why have they seemingly got rid of 2 games during the 10am EST slot?

    Just a money grab?

they always used to show 2 games, there are 6 scheduled for that time slot.

NBC Sports Gold - en Shower I say. :)

The answer is transparent. You provided it yourself.. $$.

Even in this era of hyper-sexuality, Weinstein et al... NBC's motives are not S&M I'm afraid.

I haven't been keeping records, but from recollection I wouldn't say it was ever routine for NBC to show two matches on TV at 10h00 ET

Pretty sure they've done it a few times, between NBCSN & CNBC.

And certainly they did it EVERY SINGLE SATURDAY up until this season, when they used to offer those fantastic Live Extra Channels on cable. Sorry, that's a sore subject with me.

That’s the past. NBC has the rights and they can decide to do whatever they want with them.

The people that want everything OTA can easily bid for the rights and then show them for free.

Don’t know why NBC can’t try to get more cash from the hardcore audience. Those live extra matches must have gotten negative ratings.

The live extra matches that I recorded last year have been repacked with WTA Tennis, Bundesliga, World Cup Skiing, etc. No big deal.

I didn’t purchase the gold package this year. I watch most of my sports on delay so the gold package isn’t something I need. Plus I can wait 2-3 days to watch highlights so match of the day does not need to be timely for me. Besides, the NBC app has 3 minute highlights of all the matches so that works for me too.

Sure they have the absolutely right.

    And I'm happy you're happy.

But for some if us, those Live Extra channels were like gold! Pun intended.

This is the last week of the NASCAR season. A NASCAR season is February to November with about the same length as the Premier League season.

You can tell from the list of games on Gold that two 10:00 A.M. games will be on next Saturday, Manchester United vs. Brighton and Hove Albion and Tottenham vs. West Bromwich Albion. There are unusual start times on Sunday November 26 with Southampton vs. Everton at 8:30 A.M., Burnley vs. Arsenal at 9:00 A.M., and Huddersfield Town vs. Manchester City at 11:00 A.M. I have no idea when the last time there were overlapping start times other than 2:45 P.M. and 3:00 P.M. on weekdays. Everton and Arsenal can't play until Sunday because they're in the Europa League on Thursday, but normally when that happens they play at 7:00 A.M., 9:15 A.M., and 11:30 A.M. without overlap.

No, mostly because SportsTVRatings stopped doing his daily tables :)

Ratings have been fine/steady overall this season. Weekly recaps here:

    Two questions:
    1) The link you provided seems to show EPL Week 5 from 2 months ago as it's most recent report. Is this really the best source?
    2) Do ratings include the people who watch via NBC.com, either for free or via the Gold paywall? Or do they focus only on traditional TV?

NB - there's more recent info in there. SMW combines sports in their posts, so Premier League can be down the list. Such as --
    http://www.sportsmediawatch.com/2017/11/breeders-cup-ratings-epl-xfinity-series/

Ratings from the match week prior to the intl break. Last weekends recap will be up later in the week.

Almost all the independent media ratings articles you'll see use standard Nielsen numbers, so traditional TV only. Streaming numbers are usually released by the network companies directly. And they're not super useful, see example from last year:

Thanks, I shoulda noticed that. Does anyone do more of an at-a-glance spreadsheet version of USA Sports TV ratings, if not EPL ratings all on their own?

Self-reported ratings... hmm, that seems ripe for corruption... sorry "spin".

So if the future of "TV" viewing is via streaming like this, how is that going to disrupt the independent ratings business and the advertising contracts that are presumably based on these past ratings?

I'm admittedly not a scholar of this kind of business (tv/media/ratings/advertising) so please forgive my newbie questions. ;)

Hollywood is a strangely stuck in its ways place. Networks like the old school basis of Nielsen ratings and what they tell advertisers, so that's why the metric sticks around. But new school ratings would be incredibly easy. For streaming you just simply count up the impressions/visitors/minutes consumed. Just like Google does with YouTube. That's where we'll end up once the networks finally cave on how entertainment will be distributed moving forward.

As for NBC and streaming, broadcast, Gold, etc... They are going to keep those numbers close to the vest. IMO, what NBC is doing isn't about boosting the digital audience or making money on Gold, it's about limiting their included, basic subscription offerings to drive more rated households to the NBC/NBCSN/CNBC broadcast matches. To get the average viewer to realize that those 4 or 5 games are the easiest to access, so plan on them. Whatever cash they get back from Gold is kind of a bonus.

If someone puts together a comp between this season and the last few, we could see if that strategy is bearing fruit for NBC or not. But I wouldn't really evaluate those trends until the 2nd half of the season.

But how can you expect or trust that each company/channel will be honest, accurate & consistent, when self-reporting?

Sure this digital viewing metric is in some ways much easier to capture, but each company could do it differently, slightly different ways of tallying viewership, more or less accurately, more or less honestly. And these content companies could range from small-budget boutique providers to large network providers with deep pockets.

As flawed as the traditional Neilsen system has been, it is seemingly an independent third-party doing the measurements and reporting. So moving away from that independent monitoring company would seem to lower the accountability of this process, this info.

As much as Internet streaming represents an opportunity to get away form the old middleman model, i.e. cable companies, I've been thinking lately about the benefits of streaming middlemen, as aggregators of channels. Not only could this help make things simpler and cheaper for consumers, it could perhaps provide a more objective, third-party method of tracking viewership numbers?

The stats won't be self-reported, they will be collected by an independent company like Nielsen. Nielsen already does digital:
    http://www.nielsen.com/us/en/solutions/capabilities/digital-ad-ratings.html

And all that really matters is that advertisers trust the stats they're getting from their network clients.

I have been assuming that the viewing stats are in the hands of the content provider, because they own and manage their streaming platforms, right? And if so, Nielsen would have to depend on the data provided to them by the provider or network, no?

But from the link that you provided I found this, which perhaps is related:

    VIEWABILITY AND FRAUD
Viewability by demographic reporting, which leverages the client’s preferred viewability provider and viewability threshold. Nielsen also detects and removes fraudulent bot activity through internal procedures, and reports enhanced and sophisticated fraud when viewability is enabled with the client’s chosen provider.

And I started to wonder what is "the client's preferred viewability provider" or "viewability enabled with the client's chosen provider"?

Also noticed the tiny little loophole of "detects and removes fraudulent bot activity through internal procedures". ;)

Oh boy, it's not hard to start thinking about the digital problems had by Facebook, Equifax, Anthem, HomeDepot, Yahoo, ... not to mention those security-minded folks at CIA & NSA ;) Sorry, I have to stop that!!

Anyway, if we've learned anything from the Internet it's that it comes with both amazing revolutionary capabilities and amazing methods of corruption.

But I suppose with a Digital Viewers Rating system, does the public much care if it's corrupt? Seems like the integrity of a Presidential election is a tad more important.

Do most networks run their own servers or platforms? I know Netflix uses Amazon.
