If Jurgen's parenting is anything like his coaching, Jonathan probably got more motivational speeches than anything resembling teaching. Seriously though, happy for the kid. Pretty nice debut at a solid level. This cohort of young players is absolutely killing it lately!
If Mom doesn't speak and they did't use it at home the most likely he knows enough but isn't comfortable doing a interview in it.
There's a previous video in the thread where he gets questions asked in German and he answers in English. I've seen that pattern for bilingual kids before.
I think it's hard to pick up a language when only one parents speaks it. I think Sami Khedira doesn't speak Arabic either for example.
My toddler will only reply to me in Lithuanian even though she understands everything I say to her in English. The only English she'll say to anyone is "come on" and "kick the ball." Whenever she needs to say something to me, she tells my wife to translate for her because my Lithuanian hasn't caught up with hers.
I grew up in a pretty diverse area with a bunch of first generation Americans. A lot of the kids have a solid grasp of their parents first language when they first start speaking, but as they get older and go to school, they tend to rely on English and less on their parents language. Often their parents push English at home to make sure they don't fall behind in the school. After a few years, they struggle speaking because they don't have practice, but they still tend to have a solid understanding. By then, they can recall whenever their parents speak or relatives speak, but struggle speaking back.
This guy on reddit said he went to international school with Jonathan when he was with Bayern’s youth team, which would be 2008, he said Jonathan’s German was fine. In this video he is responding in English immediately after the question so at least he understands it.
Wait. Klinsman is a professional player starting in games? I'm sure I was assured he only got into Cal cause his dad had a helicopter. Is this the same Klinsmann? (happy for the kid, even if I'll never really forgive the spelling mistake in the tweet. But in all honesty how perfectly ironic and soccer-God-ish would it be if Jonathan K turns out to be The Next Big Thing in American goalkeeping and we're stuck praising him for the next 20 years.)
He's in the traveling squad for tomorrow's BL match: Training is over and the decisions have been made. Here's the squad for our trip to @FCA_World! 👊🏻 #FCABSC #hahohe pic.twitter.com/LAUeAzDYce— Hertha BSC (EN) (@HerthaBSC_EN) December 9, 2017
no its the same klinsmann who started on the us u20 cuz his dad was full usmnt coach....and had a horrible howler in his first game in the tourney.... https://as.com/videos/2017/05/23/en/1495549986_735669.html and stayed starter despite costing the team a win in the first game of that tourney. and the same guy who wa very cruel about donovan missing brazil b/c of his dad's ego. and the only plyer who earned a deal from the us u-20 run to quarters in the 2017 WC. His success - whatever that turns out to be - will be evidence that 'who you know' and connections matter a lot in soccer. you have to be given the opportunity to be successful.....many deserving players do not get the opportunity...not everyone has jurgen klinsmann or bob bradley or bruce arena for a dad.....there simply arent as many slots for players at the international level as there are players who could play at that level. so....success isnt about talent exclusively. its a combination of talent, luck, and connections etc..... anyone who was critical of jonathon klinsmann had every right to ...he brought it all on him self....and i dont care if he is the next oliver kahn ...im never gonna be a fan.
sorry but a previous poster implied that criticism of JK JR was due to his dad having a helicopter...when there was a lot more to it than that.
Did he get an opportunity because of his dad? It probably was a factor as he had said in an interview that Hertha called his dad to speak about a trial. Is this a big deal? No. Because he has to prove himself to get a spot. This isn't a father giving the son a nice job where he can sit idly and collect a paycheck.
Sorry, didn't mean to trigger. Too soon, I guess... I will admit I'm impressed. I saw him play club a few times and wasn't sure he was athletic enough to ever make an impact. I'd be happy to be wrong. Early days, obviously, but he's not crashed and burned yet.
