I'm not surprised. Criminally underrated. Can barely get a mention in this forum. We still have people who want Wil Trapp over him. Meanwhile, our midfield is softer than toilet paper and Williams was a defensive assassin today.
He should have been called for the last set. I am on this train. And have been. We need someone of that ilk out there with Mikey. If Jones is past it, it has to beWilliams, as Acosta is not there yet.
Criminally overrated due to the league his club team plays in. There's this obsession with thinking players who find some way to get onto a roster of a team in a big league are all of a sudden now better than they were when they played in lower leagues. See: Alfredo Morales. You either are good enough or you aren't. It doesn't change if you find your way onto a relegation fodder side. Williams has never been good enough for the USMNT.
\When was the last time you saw Trapp mentioned? In your dreams, maybe. Didn't see Danny play but he's not really known for stout play. Having said that if you give me the choice of Danny or Nagbe-Acosta, I'm taking Danny 8 days a week.
One or two posters are pretty big Trapp fans. Their comments can be found in the 'Flavour's' thread. Morales went on to establish himself as a starter following his last US appearances. Williams actually played well in WCQing of the previous cycle. He ran into injuries. Then when he switched to the C'ship, JK unfriended him. Based on last cycle's play, he'd easily fit in a 5-man CM pool with Bradley, Roldan, Nagbe, and Acosta. Of course, Williams has likely improved.
Unfriended?? DWill had 12 US caps ('11 to '13) playing with Hoffenheim and 10 US caps ('14 to '16) while at Reading. He was behind Jones, Bradley, Bedoya, and Beckerman on the CM depth chart but there was a sense that it was a matter of time before he replaced Beckerman. Untimely injuries (start of HEX 2014, pre-WC2014 and pre-GC2015) were setbacks but the fact that Arena has not even called him in because "there are players in MLS at his position" is very disturbing.
I'm close to this view, but not quite so negative. I thought Williams was a mixed bag in his earlier caps and won't be a savior for the USMNT, but given the way other CM options have failed to make a case for themselves recently, it might be time to give Williams another shot. I will say I totally agree on Morales. Dude was always an empty shirt for the US, and from what I saw, was effective in the Bundesliga only as part of a bus-parking strategy.
Morales played mostly on the flanks for the US, whereas he became a starter at CM with the Ingolstadt. Williams has not played any competitive matches with the NT during this cycle.
Today. Wasn't dreaming either. Perhaps you overrate or underrate him based on what league he plays in. Please do me a favor and not include mean in that. I simply look at our player pool, our strengths/weaknesses, then suggest who can help the weaknesses. And given our severe lack of bite and work rate, even presence centrally, Williams is the top candidate to answer to that particular weakness. You'll notice I wanted him brought in last year too when he was ballin' with Reading. Morales has nada to do with Williams.
Gonzalez and Monterrey just won again. Gonzalez had a good game at the 6. At 18, his teammates trust and even defer to him. He covers a lot ground and closes attackers quickly. Attackers are not able to turn him. His outlets are simple but well paced, and his work behind them gives Monterrey attackers a lot of freedom. Need to see him in a higher paced environment.
Bring 'em both in. If for nothing else someone may have emergency duty if Bradley picks up an injury. Right now I guess Dax would play defensive mid if that happened. Arena needs to know who else there is. Maybe another d-mid could even rotate with him if we make the WC.
Julian Green starting for GF. yellow in the first half. Finally getting PT. its a start, and hopefully he doesnt let it go and shows well enough to continue
I'd pay-per-view to see Bradley with JGo and Delgado as 8's. What a show. Throw a 3rd cb like EPB behind them to keep the billy goats off the bridge and give Bradley some slack to operate and watch our fleet forwards do their thing. Yedlin and Rowe as wb's? Next cycle.
That last sentence is of great importance. The Mexican league gives players a lot of time on the ball. He's unlikely to get a chance with the full team prior to the WC but if he does how he handles a press and a few less seconds will be key.

Some info on Gonzalez and Mexico ================== https://www.starsandstripesfc.com/u...3502/mexico-usa-usmnt-jonathan-gonzalez-usynt The Récord report states that Monterrey boss Antonio "Turco" Mohamed has recommended Gonzalez to Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio. Mohamed supposedly warned Osorio that if Mexico doesn’t act soon, Gonzalez will be cap-tied by the USMNT. The report also claims that Gonzalez is undecided about his international future. This seems rather odd, as it was previously reported that Gonzalez rejected an opportunity to sign with Chivas Guadalajara (a team that only signs players who are eligible and open to playing for the Mexican National team) in order to play for the United States. Additionally, this summer one of Gonzalez’s former youth coaches insisted that he wanted to represent the United States: “When it comes to Mexico or the United States, most say they’ll go with whoever calls them first because they just want to play internationally,” Alianza’s Joaquin Escoto said. “But Jonathan always wanted to play for the United States.”
so while Mexico has new added incentive to win these last two games it certainly does not preclude them from rostering Gonzalez and getting him 5 minutes in one of the two games to cap tie him.
What precludes them is that he played for us in an official youth competition (CONCACAF U-20 Championship). He'd need to file a one-time switch to play for Mexico. In the unlikely event Jonathan ever plays for them, it won't be in these games. Side note: I wonder if Tab Ramos knew what he was doing when he gave Jonathan those 22 minutes against St. Kitts and Nevis....
I think the problem for a young guy looking at USMNT midfield is that the views of American managers is ice age quality when it comes to midfield performance. Passing and positioning can be total crap if they can put in a fast 40yd dash once or twice a game. The dream midfielder of the US soccer media was Tyler Adams, somebody who was not much more than a traffic cone in the U20's recent run. A Maryland student was our best midfielder in the finals.(Eryck Williamson).http://www.umterps.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=210260693 Youth teams are stuck in 4 man back line with "6" dmid as their official formation. I'm hoping JGo commits to USA on basis that Vanney becomes the manager next cycle. The deficit in midfield is going to be glaring in Russia. The pipeline is dry - compared to other positions. Vanney would never put up with the performance we are getting from the current midfield.
Yedlin looked very good for Newcastle in their win vs. Stoke on Saturday. Caused Stoke a lot of problems down the right hand side.
