I saw a video that looks like he actually tucked his arm in and his elbow catches Adi with a glancing blow. Looks to me like he was just preparing to "rub" Adi as he went by to slow him down, but he extended a bit. Toledo said he raised it in a violent manner. So we will see, but my money is that they don't overturn it.

This is what I think too. Adi saw the elbow extended, which is why he flipped out. Intent counts on these calls, and even though he didn't make contact, I think Beckerman gets dinged here.

Twellman shared a video on twitter that shows Beckerman spitting on or at Toledo after the red card, I'm expecting a denial of the red card appeal and a multi-game suspension from the Disco

    1. if that's an "extension of the elbow" then so is every professional foul ever. I call bullshit
    2. The spitting is away from toledo. There are other angles of that picture showing it very much towards the ground away from toledo. If that's "spitting at an opponent or referee" then any time a player spits it is.

Spitting at him or on him would have been bad. I'm okay with showing how you feel by spitting on the ground. It's better than punching him in the face. It was disgraceful that Toledo made that call. Spit-worthy in my opinion. I don't think anything will happen as a result of that--the rescind will stand.

If Kyle and that flopping douche Adi get the same punishment that will definitely piss me off.

Toledo saw the "elbow" or whatever it was and called a run-of-the-mill foul. He made no indication that he was going to to caution Beckerman at all. Then Adi flips out and it's almost like Toledo didn't want more wrath from the fans/Porter by sending off two Timbers within minutes so he softened the blow. Easy appeal, and should be rescinded if there's any justice (not getting my hopes up).

Yep. It would have been a foul and possible yellow until Adi goes completely bonkers. Then in order to regain whatever modicum of control of the game he could, he has to similiary punish RSL so KB5 is shown red as well.

I could see them rescinding the red on Beckerman, only to have him suspended for 1 game for spitting.

Adi should be shown a multiple game suspension. Possibly two additional games.

@KendaReal and @SpiffCoug have the right of it. That red was given because Toledo (and in fairness, many referees do this) had just red carded a home player and was looking for an opportunity to do the same to the visitors.

I think you're right about not placing much on the prospect of making the playoffs. Even though the Western Conference has depressed ppg relative to years prior, we'd have to have a great run of form over the last 13 games.

Right now, WC teams hovering about the cutoff have a ppg of ~1.3. Multiply that by 34 games, and you get 44.2 points to get spot #6. Let's just make that 45pts to be safe. Right now we have 23pts and 13 games left, leaving (45-23 to get...) 22pts/13games = 1.69ppg just to squeeze into 6th place.

RSL has never achieved better than 1.75ppg over the course of a season (a solid ppg for SS winner historically), even with our very talented teams 5years ago. Only Chicago, TFC, NYCFC and Dallas are at or above 1.7ppg right now. We'd have to play as well and consistently as they do in order to get there. With how shaky our defense and GK situation has been, I just don't see us being able to scrap through enough games when the offense isn't clicking to bag a point or steal 3.

However, we do have the easiest Strength of Schedule ranking. We have more home games than away games (although the last two wins were on the road, albeit against teams dealing with lots of injuries). Portland is tanking. Both Seattle and San Jose haven't looked that great and could easily slump to the finish. We really do look like we are one of the better teams at the moment, aside from the wacky-sax defensive errors we consistently make.

Currently, 538 gives us a 1 in 3 chance of making it, close to the same for Montreal and LA. But they also give Portland a 55% chance, which I really don't see happening unless a miracle happens for them. San Jose seems like the most likely 6th seed, although they just fired their coach and are undergoing a bit of a transition as well. I just don't see them getting any worse.

I will be quite pleased to finish #7 this season and get a little extra YOU SUCK! cash for next year with a whole offseason under Petke to see if this thing can really take off.

Oddly, if we had just one more win instead of a tie or loss, the chances of us making the playoffs would be pretty good.

Its really funny how much this happens when you come to the end of a season. Teams are sitting there just one win away from completely changing the scope of the playoff picture. Which then makes you wonder, in the early season when the talk is all "it's a marathon, we can have some early bumps"... should that be challenged?

The difference between having a bye or not is 3 points or fewer more often than not. So is the difference between hosting a first round game or being the visitors. Or making the playoffs versus going on vacation early. Unless a team distances itself from the pack, winning a game that should be a loss, say while undermanned and on the road against a good team, makes a huge difference in the end results for an average or near-average team. As does losing an easy game.

Right now, for teams near the cutoff line, winning or losing a single game can typically change their chances of making the playoffs by 20-25%. It's even more if the game is against a conference foe in the same situation.

The reality of the MLS season is that not every player is available for every game, due to injury, national team, card accumulation, or just fatigue. Coaches have to set rosters to maximize chances in the current game without hurting their chances in the next ones.

Didn't they go 15-11-7 in 2010? That's 1.87, no? And looking at just 13-game stretches, there are a several in the team's history where they've met or bettered 1.69 PPG. I found one in 2014 (from 7/4 to 9/19) where they earned 24 points in 13 games for a 1.8 ppg.

I don't think this RSL team is up to it, but getting to 45 points from this point wouldn't exactly be unprecedented.

Oh shoot! I didn't go back to 2010! Thanks for pointing out the error.

That was a ridiculous season. They went WDWDWDWDWDWDWDWDWDWDWDWDWD or something to close out the season. 14 games unbeaten.

Yeah, there have been several times that RSL has hit that ppg over 13g, but that was when the team was a well-oiled machine. That is the main point of the post, is that RSL would have to perform at a rate that was difficult for even the best teams of RSL past to achieve.

I guess we'll see over the next few games, starting tonight. If this CB winds up being a clear upgrade, it's possible that we're finally stop leaking so many goals. On top with our recent scoring form, it's possible we're at the turning point. I won't fully buy into it unless we go the next few games with positive results, but our current form has been promising to say the least.
