Local pays better (from what I hear); more bang for the buck. And some of those "big sponsors", like car companies are actually paid for by the local dealers, not corporate.
To be fair, there is one other major statewide health provider who is HQ'd in Sacramento and has the juice to do a jersey sponsorship, but they're already repping some other team's jersey. No other national/global company will come in until MLS is secured.
In light of yesterday's news of the (very good) possibility of Columbus moving to Austin, I believe we are about to see a major reshuffling of the expansion derby rankings. Do not be surprised if Cincinnati vaults up to #1, because there's no way MLS is going to want to leave Ohio without a team.
Option #1 would be hope for a replacement through expansion - that's unlikely. Option #2 would be to repurpose the stadium or find another tenant, since (according to the local paper in CBus) the lease indicates that if the team leaves early they have to find a suitable replacement professional team. Option #3 would be tear the effer down.
Like Bet2Win or 1888Bet or all the gambling/alcohol logos I see splattered all over top division teams from the "big" soccer leagues?
Whaaat you mean MLS doesn't negotiate the sponsors for all teams, individual teams do?? Yeah, I know, dude. I'm saying across the league teams can and should do better with sponsorships. It's chump change compared to the advertising/sponsorship across other professional sports in the US. Instead of regional health companies, and national or global brand name would be better.
Why? Big national/global companies can sponsor the league and get national exposure. Sacramento focused companies would want to partner with a Sacramento based team. Whoever pays is what matters
Meh, I prefer local sponsorship. SRFC will be reppin' a piece of Sacramento's identity..kinda like Chico's Bail Bonds did for the Bad News Bears.
Which soccer league does better? I look around and see a lot of crap out there. MLS's national jersey sponsors include a lot of MLM companies. Overseas I see a lot of gambling sites. For the most part jerseys aren't A-1 Prime real estate for major companies. And when they are, it's only the one or two teams that either command a large percentage of the country's fan base (Rangers/Celtic/Chivas/America) or part of the G14-18-20 supergroup of UEFA clubs with world-wide followings. And even then you still get some questionable companies.
Ton of posts in this thread, but will ask anyway. LAFC coming in next year creates the odd number since Miami did not arrive as planned. COULD Sacramento jump in next year to keep league as even number? San Jose played at a smaller stadium than yours, so that shouldn't be an issue. Would you have enough time to add key players? I just look at Minnesota this year and they came in on short timetable and it kind of showed. League would have to move a Western team to the east, but that would be a temporary thing and its been done before.
No. League has already gone in record saying that LAFC is the only team for 2018. Sac has its sights set on 2020. They could have had the stadium ready in time for 2919 if MLS had given Sac the nod earlier this year, but the timeframe is just too short now. Re: them using a temp stadium for 2019? Possible, but unlikely. The more recent teams using temp facilities (NYCFC, Orlando Minny, and ATL all had temp locations with large capacities and decent VIP/club amenities. Sac just can’t touch that with Papa Murphy. If MLS really wants a team for 2019 (which I don’t think they do), they’ll go with the other team paired with Sac. Cincy, Nashville or Detroit all have suitable temp stadiums. I personally hope all new teams only enter with a completed SSS.
After the Detroit Ford Field fiasco it’s down to three, and both Nashville and Cincy getting some wobble to their tables , Sacramento seems like a slam dunk. Shocking that Sacramento could be the only shovel ready candidate. Garber might have to roll up his sleeves and help both Cincy and Nashville over the finish line. Let all three of Sac Cincy and Nashville I’m and tell Miami to bugger off til they’re serious
I would be shocked if they delayed Sac. We are ready to begin building, and have a SSS ready for 2020. That provides MLS a huge amount of adaptability going forward- esp. in light of potential delays in the other prospective markets (and Miami).
If MLS decides to delay and not give Sacramento it's long overdue spot next month, I seiously doubt it's ever going to happen. It will also say a lot about MLS in regards to awarding franchises based on who they want and not on actual merit/meeting criteria.
It occurs to me that this could be a sign of good news coming in December. Assuming that, once a franchise is awarded, the seam is "sold" to Kevin and he'll want his own people running the show. The Smiths, et.al., could be looking for other opportunities. Or, maybe Adam just wants a a new challenge.
