That goal is on Yamashita, she was celebrating her initial save or trying to make a point for the ref that she was fouled, either way she stayed on the ground for far too long and was then late for Camila shot
It's really a shame. I guess we should have won this one. Just replace Tanaka with a decent FW and we could have scored 3 goals. Anyway I guess we were more than OK tonight (although my opinion is that, apart from Marta, Brazil is a quite ordinary team, that we shouldn't have trouble beating). As a side-note: if the commentator was so unbearable today, I can only imagine what it can be in the other matches: one vs NWSL darling Sam Kerr and the other vs USWNT. I'll have to mute the audio or recur to a Japanese feed, if unepomme can provide one...
Great performance, unlucky and some poor finishing - in year or two Japan will win 8 out of 10 against Brazil. Nadeshiko youth has dominated experienced Brazil team, I'm impressed. Future looks bright!
I just read that Alex Morgan was allowed to leave her club in France (she still plays there?). Why wasn't Kumagai?
My best guess is she has a special clause in her contract allowing her to leave the club at any time. Usually reserved for national team duties, otherwise... I guess it's on a whim thing? Probably payback for Aulas' incessant stalking hahaha.
Alex Morgan stopped playing for OL after the Champions' League final and she's currently playing in NWSL for Orlando Pride (she even already scored, a PK). So, she's no more in France and no comparison with the Kumagai case makes sense. NWSL had a break for Tournament of Nations, no games will be played this week-end. All players are free to join respective NTs (and those who had their NT at Euro 2017, like Amandine Henry, skipped last round of the league, last week-end).
If we'll only have access to American channels for our streamings, we'll have to get used to get no respect from commentators: they have to promote NWSL. Admtting their league's stars can be beaten by "nobodys" (since only Utsugi plays in NWSL, that's how their average viewer perceive Japan, despite our past titles and the fact that Japan is 6th in the world) would by like publicly claiming "our league is shit". Half Brazil's team players have a prominent role in NWSL (Marta, Debinha, Andressinha, Camila, Bruna Benites...): the commentator knew that all of Orlando Pride's, Houston Dash's, North Carolina Courage's supporters would have rooted for them and only some lonely Seattle Reign's fan would have rooted for Japan, so he acted accordingly. That's why I said that calling Naho for this tournament would have been not only a sign of respect for her history in NT, but also a good marketing move. It wouldn't have changed Japan's supporters fan-base in USA (basically, no more that Seattle Reign's fans), but it would have unlocked at least a little name recognition for Japan, since Kawasumi is considered one of the stars of NWSL, while Utsugi is viewed as a good player at best.
Meanwhile, while I was finally deservingly sleeping, Australia has beaten USA by 1-0 with a goal by Tameka Butt (also known for having played in Japan, in Iga FC Kunoichi). Can I display some schadenfreude? That's maybe karma for that hateful ESPN commentator! It looks like the most dangerous opponents in the next games should be our Asian Cup rivals of Australia, and not USWNT.
We didn't see Madoka Haji on the pitch in this first game. I want to bet that she will play vs Australia, since she got to know so many Australian players in Iga, so she should know our next opponents better than other players. What does she say in this interview that was uploaded yesterday on Iga's website? I had seldom heard her speaking: it looks like she has a quite humble attitude and a sweet soft tone of voice. She uses to show personality on the pitch, though, where she always seems very determined from Iga's highlights we use to see.
Tomorrow's game: Nadeshiko League 2 Cup Group B Ehime vs Kibi 11:00 All Japan youth (U15) championship final: JFA vs Urawa on JFA TV at 11:00 http://www.jfa.jp/match/joshi_youth_u-15_2017/tv.html
"When I heard it from the coach, I repeated to ask her if it was true. Although I'm nervous, I'm rather looking forward to it. If I have a chance to play, I want to aggressively challenge it."
JFA's pre-game routine was very funny. Also, their PK with the player knelt down in front of the ball cracked me up! 15 year olds only can seriously try this kind of things! Nojima's GK #60 was very underwhelming: 3 goals out of 4 are on her.
Well, these highlights were way more balanced than US ones would have been. And at least we didn't hear their comment (although our commentator mistook Sakaguchi with Utsugi in the goal action). Watching these highlights makes me think that we should have really really won this game! Our converting ratio is too low!
See that is why Wiki is a bad source. She was still listed for Lyon when I checked last night before I posted the question.
...made more glaring by the presence of Mina Tanaka at the center of our attack line. I am persuaded that with Sugasawa as a starter (or maybe even with Tomari) we could have won by 2-1 or 3-1
Nadeshiko vs Brazil. It was such a frustrating game to watch. Both sides were so poor compared to the Women's Euro. I think all the Brazil's chances came from Nadeshiko's mistakes usually loosing the ball in the dangerous area. I know they can't finish the chances but they should be creating more chances against this opponent - this Brazil team was so poor. I can not find any Japanese players who did well actually. Tanaka - she does everything so well apart from scoring. She does look low in confidence. She never looked like scoring one on one with the keeper. In terms of other parts of her game, actually she does better than Nagasato. Really shame she can't finish... Hasegawa - So disappointing. No impact attacking wise, and loosing the ball in the bad area and causing Brazil's counter attacks. Yamashita - I don't know what other people think but to me Brazil's goal was her mistake even though it was a fierce shot. There was a replay from the other goal. She went with punching the ball instead of parrying it. She got some but not enough. She obviously thought it was in the rage of punching the ball but she got it wrong or swerved a bit. Not a blunder but still a mistake for me. Utsugi - One of the poorest in the team. I still think she should play in the central midfield but the number of missplaced passes under no pressure is just not good enough. The clearance that led to the goal wasn't clever either. Sakaguchi - nothing to talk about. Very quiet. She should command the ball more and try to create tempo. Nakajima - I'm not a big fun of her - she always looks labored, her fist touches are not great. But I have to say when she has time and space, her delivery is usually good. She has end products compared to other players who are more skillful but their final ball is poor and disappointing. She had to score with the chance though.
At least, Germany, Spain, France, England. Possibly Austria and the Netherlands as well even though we beat the Netherlands recently. I think, with the Nadeshiko's performance yesterday, they would struggle to beat other teams such as Italy and Switzerland. But when I say they were poor, I'm just talking about the performance of the both teams in yesterday's match. Who knows it could be to do with jet lag or whatever. After all I'm comparing to the teams that are peaked to the tournament. The most disappointing thing was they looked quite content after they were equalised. All the interviews I've seen and read, they were talking up about the importance of winning matches. But they looked quite happy with the draw yesterday...
I watched all the Euro matches but two so far and tell you this: the Nadeshiko I saw yesterday would give a decent match to Germany, quite likely win against Austria, Netherlands and France and demolish England, Spain and Italy. When I imagine exhausted Spanish or English ladies chasing Japanese crisp precise passes, I feel sorry for them.
