will spend 10 days in the region. If anyone has been (I remember someone went to an away game recently) and has any useful tips (game or region related) I'd love to hear them. Feel free to PM me. Thanks.

I have never been to a Dortmund game in particular but Bundesliga games are awesome. Unlike most European leagues there's no real strict rules. Outside of the game depending on how much time you have and what you are interested in Munster and Cologne are nice towns to visit. Cologne especially. The Ruhrgebiet area itself isn't bad but kinda boring tourism wise, so if you have more time and a willingness to rent a car I can give you some cool places to go.

I'll be three nights in Dortmund. Need to fill out the other 6. Cologne is on my list. I'll be flying in and out of Frankfurt, so at least one night at the end will be in Frankfurt and I think my path will be CCW from Dortmund to Frankfurt. I really just want to relax and see a few sights (and maybe a nice hike or bicycle ride) on this trip. Leaning towards just using public transport. I can be happy just hanging out in the city and getting a feel for another culture.

Check out the Rhine region between Koblenz and Bingen. Perfect for light hiking and bicycling. Can be done with public transit especially if you don't mind moving slow. (Direct trains from Cologne to Koblenz and Bingen to Frankfurt) It would be a perfect segue from Cologne back to Frankfurt. Mainz also has a nice cathedral if you happen to pass through there on the way to Frankfurt.

I have zero advice on attending the match.

I will however suggest when going thru customs to not tell security you have a lieblingspanzer in your carry on. Not unless you're looking for a cheap thrill and a cupping of the gonads that is.

That reminds me, heard a joke on tv tonight.

A teen student was sitting in math class when the teacher asks him to stand up and answer a question.

    "Vasil, what is 5 + 5"?

Vasil wavers back and forth a bit, fidgeting in his pants and nervously answers "11"?

The teachers says "no Vasil. Take your hands out of your pockets and try again".

keeping in mind that 17% of 70 rounds off to 12...

I think there's some faulty analysis there only to the fact that the NBA (and NCAA) brings 7-footers in from all over the world to play, so if you're an eventual 7-footer that grows up in the U.S. you're probably not 17% likely to play in the NBA, but that the NBA may bring in enough 7-footers to make it likely that close to 17% of 7-footers in the US have played in the NBA.

Also a data problem of NCAA and NBA notoriously fudging heights (like NBA reportedly measuring players in their shoes), while the CDC is going to try and estimate people actually 7-feet tall in bare feet. If you ask how many men in the US are 6'10.5" or taller the increase in number (from 7') is likely to be exponential rather than linear.

So we can agree at lots but I have doubts about 17%

There is no need to rent a car, Between Frankfurt and Dortmund, there are tons of public transport options between and in the cities. Just travel as light as possible. I have been to a match in Dortmund 4 different times. It is amazing, my favorite in Germany. And since the Dortmund game is on a Sunday, you go to a game on Saturday as well if possible.
    Options:
    Frankfurt-Mainz
    Gladbach-Hoffenheim
    (On Friday) Düsseldorf-Bielefeld

    Enjoy!

Still waiting for "lieblingspanzer" to lose it's luster and move on. Tedesco has no right calling Wes "little". The man is a fawn.

    Südtribüne???

I can tell you now - prepare to jump a lot and to stand for the whole 90 min. I have done it a number of times - great fun. But if you are expecting to sit, enjoy a beer and a bratwurst, forget about it. That said, if this is your first experience at the football temple, it will be an unforgettable experience. I have gotten to the point were I like to sit and enjoy the game but the being in the yellow wall was always so awesome as an experience as a football fan.

At least 2 -3 hours or so. You don't want to miss the intro. Goosebumps. Give yourself time after to enjoy the "gift" shop after as well and take lots of pics. I think my second match there was Hannover many years back.

Yellow wall experience was what I was after when I picked the section.

Do they start letting you in the stadium 2-3 hours before, or do you mean just be around the stadium that early?

Any recommendation on a pre-game spot?

I don't remember when they actually open the gates but early. Be sure to check as my information may be outdated. I just would hate the thought of you missing the intro - it has happened to me before.

I cannot say where to hang out as I was usually at my family's house in Recklinghausen or friends in Bochum.
