.... it's btw the first time Kosovo are participating in the Europa Cups,... so it's a first for Prishtina ... and for the Kosovo Champions Trepça'89 who lost their first CL away mach against Faroese Champions Víkingur, though only by 1-2 ... so they still got a good chance to progress

Loads of red cards and penalties awarded in the 1st leg of the 2nd Qualifying Round ...not only in the games involving Nordic teams but in general ... the Ferencvaros v FC Midtjylland game was a kind of déjà vu when comparing with the FCK match in Slovakia, with a poor start and a hat-trick and all, after a red card to the home team, though with the difference that FCM fell two goals behind and finished with a 4-2 away win ... still, Slovakia can't be happy about being drawn against Scandinavian opponents this season, losing at home to FCK, SK Brann and even a low budget newly promoted Danish "yo-yo" team like Lyngby that usually go up and down, suffering relegation straight away and never manage to qualify for Europe, except for this season .. just as the 2-0 home win by highly inexperienced Swedish Östersunds against Galatasaray is a huge positive surprise.

Very lucky draws for especially the Swedish teams ... Östersunds FK rely on Galatasaray being seeded, which helped them to an easy draw, if they manage to progress ...while the other possible opponents for Norrkoping were PSV Eindhoven, Fenerbahçe, Panathinaikos and Krasnodar from Russia, so they got by far the easiest draw of all ... Braga was not the easiest opponent for AIK Stockholm , but they could also have drawn Freiburg, Marseille and Zenit from Russia.

While Lyngby were in a terrible pot, Brøndby and Midtjylland can also be fairly happy, though FCM were seeded and not going to get one of the tougher opponents, then Brøndby could have faced either AC Milan or Bordeaux .. on the other hand they could also have drawn Östersunds or Haugesund .

... which leads me to Norway ... Haugesund escaped facing Brøndby and Craiova from Romania, but drawing Utrecht is obviously no better and SK Brann could hardly have been more unlucky by getting Everton ... 2nd worst option would have been Sparta Praha. ... Odd BK were in a terrible pot, so there were no easy opponents for them.

    2nd leg 3 August

Both Lyngby and FC Midtjylland lost their away games in the last minute ... Lyngby even in the last 15 seconds of 3 minutes injury time in a match they actually probably should have won by 3-2 when looking at the big opportunites .. both teams struck the post once, but otherwise Lyngby were actually the better playing team, wasting several big opportunities ... but again they are inexperienced in Europe ... though it was not experience that saved Krasnodar in the end, but a goal by the only 17-yo substitute Magomed Suleymanov who scored his first goal for his club due to a randomly deflected ball ... so quite unlucky for Lyngby... though by the look at the two teams performance in this first leg, it should still be 50-50 considering the Lyngby advantage of playing at home and the Russians being the more experienced team...

    FCM
also squandered their opportuinty to get a 2-2 away resuls in the very last minute, but should still be the favorites to progress, though they now need a home win ... the 0-0 result between Brøndby and Hajduk Split was on the other hand quite deserved in a match where the Croatians were defending well, while Brøndby on the other hand perhaps were playing it a bit to safe, not to risk an away goal to the visitors ... Looking at the Europa Cup ranking the two leagues are on pair, though the Superliga being slightly in the lead ... But Brøndby will be playing in an empty stadium in the away leg in Croatia, so Hajduk are not going to have much if any advantage of playing at home next week ... so this will also be a 50/50 toss, considering that the Croatians now need to be more attacking minded, which could lead to an away goal or two for Brøndby ...

Östersunds missed plenty of opportunities and are still the big favorites to progress, despite a narrow 1-0 home win against the minnows from Luxembourg, while it looks more bleak for AIK, considering the result and away goal to Braga.

Odd BK on the other hand made an important away goal in Croatia, though the tie should still be considered 50/50, considering that the Croatian league is better than the Norwegian.

FC Midtjylland and Östersunds FK were the only two Scandinavian teams to progress to the play-off round of the Europa League, though in the case of FCM they where saved by the newly signed Norwegian Alexander Sørloth in 3 minutes injury time ... on the other hand they also lost in Poland by a goal in the very last minute, but in all honesty, FCM were terrible, playing their absolutely worst game so far this season .. still, they are in luck with also Bordeaux, Freiburg, PSV Eindhoven, Gent and Sparta Praha being eliminated, so FCM are now going to be among the seeded teams in the Play-off's ...

Rosenborg and Hafnarfjordur from Iceland will also get a second chance in the EL play-off's after being eliminated from the Champions League qualifiers... but just like Östersunds FK, they are not going to be among the seeded teams.

FC Midtjylland will host the second leg against Apollon Limassol of Cyprus.
Hafnarfjordur will host the first leg against Braga of Portugal.
Rosenborg will host the second leg against Ajax of Netherlands.
Östersunds FK will host the second leg against PAOK of Greece.

Braga, Ajax, and PAOK are all in the top half of the seeded clubs in the club coefficients, and Apollon Limassol is ranked sixth out of the 22 unseeded clubs, so it was a hard draw.

Well, looking at the group of unseeded teams FC Midtjylland were able to get, only Hafnarfjordur would have been a much better option ... the other possible unseeded teams FCM could get were Panathinaikos, Hajduk Split and the Champions from Romania Viitorul... so they are fairly happy with getting Apollon Limassol that finished 3rd in the Cypriot league and had trouble getting past Aberdeen in the 3rd qualifying round. ... the last time FCM faced a team from Cyprus was back in 2015-16, were they clearly underestimated the Cypriot champions APOEL Nicosia in the first leg at home and lost by 1-2 ... but in the return leg on Cyprus they dominated and won by 1-0, but lost the tie on away goals ... they won't be underestimating Apollon Limassol, though they are not quite as good as APOEL.

FC Midtjylland (Den) v Apollon Limaasol (Cyp), 1-1 (Agg. 3-4)
    1-0 Rilwan Hassan (10)
    1-1 Andre Schembri (59)
Alex Da Silva, Apollon miss penalty (82)

Östersunds FK (Swe) v PAOK (Gre), 2-0 (Agg. 3-3, Östersunds progress on away goals)
    1-0 Ante Erceg (59)
    2-0 Ante Erceg (63)

Rosenborg (Nor) v Ajax Amsterdam (Ned), 3-2 (Agg. 4-2)
    1-0 Nicklas Bendtner (26)
    1-1 Amin Younes (60)
    1-2 Lasse Schøne (61)
    2-2 Samuel Adegbenro (80)
    3-2 Samuel Adegbenro (89)

Braga (Por) v Hafnarfjordur (Ice), 3-2 (Agg. 5-3)
    0–1 Bödvar Bödvarsson (16)
    1-1 Paulinho (39)
    1–2 Bödvar Bödvarsson (51)
    2-2 Paulinho (80)
    3-2 Paulinho (90)

Excellent job by Rosenborg beating Ajax at home in a highly entertaining match where the newly signed Nigerina winger and super sub Samuel Adegbenro saved the day for Rosenborg at the very end by scoring two excellent goals ... Östersunds also managed yet another big surprise through a 2-0 home win, which was just enough to progress to the EL Group Stage on away goals ... and also a very good and brave performance by Hafnarfjordur being 2-1 up in Portugal, though losing the game 2-3 in the very last minute.

FC Midtjylland on the other hand were the huge disappointment of the day, not least because they had looked like they were in total control and sure to get a an excellent 2-2 away result in the first leg, until Apollon managed to score in the very last seconds ... and that last minute goal to Apollon in Cyprus became the downfall of FCM, along with an absolutely horrible 2nd half in the home game, after an early lead and totally dominating most of the first half, producing good opportunities and also being cheated by the referee, not getting a penalty..

.. but as we have seen before this season, FCM can suddenly lose grip of a match where they have seemed in total control ... as they also did from the very start of the second half in this home game, where Apollon came out quick to produce som great opportunities and getting that one away goal they were in need of ... FCM on the other hand seemed like they were hardly able to string two good passess together in the second half, which made it easy for Apollon to defend their 1-1 result .. that is, until the last 13 minutes or so, where FCM finaly woke up and also came very close to taking the lead right after Appollon had missed a penalty ... but it was way too little too late due to a terrible second half ... not to forget that last minute Apollon goal in Cyprus that came back to haunt them.

But FC København, Rosenborg and Östersunds are in the Europa league group stage, FCK in pot 1 among the top seeded ... while Rosenborg will be in pot 3 and Östersunds in pot 4. ... so in principle they can all end up in the same group ...

Group F ....FCK got the easiest group they could hope for ... but also the most boring group you could possible think of ...

To start from the bottom, then FC Zlin finished 6th in the Czech Republic league last season and are in 7th place so far this season ...they have so far never played a single match in Europe, but still qualified directly for this EL Group stage as Czech Rep Cup winners, because CL title holder Real Madrid already qualified for the CL group stage, leaving a open spot for the EL title holder Manchester United in CL, which then leave an open free spot in the EL group stage for the Cup winner of the 13th country on the UEFA league ranking list, which happened to be the Czech Rep ... seem complicated,.. but obviously FC Zlin are very lucky to have been given this free spot in the EL Group stage that they did not actually need to qualify for ... and as written, they have no experience playing in Europe at all.

Sheriff Tiraspol from Moldova progressed to this Gruop stage by only managing 1 win out of 6 games in the qualifiers ... seems absurd ... but possible because they are Moldova league Champions and managed a 1-0 home win and then scoring an away goal in a 1-2 loss against the Albanian Champions ... in the 3rd round they lost 1-2 at home to Garabag Agdam that FCK just beat 2-1 at home in the CL qualifiers, but Sheriff got a losers second chance in the EL play-off's, where they managed a 1-1 away result in Poland against Legia Warsaw and 0-0 at home ... so no win, but again they managed to progress by scoring an away goal ... obviously this kind of away-goal luck won't help them in a group stage where you actually need to win some games to finish in top two...

Just as FC Zlin, Lokomotiv Moscow did not need to play EL qualifiers to qualify, but are in the group stage as Russian Cup winners, because Russia is among the top 12 leagues in the UEFA ranking... it has been a few years since the last time they qualified for Europe and they finished 8th in the Russian PL last season but right now they are in great shape and doing well in 2nd place this season .. in the EL group stage back in 2007-08 Lokomotiv lost 0-1 to FCK at home in Russa and back then they had also qualified for Europe as mid-table Russian cup winners.... but obviously FCK were not a shaky looking 7th placed mid-table Superliga team back then. as they are right now..

Group L .... Rosenborg did not have as much luck with their draw...

Zenit finished 3rd in the Russian league last season, but are undefeated at the top of the league so far this season ... They beat a team from Israel then narrowly (2-0 and 0-1) Dutch side Utrecht to get this far, but obviously they a one of the more expereinced Russian teams that also progressed from the EL group stage last season ... The last and only time time Rosenborg faced Zenit was in the EL round 3 back in 2005-06 where Zenit won both home (2-1) and the away leg (2-0).

Real Sociedad finished 6th in the Spanish La Liga last season and due to the complicated UEFA rules as mentioned earlier, did not need to play qualifiers to reach this EL group stage ... the last time they played in Europe was back in 2014-15 where they got eliminated (1-0 and 0-3) in the EL play-off's by Russian side Krasnodar ...

Vardar, the Champions from Macedonia we already know by now from their performance in the CL qualifiers this season against other Scandinavian teams ... ... they beat Malmö FF (3-1 and 1-1) , but then got bumped to EL play-off's by FC København when they lost 1-4 to a 10 men FCK in Copenhagen .. but then they much surprisingly managed to beat Fenerbache from Turkey both home (2-0) and away (2-1) in the play-off's to become the very first Macedonian club to qualify for a group stage... So they are writing EC history for Macedonia no matter how well they do in this group. ...

Group J ... Östersund have done much better than anyone could expect so far, but as the bottom seeded team in this group stage they were bound to get a difficult group ... though on paper this does not look worse than the group Rosenborg are in ...

Athletic Bilbao finished 7th in the Spanish La Liga last season and qualified for this group by beating Dinamo from Romania (3-0 and 1-1) and then Panathinaikos both home (1-0) and away (3-2) ...

Hertha Berlin may be a household name in Europe, but they have finished 7th and 6th in the Bundesliga the past two seasons, just managing to qualify for Europe, but they have not been in a group stage since 2009-10 and last season they were eliminated in the EL qualifiers (1-0 and 1-3) by Brøndby ... so they are probably not quite as strong and an impossible task for Östersund as some people may think ...

Zorya finished 3rd in the Ukranian league last season, while they are currently in 8th position at the bottom half of the table so far this year ... and like Hertha Berlin, they did not play EL qualifiers to reach this group stage, which btw is their 2nd EL group stage in a row ... last season they also qualified directly to the group stage where they finished last, losing home and away to Manchester United, but managed a 1-1 draw at home against both Feyenoord and Fenerbache ... in 2005-16 they lost both home and away in the EL play-off's to Legia Warsaw from Poland ... but as written, they are not doing all too well in the Ukranian league so far this season...

As I was joking doing the draw, the two toughest opponents for FCK is the long travels east and maybe Moscow given their form in the domestic

FCK are so highly experienced playing against all kinds of teams in Europe and very often in far-away Eastern Europe, that it does not really matter much where they have to go ... their main problem right now seem to be when they face highly defensive minded teams (like Garabag), because they then have trouble creating opportunities, while their silly defending leave them highly vulnerable for a few counter-attacks ... you could argue that they are not really defensively strong enough to be able to dictate and dominate games ...

In my opinion, it's not at all coincidental that it took a red card and playing 10 against 11 before they were able to look excellent at home against Vardar, because Vardar then became less defensive minded, which actually made it all much easier for FCK ...
