There all kinds of running and dribbling in our game. Dribbling with the ball close is dribbling. Then you have when the player passes the ball to himself and catches the ball before an opponent can get to it. That is called running with the ball. Then you have players who don't have the ball either moving or running without the ball.

When to run and how far when you don't have the ball. You don't run until you see the dribbler get his head up. He can not pass to anyone with his down. Plus you should not run when your a head of the dribbler 50'40'30 even 20 yards. If the ball is lost you are to far a head to fall back behind the ball to stop a counter. A good distance is about 7 yards in front of the ball. So we have smart and not smart runs.

What you never do is leave a big hole of space on Ball side. That an opponent can use for an immediate counter against your team. If they do counter the only open space should be on the other side of the field. So they have to switch the field before they can counter. Then you should have someone who will direct your team to overshift to the far side to stop the counter on that side of the field. Nothing to it if you put the time in on the practice field.
