We're still head and shoulders above the second best team in Europe in terms of quality across the roster. I'm just hoping we add one more quality player (like Mbappe) to make it a non-contest.
Last season, we didn't have a backup LB (Coentrao's 297 minutes do not count). So - we exchanged Theo for Danilo. Depth is exactly the same at wingback, except I won't shit my pants when Theo comes on like I did with Danilo. So bodies wise, depth is the same - quality wise, 17/18 squad is deeper. Come on - you saw him play 302 minutes, you cannot judge "quality" based on that time. Unless you're counting the time he spent ripping up 3rd division teams as a 23 year old. Don't feed me the hattrick against Leonesa bullshit, he was surrounded with unreal service against again a 3rd division side. Is he more polished than Borja? Yeah, but neither were or ever will be a serious factor at Real Madrid. I'll agree with you on Morata, losing his contributions is a huge loss but Zidane seemed to acknowledge it and said we'll sort it out. James is a loss but not on the scale of Morata. He was more of a burden than a blessing, in that he has no natural position in our formation. His contributions can be picked up by Asensio/Kovacic/Ceballos. Also no mention from you of Llorente coming in to backup Casemiro this season, where last year we had no depth - care to comment?
I'll be honest, Nacho won me over big last season. But he still made mistakes I've disliked him for from previous years. I can see what Zidane is going through, he's trying to scour for more minutes to distribute with the players like Nacho, Vallejo and Varane and usually shifting around can achieve that. I just find myself worried that should Carvajal get an injury that's longer than a few games, we're going to miss having Danilo.
Then you're making my point for me. Nobody expects either to be a long term solution. But Mariano > Borja for me. Casemiro missing meant: Isco-Modric-Kroos, and we did fine with that. Kroos had to play deeper but I don't have a problem with Kovacic playing CM/DM either. So sorry if i'm not rubbing my hands because Llorente is backing up Casemiro. Can't tell until it matters. I suppose the same applies for Nacho.
How does that make your point? Neither player is actual depth. Is Yanez leaving a cause for concern because we're losing depth? 3rd string is irrelevant and always has been. Zidane is 100x as likely to shift a current first teamer out of position before starting Borja/Mariano.
It's obvious that the biggest reason Danilo was moved was because he p***ed his pants every time he was asked to step up. While he didn't cover himself in glory, he held it together. Nacho needs minutes. Obviously the LB and CB spots now have Theo and Vallejo respectively, so Zidane needed to free up a position where Nacho would be 2nd choice at the minimum.
You do realize as it stands Mayoral is our 2nd string right now right? Because that's how it might actually end up if we don't land Mbappe. Technically Cristiano is the 2nd in line to play CF/ST, but if both Benzema and Cristiano is playing and we lose Bale as we usually do and then one of the aforementioned players gets injured, you're playing Mayoral alongside Cristiano/Benzema. Yes...I actually don't think Bale will stay fit the entire season. I'd love to be proven wrong, but I think the dude has Coentrao syndrome at the point.
Judging from Zidane's recent comments, it won't stay that way for long. I'm not ready to sound the alarm bells just 3 days after Morata left. Panicking at this point is silly
Agreed, I find this hilarious. Danilo's positional awareness is awful. Sure he actually played decent at left back at times but he will be a joke in the midfield if Pep tries to play him there. Great deal for us to get our money back on him. I'm not really worried about fullback depth if rumors are true about Lucas filling in there if needed. Squad is pretty much complete minus a loan or two going out. Just missing a striker...
For all we know Pep is indirectly doing Barca a favor by freeing up a RB. Pep could sell him to Barca and probably even make a profit depending on how desperate Barca gets in a year. The biggest reason Florentino bought Danilo was because he wanted to give a big F U to Barca after losing out on Neymar and Dani Alves was considering leaving (like he did with De Gea-Morata for Man Utd). Depriving them of an RB really worked out well for us so far. Given how well we know Danilo and how much he has been exposed, it's unlikely Barca goes after him, but it certainly makes him an option for them now.
Yeah, because Cristiano is joining preseason. He didn't say we needed one after that. Besides that I agree with you. Finding minutes upfront if Mbappé comes is a bigger concern than whether Mariano or Mayoral should get scrap minutes.
Carvajal, Nacho and Varane got carved up by Marital and Lingard. If this game was serious I'd have a fit. But it's pre-season, so whatever.
Lol. Pep doesn't realize it's players talent that made his system work. Danilo is no Lahm to cover 3 positions. Dude can't even do one properly. And he tried converting Kolarov to CB just cos it worked with Yaya lol. Chanel vs Walmart meme applies well to his attempts at City.
It's early but we all know Theo's potential, it will interesting to see how Zidane manages the left side this season
I also prefer Nacho at RB, it's where he's at his best but he's grown on me as a CB as well. Either way, we'll have 8 players for the back 4 whether we buy someone or use Lucas or Hakimi there. I don't see Nacho being first choice cover for two positions, especially when we don't know what we have in Vallejo yet.
I like nacho everywhere as he is so intelligent and willing to use his weaker foot even if it means failing to make the right play but it is the way forward and his pace is incredible.
Mendy officialy to City. what Mbappe thinking..? pretty much all key players left, he has offer from Real. He better not reject us
