No more compelling reason for Crew to stay in Columbus. This photo raises the hair on the back of my neck. This is only tangentially Akron Zip related and really belongs on the MLS forum.
On this Thanksgiving, I am thankful that the Akron Zips are still in the NCAA Tournament. (Zips Soccer is much more palatable dinner conversation that national politics.) That alone makes 2017 a successful soccer season. The A-Roo flag yet flies from my front porch during Thanksgiving! As many of you know, that is the indication of a good year in Zips Soccer. Cheers to all Akron Zips throughout the world! May everyone have a blessed holiday with family and friends!
Right on. May the weather not be even slightly bad so the NCAA has an excuse to move the game to Madison. (Still bitter about several screwings at the hands of the powers that be...)
Akron 3-2 Wisconsin OT Zips dominated most of first hour. Badgers dominated last half hour. Both sides hit woodwork at least twice. Many chances throughout contest. Great advertisement for NCAA soccer! Very entertaining for non-partisans; nerve-wracking for the devout. Badgers #10 Mueller is one hell of a player! Zips got a bit lucky; it could have gone either way. Salmon Stew! (Sam Gainford, Stu Holthusen.) Holthusen has scored in 7 consecutive matches? Can that even be true?
Zips were quite poor defensively after scoring their second. I think they should watch all the chances and situations where they should have pressed harder. Something tells me they were feeling far too comfortable for long stretches. Wisconsin is a good team that punished some lackadaisical play.
Confirmed. Stuart Holthusen has scored at least one goal in 7 consecutive matches. One hat trick and one brace in that time span. The last match in which Stu did NOT score was October 24th in Pittsburgh. He has 12 on the season. THAT is finishing strong! The senior may play at some professional level after all. But before that, he needs to score more for Zips!
Straight from the Pitch: Head coach John Trask "Congratulations to the University of Akron. It was a great soccer game -- the type of match you expected in the round of 16. A lot of individual ability from both teams. The environment the game was played in was probably the best part of the contest. It was a special game. The field was beautiful; the atmosphere was incredible. I didn't expect anything less. One team had to go down today and unfortunately it was the University of Wisconsin. But I'll take that type of effort out of my guys any day of the week. I think we showed people who we are as team." "Chris is a phenomenal player. He picked up two assists today which makes 20 on the year… that is basically an assist a game. He had a great free kick that caught the underside of the crossbar. Chris is a magical senior who will go on to play at the next level. All of our seniors make up a group that will leave a lasting legacy. I feel like this time there is a new standard for people who are going to represent us. I know the alumni and administration will be proud of the effort we put forth today. Once again, congrats to Akron." John Trask showing his quality.
Nice match-up in Louisville Friday night between Louisville and Akron. Not sure I'll catch the game, already had plans on the weekend. Will determine later in the week if it changes.
Really looking forward to this match-up. I've been able to see both teams online a few times this year, and both are very entertaining teams to watch. Hopefully Akron can continue the run they've had over the last couple of months.

Portland Timbers Saad Abdul-Salaam ... Sporting KC Ben Zemanski ... Free Agent Teal Bunbury, Kofi Sarkodie ... Out of Contract Perry Kitchen is somewhere in Denmark (forget). Randers? DeAndre Yedlin plays for Newcastle United in EPL. I think these players together could field a competitive MLS side.
