Europa League Rijeka 1 - 4 Austria Wien Salzburg 0 - 0 Konyaspor Well, the return fixtures had somewhat opposite results. After losing 1-3 at home to Rijeka, Austria won away 4-1 to the same club. And after Salzburg won at Konyaspor, they could only manage a draw at home. Despite the win, Austria Wien is in a difficult position in Group D. They're now in third place, two points behind AEK Athens. That doesn't sound too bad, but consider that Athens next hosts bottom club Rijeka while Austria travels to AC Milan. If the deficit grows to four points, which it well could, the Greek club will clinch it. But if not, Austria might be able to pull it out in the last round where they host Athens. Salzburg still leads Group I and has a four-point lead on the third- and fourth-place teams in the group. With two rounds to go, that's a pretty good position for advancement.
Austria is 11th in the country coefficients for 2013-2014 through 2017-2018 so far. They're 7th for 2017-2018 so far. The last time Austria had a five season sum ranked 11th or better was when they were 11th for 1994-1995 through 1998-1999.
Europa League AC Milan 5 - 1 Austria Wien Salzburg 3 - 0 Vitoria de Guimaraes As expected, Austria lost to Milan--by the same score as when they met in Vienna. The good news is that AEK Athens only drew at home to Rijeka, meaning Austria is only three points behind second-place Athens. Having tied in Athens, any win by Austria against the Greek side in the final round will mean the Viennese club advances. So nice that their fate is in their own hands. Salzburg earned a convincing victory and continues to head Group I. Marseille drew this round, so the lead grew to four points. That guarantees Salzburg will advance as group winners, even if they lose at Marseille in the last round.
Europa League - Final Group Matchday Austria Wien 0-0 AEK(Gre) Marseille 0-0 Salzburg Two Scoreless draws on the final match day. Austria remained in last. If Austria Wien had scored a goal in that final match against Athens, three clubs would have finished with 7 points. But Austria would have won the tie breaker to finished second. So one goal from advancing... The Round of 32 draw was held today, and Salzburg drew Real Sociedad, currently 9th in La Liga. Definitely not an easy draw. Real Sociedad finished behind Zenit in Group L.
Europa League - Round of 32 Real Sociedad 2 - 2 Salzburg Really good result for Salzburg on the road. Took the lead on a 27th minute own goal but needed a 90th minute equalizer to earn the draw. Real Sociedad will now have to play for the win in the return leg in Salzburg.
Round of 32 , 2nd leg Salzburg 2-1 Real Sociedad Dabbur 10 1-0 Navas 28 1-1 V. Berisha 74 (P) 2-1 Salzburg win on Aggregate : 4-3 Salzburg has drawn Borrusia Dortmund with March 8 meeting in Germany.
Europa League - Round of 16 Borussia Dortmund 1 - 2 Salzburg Outstanding away result for Salzburg. Dortmund's a quality side, though, so nothing's decided yet.
Europa League - Round of 16 Salzburg 0 - 0 Borussia Dortmund Dortmund was going to need two away goals to go through. In the end, Salzburg kept a clean sheet and advanced to the quarterfinals. Really nice result eliminating a club like Dortmund!
Good show by Salzburg. Next up in the quarterfinals is Lazio. First leg in Rome on 5 April. Return leg in Salzburg on 12 April.
Not a bad draw for Salzburg at this stage. Could have played Atletico Madrid or Arsenal. A very interesting matchup would have been against fellow Red Bull club Leipzig.
Europa League - Quarterfinals Lazio 4 - 2 Salzburg Salzburg 4 - 1 Lazio Lazio must have liked their chances after a scoreless first half and then opening the scoring in the return leg. But then Salzburg came roaring back with four goals, the last three within a four-minute period to advance 6-5 on aggregate. Interestingly, Marseille is also in the semifinals after finishing second to Salzburg in Group I earlier in the competition.
And Salzburg drew their group stage opponents in the semis. It’s definitely a winnable tie, as they played Marseille 1-0 and 0-0 about six months.
Europa League Semifinal Marseille 2 - 0 Salzburg Marseille is in a good position with a two-goal advantage and no away goals conceded. But Salzburg was also down two after the away leg against Lazio, so they’ll need the same type of response at home as last round.
Europa League Semifinal Salzburg 2 - 1 Marseille (AET) Gotta feel gutted for Salzburg here. After a scoreless first half, they got the two goals needed to even the series. In extra time, it seemed Salzburg was taking the initiative and had a couple of really solid scoring chances. Then Marseille was awarded a corner for a shot that was clearly deflected off a Marseille player--and of course, with only a few minutes left, they scored that all-important away goal on the ensuing corner. In the final minutes and after the whistle, it was all too apparent that Salzburg felt undone by an officiating mistake. Sad that they had to go out that way, especially considering the shots on goal were 11-6 in Salzburg's favor over the two legs.
