Dest as a finished product could paint a picture as to what Yedlin could have been had he spent his formative years at Ajax and not Emerald City FC.

Kid is lightning quick. Obviously he's still developing but the defensive potential is frightening.

But can he play on the left? THAT would be exciting.

    Hackworth says he can:

Sergino Dest [from Ajax Amsterdam’s youth program] was in two camps last year and played in Nike Friendlies in more of a reserve role. He’s a very attacking outside back, who can play right or left, so we’ve added some depth there.

Dest started today at left back for the US in their massive victory over Paraguay, so any doubt about his positional versatility is no more.

He was very good going forward, few shaky moments but played well in his half, then was taken out for unknown reasons. I expect big things for the young man.

Very good speed and acceleration, haven't seen much of his delivery yet, but his foot skills appear to be solid. Certainly a nice surprise as he's come out of nowhere.

Is it me, or does he look like he could be Tyler Adams' twin?

Thought he looked amazing as a right back. Thought he looked... meh as a left back. Could’ve been tired, could’ve just been a bad game. Definitely want him to keep starting somewhere though

This kid playing for the US is a major coup for the youth national squads and hopefully for the men's team soon. Good on Hackworth and company for getting him in the fold. We need more of his type of technical skill on our backline.

    And the answer is...

    American military dad.

    http://americansoccernow.com/articles/sergino-dest-16-is-opening-eyes-at-the-u-17-world-cup

The Dutch federation has shown little interest in Dest despite him playing for the country’s most storied club. But Dest has definitely noticed the U.S. U-17 team, and believes that this generation of American players is of very high quality.

“This team is good,” Dest said emphatically. “When I was growing up in Holland, you would think the USA isn't that good. This team is just different. I think this team is similar to a European team.

It's always been weird to me how soccer players are open about their favorite teams and/or their desire to play for a certain team. Dest straight ul says his favorite team is Barcelona while he's contracted to Ajax.

You hardly see anything like that in American sports -- and when you do it's publicized like a big deal like Marshawn Lynch returning to his hometown, or LeBron coming back to Cleveland. I guess the flexibility of not soccer contracts helps with that though.

In soccer I think it's understood that everyone wants to keep moving up the ladder, and for the most part everyone knows which clubs are highest on the ladder. The salary caps and parity of the US sports mean that some of the best players end up on mediocre teams for their whole careers, or they have to choose between more money and more championships, so it's not a wise career move to say that you've always wanted to play for a certain team, at least until you've actually moved to that team. This is especially true since most players in the US leagues can be traded without their consent.

Sergino played 90 in a 0 - 2 loss - but despite this Ajax U19 progress to the next round on a 4 - 3 agg. (unreported that they won the first leg 4 - 1)

Both our boys look really good. Dest is #15, and Weah is #10 for PSG. He looks very dangerous with his runs.

I was impressed that Dest looked better and better as the game went on. His conditioning was excellent and he never faded which is typical in Youth games. He had a chance at the end but pulled the shot wide.
