If Kovacic was willing to leave Liverpool then we should pay the €50m buyout and sign him up right now. He is a phenomenal player and would be starting if Madrid didn't have Kroos and Modric and Isco to compete against. Top player with a bright future in a position of need with a very reasonable fee. Alonso has really impressed me as of late. Not just with his form but the fact that he has shown fight and desire and commitment despite the fact that we have been clearly shopping for Alex Sandro who would take his starting spot. I hope we find a backup for Alonso, he has earned his spot in the XI and I don't see the need to splash £50m+ on a replacement for him. Spend the money on a midfielder, right wing back, backup left wing back, and I think we need another striker. Personally, for me, Michy is not ready and should be loaned out if we bring someone else in.
Soton just signed a defender from Lazio, Wesley Hoedt, which is interesting. If we do get Van Dijk, I wonder if Luiz becomes our new central midfielder reinforcement.
It would make no sense for the club to buy Van Dijk. We have 5 Solid CBs. We need players for every other position aside from CB lol... why go out and spend £60m on another CB.
Have you all seen the SportBild report that Tuchel has met with Marina about replacing Conte? There was no timetable, but it's an interesting thought all the same considering how much Tuchel likes youth.
Chelsea have no succession plan for Conte and Tuchel is not a name on their radar #cfc— Matt Law (@Matt_Law_DT) August 23, 2017 Bild wrote Arsenal made formal approach for Tuchel on the morning a few English papers said Arsenal were finally committed to keeping Wenger— John Cross (@johncrossmirror) August 23, 2017
I posted this over in the manager thread. Tuchel hasn't won much and his representative has said they haven't been in touch at all. I think this youth idea around Chelsea is odd. Our MO is to buy players with high resale. That usually means they're young. But we rarely promote from our youth squad. Neither does Dortmund. Pulisic is an outlier. We're a stepping stone to Madrid, Barca, Munich right now. Our plan is to buy quality players and keep them as long as we can and be the best in England. Secondly, we want to compete with the best in Europe.
Since when? When was the last time we've lost a high quality player to those four? Robben? And that was over ten years ago. That one season aside, we consistently compete for trophies and have always done well in the CL.
Candreva keeps hanging around as a rumor. For 25m, yeeah, I'll take him. He's 30 but seems to be a late bloomer. Tons of loans early on but has been playing regularly with Lazio, Inter, and Italy. Not many injuries, if any. Plus if we get him, we'll have an Antonio and a Kante on the field if they both start. It's worth it for that.
Actually, you're right. I can't think of other examples other than rumors around Courtois and Hazard. Makes the whole resale issue odd.
Courtois because we loaned him to the mattress makers for a few years and Hazard because he just so happens to like Zidane. And the selling of young players? The Barcas, Mardrids, Bayerns and such sell a lot of youth products. MIlan's sold a few of their youth players and bought them back.
A lot likely hinges on how quickly the selling clubs find suitable replacements, which Im sure our club reps are also helping with. Down and dirty. Any amount of money for Drinkwater is really embarrasing, though.
I'm not exactly excited at the prospect either but the reality is unless 2 of Kante/Baka/Fab go down, he isn't going to see much time. The amount of people beating their heads into the wall over the prospect of signing someone who is going to ride the bench is baffling. By the sounds of it you'd think we're signing him to be the center piece of our team.
Apparently Juventus are in for Cahill. Why do clubs think they can treat us so terribly then come inquiring after our players. We tend to deal favourbly when selling our players but are treated so poorly when buying or attempting to buy.
Not upset about signing Drinkwater as depth. It's the fact that we will end up spending almost all of the Matic money on him essentially trading Matic for Drinkwater
If you want to frame it that way, go for it lol. Clearly we traded Matic for Baka but then again, this thread is the epitome of misery so I don't know why I bother.
Drinkwater is depth and will play the cup games. Apart from his price, im ok with the purchase. If it happens
Depth sure. If the fee winds up being around 35m you have to think that's the English Fee. You can look around at other midfielders that have gone for that or less and are probably better/more upside.
My main concern is this. Kante/Baka/Fab will all be ahead of him and unless two are injured he will rarely see the pitch in big matches as you said. For that exact reason, why spend £30M+ for a player to do that? Surely a club like ours has youth players who wouldn't cost the club a penny on transfer fees, and who could also benefit from game time with the first team squad? Lastly, signing Drinkwater means he will be here more then likely for 3-4 seasons. I rather have youth players fill in the depth then him. The reason why we are even looking to sign him is because of the poor management by the club. We shouldn't have lost Chalobah, he should be that 4th CM this season.
