Post http://nypost.com/2017/08/29/brian-cashman-is-going-to-japan-with-eyes-on-a-superstar/ Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is the latest baseball executive traveling to Japan to scout superstar pitcher/outfielder Shohei Ohtani, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. Two weeks ago the Dodgers, led by president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman, were in Japan to look at the 23-year-old sensation who could leave Japan for MLB following the season. The Red Sox are reportedly interested in Ohtani as well. Due to the terms of the collective bargaining agreement and Ohtani’s age, the most he could get from the Yankees currently is about $8 million in a signing bonus. The only way to increase the amount is by acquiring other clubs’ international pool money in a trade. An ankle injury has limited Ohtani’s playing time this season and necessitated a stint on the disabled list. In 44 games as a hitter this season for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, the left-handed-hitting Ohtani is batting .345 (49-for-142) with 5 homers and 21 RBIs. Ohtani, a right-handed pitcher, has appeared in just one game and worked 1¹/₃ innings last Friday. In 2016, the 6-foot-4 hurler was 10-4 with a 1.86 ERA in 21 games (20 starts). Lifetime in 382 games, Ohtani is batting .285 with 45 homers and 156 RBIs. As a pitcher he is 39-14 with a 2.55 ERA in 81 games (78 starts). He has struck out 597 in 519 innings. Matt Holliday finally comes back from the DL tonight. He last played on August 4. Luis Cessa goes on the DL with a ribcage injury. Aaron Judge hit two homers in Sunday's game, giving him an American League-leading 41 on the season. He is only the second rookie to hit 40 or more home runs -- Mark McGwire had 49 in 1987 for Oakland. Additionally, Judge's walk in the 2nd inning was his 107th of the season. Several sources and news reports (including one on ESPN) are claiming this is major league record for rookies, surpassing Les Fleming of the 1942 Cleveland Indians, who walked 106 times. But Ted Williams walked 107 times in 1939, his first year in the majors.
