At 77:45 game time, Edvin Jurisevic initiates the first instance of video replay in a USL game. Nothing comes of it, and not really easy to tell what he wants to check, but it had to start somewhere.

There were at least a half dozen last year.

EDIT: also, it has to be the tackle that resulted in the foul. For the review to be initiated, the VAR must have suggested there was a possibility it was SFP. If I'm right,, and Jurisevic determined it wasn't SFP, then he followed the protocols correctly as I understand them. But this does show a weakness of the system... he can review that tackle if it's a red card, but he can't review it and give a yellow since no red card decision was made initially. So, even though I think you have at least a yellow upon review, you can't give it. The challenge is red or nothing. That's potentially a big problem if the player in question is already on a yellow.

Moved the two above posts to the VAR thread at the request of @Lucky Wilbury . Let's try to keep the discussion in there, at least until after the All-Start break and VAR is used in MLS.

Highlight isn't on the league's site yet but Orlando-Colorado, 36' minute, card to Perez Garcia of Orlando for a tackle on Saeid of Colorado. What color do you think the card should have been?

RSL at Kansas City, the Center (Rivero) was going to talk to the AR about a call, and he pulled out the spray foam and made a line past which he indicated no players could go, giving him time and space to talk with no one there.

I've never seen that before. It makes some sense, though, and I wonder if it is a new thing?

Speaking of SKC/RSL, am I the only one thinking Chris Schuler might draw the attention of the DisCo even though he went unpunished by the referee for sliding through Gerso.

According to my personal stats, at the conclusion of week 9, there have been 90 MLS matches, 321 cautions (3.57/g), and 17 red cards (0.19/g).

Based on the order of matches listed on the schedule on the MLS website, we have gone 24 straight matches without a red card. Last send off: Jared Watts by Ismail Elfath for DGH on April 15.

The TV analysis on this play is another example why players and coaches each week yell out "But Ref, I got the ball!!!":

    1. "Gerso eased up a bit". So, that's an excuse for a two-footed slide tackle at full speed that should have broken this guy's leg???

    2. "...Invited that challenge". Yep, he should have run away when the ball was coming to him...makes sense to me.

    3. "I don't think he ran at full speed". Huh?

    4. "He knew that the challenge was coming". Do I need to say anything else?

And that's the broadcasters for Gerso's team.

I'm with you. He saw and called the foul. I would love to know what he could have been thinking to keep his plastic in his pockets.

Here is Borg's weekly Instant Replay segment. Some really interesting plays and I'm quite stunned that not one red card was shown the entire weekend.

He always thinks there should be 20 red cards every week....

What's interesting is looking at these plays from a VAR perspective. All the clips I believe would be reviewable by a VAR.

My question is how many of these would be looked at?

I'd love to see PRO use the clips from this to discuss when a tackle from behind should be a straight send off.

Steven Lenhart, the bane of MLS refs everywhere, has retired from soccer due to concussion symptoms. He last played in Japan.
