Ella Masar-McLeod is considering playing for Canada and, for once, the article isn't a "she has a Canadian passport, so she can play for them now" piece, but actually looks at the real FIFA obstacles to playing for a country of new citizenship:

The Illinois-born player, whose versatility defies easy categorization into one position, has one cap for the United States women’s national team – a 2009 friendly in Germany. That’s not the issue. FIFA allows a one-time nationality switch for players who didn’t compete in a “competitive” match, and those rules may be eased soon. [BostonRed note: a friendly doesn't require a one-time switch].

FIFA could at least use some clarity. A statute called “Acquisition of a new nationality” says a player who isn’t already tied to one national team may switch if (among other possibilities, none of which apply to Masar) “he has lived continuously for at least five years after reaching the age of 18 on the territory of the relevant association.”

In Masar’s case – indeed, for most professional soccer players – it’s impossible to “live continuously” anywhere. She has been spending her off-seasons in Canada, but she has been playing elsewhere – in the U.S., in France, then in Sweden with FC Rosengard, where she has been one of the league’s top scorers in each of her two seasons, attracting attention across Europe.

Canada Soccer and a representative of FIFPro, the international players union, declined comment on Masar’s pending case. But Masar is fully engaged with FIFPro and is encouraged by what she’s heard from Canadian coach John Herdman and others north of the border.

“I think they’re positive,” Masar says. “Last winter, I was in training with them a little bit. They needed some numbers. I’ve become a fan of them with Erin. I’ve talked to John a couple of times. They’re in the waiting game as well. From what I can tell, if we get this done with FIFA, he’ll give me a chance – if I keep doing my job, he’ll definitely give me a chance.”

While FIFA has been granting waivers on the "5 after 18" rule, hers would likely be outside the intent of the waiver process. She's never played for a team in Canada (that's generally how FIFA has defined residence in these cases) and hasn't lived anywhere close to 5 years in the country (she got her citizenship very fast - faster than Canadian law - so we have to assume the government issued it to her outside the process). That is also something FIFA is leery of. Of course, there are no professional women's teams in Canada and only a handful of post-grad options, so it's possible FIFA might lean in that direction.

Nothing specific, but I wouldn't read too much into it. She was called into the team for their trip to China at the last minute in October. She just might be in school (fairly common for an NWSL rookie to finish the missed spring semester) or might just be taking some time off.

I am glad to see Charlyn Corral back on the Mexico team. You may recall she was thrown off the team a couple of years for suggesting that the coach should be fired -- a totally correct opinion.

She's a very good striker. And had a couple of outstanding seasons at Louisville.
