Germany is playing top teams, which are European. Uruguay doesn't need to play Argentina and Brazil yet again, but European teams.
I agree with both of those. The top teams in Europe can play other top teams they don't play in WCQs without flying across an ocean.
South American and Asian teams travel all the time to Europe to play friendly games. It is about time Euro teams get off their collective arses and play games in South America.
Yes, some players are based in Europe but many players are not. It wouldn't kill Euro teams to travel a bit. This is not 1917, it is 2017.
Not gonna happen, so just another reason why friendlies offer little to fans. Bring on the Nations Leagues.
Quite a few South American teams sell the rights to their friendlies to a 3rd party that's looking for lucrative deals (losing some control over which teams they'll play). In Europe they can get more money (they get paid a lot to come over). To play the top sides costs a fortune and the smaller FAs can't afford that (unless somebody else is in a generous mood), likewise for South American FAs. It's a business. You might even see more UEFA teams, the top sides, in South America once the GNL starts.
That would be a welcome side effect. I'm not actually against this, but I'm pretty cynical about national team football.
According to the proposal, the inter-confederation matches would be only for the final stage, and those would be held at neutral venues.
It's like the Confederations Cup but instead of the Euros and Copa America you have these regional pools. The final stage of the Global NL would actually be a good replacement of the Confederations Cup.
Has more info been divulged? Cfr. UNL2018/19 I'm guessing those Final 8 events would be hosted by one of the 8 finalists in June of the following year as well. With 7 leagues (+ Final 8 events) every confed would be involved and would get their fair share of games. When it's good enough for the World Cup, why shouldn't it be for the Nations League? For the UNL it's just the one Final 4 main event (4 games in 4 days) and 2 stadiums should suffice. The hosts are picked in Dec.2018 and have half a year to prepare (not much but there'll most likely be candidates that could "pull it off tomorrow"). As the Final 8 events of the GNL2020/21 will take place in early June 2021, e.g. 5-13 June 2021, those hosts also won't have much time to prepare. Especially in the bottom league, which includes non-FIFA teams, this could present problems. Maybe host selection will happen earlier and it won't necessarily be one of the 8 finalists? The mention of "one intense week of football" leads me to believe you'd be looking at 4 stadiums for the 8 games.
I wonder if Conmebol will join forces with Concacaf (and OFC with AFC). All that's needed is cooperation for the 3 international breaks with NL games (+/- Final 8). In case there's a lack of cooperation Conmebol and OFC teams could be stuck in their league in certain instances (instead of being involved in the promotion/relegation battle).
