Carleton and Goslin are on the plane to Miami for the open cup game tomorrow night. It also looked like Asad, Villalba, Martinez and Almiron are not making the trip.

I think there are tons of things that could be done to get more young Americans minutes.

The international spot would help, as you say the rules are being circumvented big time with players getting green cards so easily. You could also institute a rule that "Americans under the age of 23 need "X" amount of minutes and Americans under the age of 20 need "X" amount of minutes per season. Would it be perfect? No, but I don't think it would dilute the product, unless that number was very big, and even if it wouldn't directly make an improvement in the quality of young Americans and teams wanting to give Americans a chance, I think it might help a few who deserve a chance but aren't getting a chance and it would force the lower level academies (Colorado, Houston, New England, etc) to improve.

To me though, I'm not concerned with MLS's level. I don't particularly care if MLS is the 18th best league in the world compared to the 22nd league in the world, and I don't think people here should care either. Its one thing if we were talking about 22nd as opposed to 5th, but if we are still talking about a relatively poor level, I'd rather MLS be a feeder league, and put an emphasis on developing young Americans.

Probably this front 4, and then he uses no attacking subs or gives Carleton 5 minutes.

    Martinez
    Gressel-Kratz-Vazquez

Still injured, but your point stands.

Do you even need quotas? This is a purely closed system. There's no concern about relegation so MLS needs to push from the top down, play your kids. That doesn't mean they should play 3+ every game whether they're good enough or not but finding minutes for kids shouldn't be that hard with as many playoff spots as there are. Of course results matter but losing or tying 5 more games over the course of a season where you get 500 minutes or so for your best youngsters shouldn't be a deterrent. That's especially true if the goal is to groom a Matt Miazga, part time player, full time player, sold for 5m. That's a win for everyone.

This probably wouldn't ever be implemented but a rule similar to what Venezuelas domestic league has had where there must be a youth player in the starting XI and can only be subbed out for another Venezuelan youth would be a big deal for the NT and MLS both (WC years coincide with a spike in interest in MLS etc). Id imagine the leagues quality would only really suffer for the first handful of seasons and even then I think it'd be a negligible difference for what would be a sizable gain, but honestly our best prospects should be going to Europe as soon as possible anyways (generally speaking, at least until MLS improves), and so for me the rule would be more about forcing head coaches to truly care about the quality of coaching and development in their academies rather than it necessarily being about developing the next big time MNT player. It's pretty lame how many coaches insist on using their precious salary cap on mediocre journeyman rather than give their youth meaningful minutes , I mean does anyone really think the watchability of MLS would decrease too much if it was a Jackson Yuell level youth player getting mins every night instead of some so-so 29 yr old brought over from the Hungarian league. There's no rhyme or reason in MLS right now as to which youth players get minutes vs those that don't, Brooks Lennon, a solid and respectable if a bit limited player is starting every night but a player as talented and with as much upside as EPB cant even get a late game substition lol

    Ruben Luna is a 92 ;)

But I agree with Reynolds being the 18th.

Also, here's the full quote from Dan Hunt from the other day in his interview where he elaborates on why he thinks USL is critical.

    upload_2017-6-27_18-2-6.png

Notice he saids that he thinks they'll have 8-10 pros per team. That's 4-5 per year, which is pretty much a player factory. If USL is still streaming on Youtube for every game next year, I think FCDII is going to be my new favorite team.

Also, does anybody know if Dallas can still sign Devin Vega to a homegrown deal?

That makes sense. I had forgotten this winter's timeline.

Anyway, FCD's 18th Homegrown is starting in the USOC tonight along with FCD's 15th (Pomykal).

Pomykol, Cannon start for Dallas in Open Cup. Calvert starts for Colorado. No sign of Ferreira.

Well look at that, we completely agree on something. I give no shits how good of a league MLS actually becomes, top 15, top 20, whatever. All I care about is maximizing the development of the American player and putting them into the best career paths possible to maximize their potential. I wouldn't mind MLS becoming top 5 in the Americas and proving it in Copa Libertadores which would be a great experience for our players but that's years away, if ever.

Some want MLS to be a top 5-8 league some day. I'd be far happier if it became a North American version of the Brasil/Arg leagues, produce talent, play talent, ship talent to better leagues when the timing is right.

Thing is, MLS will become a feeder league whether it wants to or not. It's a simple step in progression and the global market dictates it will become exactly that.....as soon as there's legit young talent here worth some good money. Once teams here have 18-21 yr olds garnering 5-15M transfer fees, they'll be on the first flight out and we'll start to see real participation in the global market.

That will never happen. Never. We might win a couple WCs and that doesn't happen. MLS becomes #1 league in the world and that still doesn't happen.

Reggie Cannon looks pretty stinking good.

Assist on the go ahead goal, and some tricky footwork soon after to get off a shot that needed a diving save.

I didn't see the first half, so can't comment much on Pomykol's performance. He came out around the 52nd minute for Barrios. It says something BTW that Pomykol started over Craft on that right wing.

Cannon was just fantastic defensively and offensively. Really nice assist as he received a sweet pass from Diaz as he was streaming towards the endline. Played in across the face of the goal for an easy Hollingshead putaway.

Even more importantly for him is that he shut down attackers on the his side in the part of the game I watched. Nothing got thru.

And the guy just has one hell of a motor. Bombing up and down the wing. Loved it.

FCD has games on July 1st and July 4th. So we'll see some more rotation thru that period. Cannon has earned a start in one of those games.

Nothing really to say about Colorado. Blech....................

    Its almost random.

And I think this season most of the most talented players have not been playing, so its very frustrating.

Every U20 cycle there are a couple of decisions that a coach makes that 5 years later look really poor. Its inevitable. Overlooking Reggie Cannon for the 2017 cycle will be one of those for Ramos. It was particularly egregious when Fossey went down with an injury.

Not exactly a surprise. We knew he was ready for minutes, showed it at UCLA. Wouldn't have signed, otherwise, IMO.

Ok so can someone explain this to me?

The Charleston Battery report that they sign Lagos Kunga to a full-time deal and then loan him to AUFC for the Open Cup.
    http://www.charlestonbattery.com/news_article/show/808486?referrer_id=2605045

But this article states that he is a AUFC HG?
    https://www.atlutd.com/post/2017/06/28/lagos-kunga-signs-short-term-agreement-atlanta-united

So correct me if I'm wrong, but since his AUFC full-time contract starts on 1/1/2018, Charleston signed him to a full-time deal probably until then. Then Charleston loans Kunga back to AUFC for this open cup game on a short term loan?

    Damn that's confusing.

Cannon was a beast last night. Agree with others that wonder how he wasn't with U20's. he ran stride for stride with Gatt at one point and stood him up. For those of you who missed Pomykol because of stream trouble he was very good and it looked like he and Diaz are starting to get a partnership going. I was surprised he was taken off early but then remembered he is coming back from injury. I also am guessing that Ferreira must be injured since he hasn't played for U18's or full team this week.
